She remembers that she has to attend the royal banquet that evening. A plan pops up in her mind : she will seek Prince Jing's help. Later on, as she arrives at the banquet among the first groupe of 25 beauties. Momai poison starts to flare up. Mei Lin has more and more difficulties to play the complying and obedient peace-making beauty. Quick, she must speak to Prince Jing. But will the Crown Prince spoil her plan? He seems decided to give her the "eastern palace jade". While Mei Lin approaches her hand to receive it, Prince Jing suddenly stands up and walks at her. The banquet attendants are shocked. She is hanging by the wrists with a rope, a meter above the ground, in a prison cell. It's been hours since the first tortures and harsh interrogation sessions began. She is weak and injured. All her body suffers. She softly whispers : « I cannot die ». It was the legacy of her dying father. His order binds her, she has to survive. After the torture, as she is linning on the wall of this dark and dirty prison cell.For the very first time, Mei Lin notices the undying flowers fighting their way to life. She crawls painfully at this living beacon of hope. In case she lie down by them, would she be able to sense their fragrance? As she slowly whispers « un- dy- ing ». Prince Jing, who was watching her with admiration and care, also slowly whispers « un- dy- ing ». They just vowed to survive that deadly quest. The undying flower represent them. Mei Lin and Murong Jing He must live. They just made an oath of survival.

At the moment when Murong Xuan Li presents herself to choose Mei Lin, Jing He gets up from his wheelchair and surprises everyone who thought he was disabled. The Momai poison was collapsing in Mei Lin's body but she found the strength to try to fulfill her mission of killing Murong Jing He. The ceremony ends with Murong Jing He lying on the ground after Mei Lin stabbed him with a hairpin. But it wasn't in a deadly place, as he later realized. The inner silk armor protected him. But Jing He, 10 years ago, underwent a painful and radical treatment to avoid becoming disabled. He kept pretending to continue with the plan to deceive his enemies. Mei Lin is chained and suffers torture at the hands of Murong Xuan Li. Jing He doesn't allow her to be killed, but he knows that she will endure the torture because she was prepared for it. Jing He watches Mei Lin's conversation with the immortal flower. He pays attention to this and reflects inwardly. His eyes at this moment seemed moved as he watched Mei Lin crawling on the dirty ground and talking to the small flowers that grew between the small holes in the stone floor.

At the beginning of ep. 3 we have Jinghe drunk painting a picture of a woman, back towards us, reaching towards a branch with blossoms. She has a dress with blue patterns and a white shawl. Someone grabs his hand and he responds, "Beauty" tries to kiss the hand. I wondered who the woman in the painting was. But 'Beauty' would indicate that it was Mei Lin and the kiss shows that by ep. 3, he had feelings for her, More than the gossip and our understanding of the character would indicate.

Great insight on your part. And isn't that the same drawing he gifted Mei Lin episodes later and she disrespectfully throws it into the river?
