Very good story though the ending seems rushed
Maybe the title of the series should have been Cop and Healer rather than Killer and Healer, but I guess Killer and Healer has a nicer ring to it.The story of how a Republican-era policeman and a doctor come together and work against the illegal opium trade in their city, linked to a conspiracy to stage a coup, is compelling. Instead of relying too heavily on "shocking" plot twists that some may find predictable, the series prepares the audience from the start for certain revelations about the identity of the masterminds behind the conspiracy while making the possibilities open enough to keep us guessing. The story is thus presented with aplomb.
As an adaptation of a BL novel, the series plays safe and largely erases the BL between the two main characters, Jiang Yuelou and Chen Yuzhi. At times, this appears a little schizophrenic. While we see the characters referring to each other as brothers (the bromance sort of brothers), we also see a hint of a romantic relations when Chu Ran (who is in love with Yuelou) see the two of them together and seem to understand that she does not stand a chance.
Comparatively, the relationship between Zhan Junbai and the opera singer, Boss Yu, is full of homosexual innuendo that is cleverly depicted, with them singing the opera, Farewell My Concubine, together and with allusions to historical figures like Dong Xian and Emperor Ai. Despite how Zhan later uses the word "friend" to describe how he treats Boss Yu, the affections he displays seem more like romantic love. Perhaps it was less of a risk to place such innuendo in the supporting characters.
Unless you are watching it solely for BL, the series tells a very good story. The only part I find disappointing in the ending -- both the original ending and the alternative happy ending versions. In the last episode, the masterminds of the conspiracy are too easily defeated. In a different story, it would likely have been fine. However, for a series that relies very heavily on the resourcefulness of the villain, the ending appears a little too rushed and sudden. Spoiler:
In the original ending, the villain is shot to death after killing one of the main characters while, in the alternative ending, the villain is caught before that can happen (this is simply narrated through an intertitle), Given the way the villain is portrayed as a ridiculously cautious person with a knack for hatching elaborate plots and a very calm disposition, the way he suddenly appears to shoot one of the main characters in public seems a little off character even when he is already driven to desperation. As for the alternative ending, the way he is caught is not even shown. I'm not sure if the original ending is faithful to the novel, but if liberties are to be taken with the source material, I would rather have the villain dying after being defeated--even if it is by suicide (since he seems to be prepared for every possible scenario anyway).
One thing I really love about this series is Mao Zijun's performance in this series as Jiang Yuelou. He very much brings the character to life by coherently portraying the different aspects of the character. He manages to seamlessly bring together the many facets of the character he plays: a cop with an uncompromising sense of righteousness, a man with emotional issues and hiding the childhood trauma he has undergone, a lonely man who wishes his cat would live a few more years to keep him company, a remorseful person who has failed to do something when a girl is kidnapped, an occasional playful grown-up and even a socially inept person who would simply ask a woman whether she likes him when the idea is suggested to him. (And more.) I can imagine how a different actor would have made the one person seem like many different characters instead.
Despite the somewhat disappointing ending, the series is really compelling throughout. I kept finding myself surprised by how quickly each episode seems to end. It's hard to stop after you start watching it.

Good show, amazing characters and chemistry between them, unexpected turn of events
I came for the bromance, and I was not disappointed. Not only do the main leads have amazing chemistry (there loving stares and touches) but the story is also really good!! It had a lot of turns that were unexpected. The supporting roles were also played really well. They all had interesting relations to each other, and had a dynamic growth.Mayor spoilers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!: Halfway it starts to get a bit heart-breaking, because they start killing of characters. They were not afraid to do so! Only one of the main leads and one of the supporting characters remain at the end. The last episode is brutal.

The casting of the various characters in the drama was perfect. The casting director/team has done a commendable job.The drama was really good and did well until episode 24.In this episode Jiang Yue Lou learns about Chen Yu Zhi's death after being shot by him.He apparently is feeling guilty and is appearing to be sad while drinking .In the resulting scenes talking aloud by himself he says that he wouldn't let Yu Zhi die in vain and that after everything was over he would go find him to 'apologize'. Is he serious. This is actually quite selfish and inhuman of him. So he will make undercover plans with his superior and use an innocent civilian to prove himself for it and when the person dies he thinks he can get away with it by just an apology. That was blatant misuse of his position.So if Yu Zhi had really died Jiang planned to just say a sorry at his grave and carry on normally with his life and his promoted position in his job happily ? He would have enjoyed a marriage with Chu Ran and lived like an innocent and upright officer. What a selfish and conceited person .He should have thought to turn himself in after the completion of the mission and to accept legal punishment by law. He was shown as a righteous cop until then.But this ruined everything. Did he really think that he should have gotten away with what he had done.
At the end actually it was he who deserved to die and not Chen Yu Zhi. But alas the good ones die early and wicked and evil people like Jiang Yue Lou outlive everyone.

