Enjoyable if you have the right attitude
It's a mistake to take a supernatural saeguk too seriously. Parts of this were so hyper that it was quite funny. I kept wondering what the Ha Ram script looked like as he turned into various manifestations of the demon - what are the stage directions like? The changes certainly kept the makeup people busy. And how many times did Painter Hong say abeoji in this drama? Good grief. I'm very fussy about CG, and all the CG effects were well done.This is possibly the most over the top historical I've ever seen, to the point that it became absurd. But it still provided pretty good entertainment. The cast did a great job, the writing wasn't annoying, it was a little over-long but not horribly, and even the music did not offend. It was fun to watch, and you could spend your time in a worse way - like watching Squid Game.

so much potential
Great cinematography, great actors, really handsome ML, powerful beginning. After the first two episodes I was totally in love with this drama. I love fantasy and I love romance, it was perfect for me. But man they throw it away... Half of the show is good but the other half is so bad that in the end i don't recommend anyone to lose time with this. The problem is that each episode is half good and half bad: after each major scene there is endless time where the characters involved in that scene explain to all the other characters what just happened, what does it means, what they have to do next. Then they do that and the routine begin again.Half of each episodes is dragged from the beginning to the end of the show.
Another big problem is that the rules of magic in this world are a bit confused. It is not really clear when Ma Wang manifest, how strong are his power compared to the others and how powerful are the magical items. The magical spirits are cool but in some ways not so convincing, in particular the white guy and the green guy.
Last but not least the plot in the end is a bit weak and you can really feel it because of all the useless scenes.
I'm so disappointed, the premises were really cool.

Compelling story with a good heart, great acting, and magnificent effects
I just finished Lovers of the Red Sky and cannot understand the number of very negative reviews generated by this enjoyable and beautiful drama. Perhaps I am more easily pleased than most but I found the story to be compelling and fascinatingly multi-faceted with a good heart beating under its skin. I enjoyed the complete acceptance of interaction between humans and immortals without a trace of skepticism to be refreshing. And art at its very center - the power of art, the divine gift of a great artist to be a beautiful unifying thread. The power of art to overcome evil, to bring joy, beauty, harmony to life is a powerful undercurrent to this well told story.The acting was good across the board though I've never been a fan of the twitching lips and nostrils that seem to be cliche motions for the bad guy! More importantly, the chemistry between the artist and the astronomer was powerful, poetic, and palpable. It was wonderful to see their love blossom and them living happily ever after.
The ambiguous ending with the forces of the good prince and his evil brother attacking each other reminds us that the battle between good and evil does not end and even as our hero and heroine live happily and happily far away from the strife in the capitol, that battle still rages and at some point may even touch them again.
It's a beautiful story, worth telling, worth experiencing.

It was a painting show disguised as a supernatural drama.
It was a good drama, just not that great. The first 3 episodes suck you in because you're like "Hey, this is a cool supernatural drama." Then from episode 4 to 11 it lost all its steam, became draggy, kept repeating lots of plot that we've already been told about in the first few episodes and becomes a painting show. They seemed to forget that they were battling an evil spirit and when they DO remember, it's sprinkled in randomly in some scenes.It picks up after episode 11 and finally gets back to being a supernatural show, but then everything is rushed and they just start throwing so much random stories at you. It had the LONGEST revenge plot, which makes sense why it took so long because of the plot twist they throw at you in the end. It had the dumbest "overthrowing the king" plot line that all came to an abrupt, end when the king decided to put his son in time out. There were two random characters that had NO sort of explanation as to why they were in the series and involved in the revenge story (I'm talking about Ha Ram's right hand man and the Courtesan Lady) but we do get a little bit about the right hand guy for about 5 mins.
Then there was Ha Ram who you weren't quite sure if he was blind or not. The dude kept following people with his eyes and ANSWERING TO SILENT NODS, which made me think he was faking (he wasn't) and was pretty much the Korean Daredevil.
In terms of romance, you get one kiss in episode 6 or 7 and two in the last episode. It was pretty minimal because whenever these two were together Ha Ram was trying to kill her soooo.....there's that. You have a Second Lead (The Prince) who stood NO chance what so ever, so there were no love triangles, just the one that was in his imagination.
Finally the last episode came and everything was rushed, but you get the HAPPIEST of endings. (time skip) It's set up for a season two between the brothers, (with one of them coming again with another long ass revenge plot) but I do not care because the leads got their end and that's all that matters. I will not be watching it if they decide to do one. Does this warrant a re-watch? Yes, if you're into just staring at Paul Ahn in all his tall, red eyes, handsome glory. If not, nah, but it's good for a first watch.

