Reply 1988 (2015)

Follows a tight knit group of friends through the trials and tribulations of adolescence. There are no typical drama tropes with intense love triangles or revenge plots. There’s a sense of nostalgia and the realism of each and every character makes them that much more relatable and endearing.

in both drama one of ML is introvert, kind of awkward but nice guy.
in both drama family, friendship relationships are shown very beautifully (of course one is long and other short drama but both do great job in the time they have).
in both there are smiles and tiers too.
even some scenes reminded me Reply 88

P.S. it's hard to say about any drama that it is similar and equally good as Reply 1988 but this short drama was really very close

reply 1988 might be more centered on friendship while Memory of Encaustic Tile is more of a romance drama

Both dramas focus on each character's individual lives, portraying their struggles and emotions beautifully. In the way in which the characters of Reply 1988 live together, rely on each other and cry together; the characters of our blues reside on Jeju island and their various occupations are intertwined. I'll go as far as to say the occupations depend on each other.

Both dramas are set in 1980's and revolve around high school students and how are their lives affected by political situation of the country. Both main female characters are very similar to each other and overall both dramas have similar feeling.

I highly recommend both!

Both dramas:
- tell stories of neighbours, in reply they know each other since kids and in the other are couples who live in the same building
- are hilarious
- have cute romance
- have the same vibe
- that dialogs owo
- every character is important and have its own story

It's korean drama but has similar light and funny family members with lots of heart warming friendship and family connections

I know one is a drama and the other is a reality dating show, but I'm mainly recommending because they both give that warm feeling of familial love.

Reply 1988 is a story of 4 families and their struggles/joys, with romance weaving in between. My Sibling's Romance is a dating show where 4 sets of siblings live together and go on dates with others without revealing who their sibling is.

Reply 1988 gave me a feeling of warmth that I have rarely felt while watching something. But My Sibling's Romance made me feel that same way, through the bond each sibling duo has. The dynamics differ but they are all equally precious. It's nice seeing the siblings root for each other and look out for each other in a setting where they don't know anyone else but each other. The backstories of each family will either leave you sobbing or with a massive grin.

Truly the best way I can describe it is that both are about family and love, and give you this big warm hug as you watch.

You could compare this show to any of the reply series but r1988 is my favorite :) r1988 doesn't have a time travel plot but its set in the past, revolves around a friend group/community, and they're both lovely and heartwarming.

Decreed by fate also has the who's the husband mystery like in the Reply series. Both the ML and SML are compatible with the FL.

Both of them are set in the 80’s with themes about youth and friendship. They’re also very nostalgic and hilarious.

Okay, this might seem like the weirdest and inept recommendation you have ever seen. But let me explain:

While I was watching Reply 1988, I would be repeatedly reminded of Nirvana in Fire. At first glance, these two dramas have nothing in common. One is a Korean drama set in 1988 about family and friendship in a tiny social universe. The other is a historical, highly strategic drama set in China at the emperor's court.

However, they are similar in more subtle matters:
Both plots work only because of the tight networks they are set in, in one it is a neighbourhood street, in the other the aristocratic court. What in Reply 1988 is build on social ties, is build upon a political net in NiF.
Then there is the universal and well-rounded plot that involves most humane emotions and ambitions on which the story is build on. This is what makes them similar: There are no big "events" or accidents or villains out-of-the-blue that lead the story, but the people's emotions, ambitions and motifs ARE the story.

Both do not emphasize on the romance, although it is there. And both are written, shot and acted superbly.

You know, it is kind of comparing an absolutely fantastic cheese to an absolutely fantastic cheese-cake. They seem nothing alike, but when you look closer, or taste deliberately, you will "feel" that both were made from the same kind of milk. :)