The best series (at least for me)
I would really recommend this one. I feel in love with it and it totally changed something in me. I even like it more than Word of honor, Untamed, and so on..❤️Dont forget to read the novel too, but unfortunately, the translation is not completed. Only to chapter 27.

Acting is on point, in the series its really beautifully done. Even tho, they didint touched each other much (only in cut scenes) you can still feel the love between charcters.
Also to not forget to mention, in the novel you will get more hugs and even a kiss (but not really a full legit kiss).
The scenes and angles of the cameras are shot beautifully. Everything is very sophisticated. It can be seen that the staff probably had a good budget.
Also.. The music, which was sang by the main actor. (the main theme song) I listen to it, even to this day. It is still in my playlist.

Underated gem!
*Slams hand against table* Now that's the good stuff!As much as I liked "Word of Honor", I feel like this show didn't get the attention it deserves. The two shows can't be compared as the two are very different, the only thing in common is the bromance that is based on a BL novel. However, WoH overshadowed "Killer and Healer" in viewing charts, though both shows had great chemistry between the main leads. Dr Chen and Jiang Yuelou had one of the best chemistry on screen, they are my no. 1 CP on 2021. I think among all the danmei I wantched, they were the main lead couple that I loved (yeah, not a wangxian shipper, they suck, wenzhou are good, I like them but not as much as... JiangChen? what is the ship's name? asking for a fanfi-I meant friend). The way their relationship was developed was written so well, something that 90% of c-dramas fail to do.
I loved almost all characters. I think Chu Ran is the only one I had problems with regarding the acting- it feels like she saved the acting ability to the scenes in the last episodes. She was too robotic, but somehow it didn't pull me off from the plot. I do think the guy who plays Zhan Junbai looks a bit too soft for his role, but not something that bothered me. Also, I recognize the actor of Boss Yu from the romance of tiger and rose, he fits the role of a gentleman. I love the man. Jin Dacheng was a character whom I didn't think much at first, but he was so awesome (and may I say even good-looking) in the last episode. I don't like comissionr Bai and his attitude towards his wife, but the actors were great.
The music was great, it was beautiful.
The story is good. I think it's better than WoH cuz in this series I didn't skip much (there was one or two scenes that I skipped). There were times the story was a bit weak, but overall I was drawn to the show. I think there were episodes I didn't feel the time was passing by, I was that engaged.

The best bromance drama
This is my favorite bromance drama. I rewatch it many time. The actors are also excellent. I didn't know these drama. I knew this drama one year after release. I like the storyline but i am not confortable with ending but overall is very very very good. I want to see the main cast in another drama. I love main casts so much especially Mao Zijun. His acting are incredibl also Yipo Chen and other cast too. Their friendship is very strong they trust each other i want a friend like them. if you are bl fan or detective fan or bromance fan this is for you I highly recommend this drama.Vond je deze recentie nuttig?
I'm speechless.
It took me three months to get through this masterpiece (which is highly unusual for me) because it's so intense I had to keep pausing along the way to recover emotionally. It's brilliant. 37 eps de pura perfeição
O drama seria perfeito se não tivesse sido transformado num bromance, mas fora isso, nada a reclamar! Os 37 eps foram todos maravilhosos, uma história coesa em que todos os detalhes vão se encaixando como peças de quebra- cabeça. Não existem eps desnecessários, até naqueles mais enfadonhos, é possível perceber que algo aconteceu ali que fará sentido mais na frente.Jiang Yuelou, apesar da bipolaridade, não saiu do personagem de justiceiro em nenhum momento, bem como Chen Yuzhi, que apesar de todos os empecilhos, não se desvia do objetivo principal, encontrar sua irmã. Os outros personagens são muito interessantes, mas Chu Han precisa ser ovacionada, pois além do fato de ser mulher, era uma mulher independente e corajosa a ponto de se juntar a nossos heróis e brigar por justiça; e existe a questão de ver a cultura chinesa de época, que me fascina. Uma coisa que me encanta na série, e que está posta em primeiro plano mas nem sempre é percebida, é a forma como as relações interpessoais acontecem, como é possível as pessoas fingirem de forma magistral, mentirem e traírem com um sorriso no rosto e um tapinha nas costas.
Não existe nenhum aspecto técnico digno de críticas, inclusive a ost deveria ser premiada, pq é extremamente coerente com todo o contexto, e os instrumentais são a cereja do bolo nas cenas dramáticas ou misteriosas, além de serem perfeitas e trazerem o tom melancólico que a série propõe. A ambientação é perfeita, a filmografia da série nos remete ao frio que aparenta reinar, juntamente com as cores neutras que são utilizadas na maior parte do tempo.
Existe um casal secundário: Yu Tang Chin e Zhan Jun Bai, os dois tem personalidades opostas (ou não) e gostam de coisas parecidas. Entre eles existe uma relação que vai se mostrar bem tóxica em um ponto, quando descobrimos que Yu Tang Chin se aproximou de Zhan Jun Bai, se aproveitando da confiança que compartilhavam, para matá-lo e vingar sua parente morta por Zhan Jun Bai, que na verdade é um criminoso. Como a história deles se conecta com nossos protagonistas? Zhan Jun Bai sofre de uma doença respiratória que requer muito cuidado, e por isso o Dr. Chen Yuzhi acaba sendo próximo dele. Já o desquerido Zhan Jun Bai, é na verdade participante da rede de tráfico de ópio que Jiang Yuelou luta para combater.
Em suma, não existem personagens desnecessários, todos fazem parte de uma grande engrenagem e tem função vital na série, não existem pessoas colocadas por acaso. Cada história particular se liga aos protagonistas, todo o elenco atua muito bem e tem muita química.
O que me arrasou nesse drama foi apenas o final triste, mas vc pode pular essa cena e buscar o final alternativo para sofrer menos.