1. I didnt realize when I started watching that this is a fantasy drama but episodes 1 and 2 were interesting and I loved the actors who played the younger versions of Haram and Cheon Gi, the background story was enough to get invested in the couple.
2. I loved the paintings, it was so amazing that simple brushes can make these fantastic masterpieces. The best episodes were the painting competition, although it was still unbelievable that a young inexperienced painter can win against everyone else. And her butterfly painting was not that great tbh.
3. I loved the Baekyu Painters Society and how they always had Cheongi's back, esp her two painter friends. And the friendship between Haram, Prince Yang Myeong and Cheon Gi.
4. The ending kind of redeemed the entire story since they get their happy ever after, but still dont understand why they decided to live in an area so faraway from the city. The last scene between the two princes, at first I though the story is incomplete, now thinking back i guess just shows life goes on.
Dislikes
1. The story got messy and a lot of things were unexplained. More than halfway and I still didn't get the reason for the ring, or why they need to seal the devil inside the painting (because the drama said so), how Cheon Gi is the divine painter (when it turns out without Hwacha's power her painting was useless so what was the point?), why Joohyang was still alive when his body is supposedly rotting away, the king knew all about Haram's plan and never told him the truth (rendering his whole life's revenge plot unnecessary). And the whole nonsense about Haram's grandfather. And what about Maehyang?
2. Haram was blind for 20 years but he is extraordinarily aware of his surroundings that he doesnt look blind at all! He looks straight at the person he is talking to, he fights against the soldiers when blind, he can interpret the stars without seeing them.
Rating: 7/10 (i should give a lower rating but the four leads were so pretty)

It was a good start
Until episode 10, everything started going down - where Yul started trying to seperate the two leads. I cannot stand the jealousy and his way of splitting up the couple. I feel so sad for Yul and it was so obvious that Cheon Gi has no space for the prince since the start. The fight was meaningless and it brought no value to the show in my opinion, and the writer can have more stories and explanation of the history of Mawang or how did all happen.And I had to forced myself to continue for the ending, while skipping the filler parts. What really irks now is the ending! There's a lot of plot holes. Little did I expect an open ending...
What happened to the characters' story, especially the gisaeng when she wanted revenge?? lol. It just ended with her cutting her wrist to prove her loyalty?? What is her story? And epiloge... It was so tiring to watch the dual between the prince especially I have no idea about Korea's history.
I just want to know who died in the end lol.

entertaining story, appreciate the art
Ma Wang, a god of death, trades his murderous power to would be kings who end up in bloodthirsty reigns, until one dying king decides to seal Ma Wang forever into his official portrait to end the blood shed. However, a shaman's errant rain ritual ends up releasing Ma Wang, only to have him sealed up once more in the body of the gifted rain diviner & astronomy advisor to the subsequent king, Ha Ran (Ahn Hyo Seop). Who then can save Ha Ran but Hong Cheong Ki, a divine painter who holds the key to containing the evil threatening his life.In spite of it's simple premise, so complicated is the story that this drama starts with a preview filled 1st episode, solely dedicated to explaning all the characters & their relationships in this show. And even then it was dizzying, especially when you have to read subtitles & can't keep an eye on every face flashing on the screen.
I was impressed by Kim You Jung's no-nonsense portrayal of her character in My Demon & I can see the same spunk in her personality here in Red Sky. That energy is good in playing forward thinking characters. I also previously saw AHS in A Business Proposal, & here he delivers much the same muted performance. While the acting overall isn't stellar, at least it doesn't detract from the story which is imaginative & actually sparked my interest in Han Dynasty painting & portraiture. The show delves into the art of painting to the point of exploring the concepts of line & form, & the inference of a subject without actually showing it. Surprisingly, this held my attention as much as waiting to see how the lead characters will achieve their ends. Oddly though, the drama purports to tie up "loose ends" & yet it leaves the arc of the royal princes battling each other hanging, with a 3rd prince frequently mentioned but never shown.
As a fan of the gods & demons genre, however, I found this drama overall very entertaining.

Mối tình nảy nở khi chàng dắt ta đi hái đào, qua năm tháng vẹn nguyên như thưở nào...Đây là lần đầu tiên mình xem hết một bộ phim cổ trang Hàn. Những lần trước đều bỏ dở ngang vì chút tranh đấu vương vị trong những bộ phim đó. Phim này có chút yếu tố huyền ảo nên tranh đoạt vương vị gì đó chỉ để làm nền.
Lớn lên với những bộ phim cổ trang Trung nên mình đã xem rất nhiều thể loại của Trung nhưng sang phim Hàn có chút gì đó mới mẻ và một thời gian dài mình mới chấp nhận và xem hết được. Một đặc điểm to lớn đó là mình cảm giác lời thoại Trung có gì đó sâu sắc, đem tới cho mình bao suy tư nhiều hơn phim Hàn. Câu từ phim Hàn dù có dịch ra bóng bẩy đến đâu đi nữa nhưng vì văn hoá vốn khác biệt nên nó không thể đem lại cái chất thường thấy trong phim Trung. Bỏ qua phần so sánh, cùng bàn vào phim.
Bộ phim mãn nhãn mình ở sắc đẹp của diễn viên. Nhìn những con người xinh đẹp hôn nhau, yêu nhau làm mình mãn nguyện biết mấy. Vốn yêu thích sắc đẹp dễ thương, ngọt ngào của Kim Yoo Jung nên phim này chị cũng vô cùng xuất sắc. Có thể nói về nhân sắc, diễn xuất của cả hai diễn viên chính, dàn nhân vật phụ mình đều không có gì chê cả, mọi thứ đều vừa và đủ.
Nhược điểm lớn nhất ở đây là kịch bản, thật sự còn quá nhiều lỗ hổng.
Cast nam nữ chính không phù hợp với độ tuổi chớm 30 nên mình hơi cấn vụ tuổi tác nếu tính ra. Mình cảm giác tình yêu của Ha Ram và Hong Cheong Gì chưa đủ sâu sắc và thuyết phục mình đến vậy. Đúng là họ gặp nhau sau 19 năm xa cách nhưng có lẽ kịch bản chưa có nhiều nút thắt thể hiện trong tâm lý hơn cũng như phát triển chuyện tình của họ trong thời điểm hiện tại chứ không hẳn vì gặp lại một người bạn thưở ấu thơ.
Khúc cuối phim là hạnh phúc mãn nguyện cuộc sống hai người sau hành trình vất vả. Chỗ này là họ khoảng 35 tuổi nhưng thực sự vãn chưa toát lại được một cặp vợ chồng trưởng thành, vượt qua bao sóng gió và cuộc sống hạnh phúc của họ xa rời chốn cung đình tranh đấu nghiệt ngã...
Bộ phim còn đề lại nhiều câu hỏi ngỏ nhưng mình không quan tâm lắm đến những vấn đề đó. Mình thích cuộc sống xa rời chốn "drama" đó của họ, một cuộc sống bình yên và hạnh phúc bên bến bờ yêu thương.
Phim có ưu điểm siêu lớn là anh nam phụ không phiền phức. Anh yêu nữ chính nhưng cũng hạnh phúc nhìn người mình yêu cạnh người khác :)))
Kết thúc lại thì phim có hay cũng có nhiều khuyết điểm nhưng có thể thấy rằng đây thật sự là bộ phim đáng xem ?

This drama makes me wanting more and more
I honestly didn't expect that this drama could be this good! Im a fan of the original novel, the author also the same with the moon that embraces the sun and Sungkyunkwan scandal.. so I was looking forward to this, but then everything went wild when i watched the first two episodes, it wasn't exactly the same from the novel but it was really good with their own ways! I love the fast-paced plot, i love the acting, i love the editing.. and more importantly i really love the music director of this drama! I felt like i was watching a movie because every scene was so intense ! The background music in every scene was so amazing! If you are a fan of fantasy drama (not only sageuk but also modern drama) you will love this one too! How can the drama so good, I'm crying. It's have been long I left historical kdrama. I like the plot, not boring, the acting, the chemistry. I'm dying to wait all the rest of the drama. I like the costume. Of course the behind the scene also cute. I like how all the cast and staff enjoy the filming. Well I never watch ahn hyo seop drama before. And I saw some comments that he can't act before . But He is good in this drama. For yoo jung, I'm speechless of her beauty and acting. No need to comment more because she's good in saeguk drama. Disappointed.
When i first saw this show was going to be airing, i was so excited because i enjoy the 2 main leads. I was rather disappointed with how the show turned out. I got hooked at some points, but then got bored at other parts. I enjoyed the story line but could have been done better in my opinion. i still enjoyed it for the most part, does not have any rewatch value in my eyes. Also the part the "gods" took in this show very much confused me, like i understood their purpose at some moments and then other moments it was just very random, again i was overall disappointed in this series.Vond je deze recentie nuttig?