First and foremost I'm not picky when it comes to binge watching action dramas or any other types of dramas. I've been watching Korean dramas for close to a year and I guess trying to watch a different type of drama have me hitting my head against the wall.
Every episode that I stomached in this series was the same except it involved different suspects. The main male lead had a hangup about illegal opium smuggling and he was trying to track down who was behind the smuggling in every episode. Each time he found a mole they die and the episode gets recycled and then there's another mole who gets caught and die and then that gets recycled to another episode where there's another mole who gets caught and then they....yeah, you get the picture.
The first episode was all over the place for me. Besides the fact that I can't speak a lick of Chinese, the subtitles was so off it made the plot hard to follow. Plus there were times when the text appeared too fast and would jump to the next line of dialogue. I had to pause A LOT just to see what was said and by most of the translations being off I tried to translate myself what the correct English sentence should sound like.
I was also disturbed by the relationship the two main males had. In my opinion it wasn't a 'bromance'. It looked like they were falling in love with each other which is something that I'm truly not interested in seeing. Them touching each others hands and smiling at each other...yeah, that's not bromance.
The cinematography was amazing but the audio was truly weird. It sounded like it was dubbed over in a studio and they just attached the track to the actual episode. You could hear the movement of clothes, breathing-things that would get scrubbed out in audio editing.
I tried to sit through episode ten but as I mentioned earlier about moles getting caught, this was like the other 9 so I just went to find something else.
I think this was the second Chinese drama that I dropped. I have yet to find one that piques my interest. Sadly this one did not.

Note to Self
I've tried watching this twice. Despite reviewers having listed The Untamed, Guardian, and Winter Begonias as recommendations (all three that were enjoyable), this series really doesn't have the same feel at all to any of them. But I should have known to not trust recommendations when it comes to BL-related series.There's nothing outrageously terrible about this series. Dropping it for the same reasons why I've dropped many other well-known and relatively highly reviewed ones. The dialogue and interactions between all of the characters are just unnatural and cringe. It's not necessarily an actor or plot issue, but perhaps it's just how some Chinese series are directed or maybe partially due to the dubbing. Similar to the flow of older American soap operas- it's just not believable. And while Guardian also had tinges of this flaw, the two MLs had much more chemistry and the plot moved along more smoothly.

So I'm writing this as a person who watched 3 episodes. I can't fully tell about acting story etc but I'm gonna let this pass . For me the relationship between male leads it's too fast paced for my liking and the thing mc sister is kidnapped and he's going around helping others. This is just something wrong. Maybe this story didn't do anything for me bc I don't really like 1920-1930 setting to begin with. As for acting I can't say anything it was ok I guess from what I've seen.I really counted on a really slow burn relationship but seeing two main characters helping each other from the first or second ep is really not for me. Also adding this female character I don't know if it's for creating a love line or something else but at this point it's unnecessary for me since it is bromance drama. And it could hold back people from watching. People clicking on this drama just expects bromance and when we get female character that is important in this people can be irritated.
