Ambition, Resilience and Complex personal relationships,

"The Rise of Ning" is a compelling drama series that explores themes of ambition, resilience, and the complexities of personal relationships. I was addicted and eagerly awaited each new episode. In my top 3 costume dramas 2024 so far…

Overall, "The Rise of Ning" is a captivating series that successfully blends drama and realism, offering viewers an insightful look at ambition and its consequences. With some refinement in pacing and dialogue, it could elevate its impact even further. Fans of character-driven narratives and social themes will likely find it an enjoyable watch.

Strengths
Character Development : The central character, Ning, undergoes significant transformation throughout the series. Her journey from obscurity to prominence is well-crafted, showcasing her struggles and triumphs. Ning reintegrates quickly and smoothly back into the Luo family.

Narrative Structure: The storyline is engaging, with a balance of tension and emotional depth. The pacing is effective, keeping viewers invested in Ning’s challenges and victories.

Cinematography: The visual aesthetics are noteworthy, with vibrant colors and dynamic camera work that enhances the storytelling. Locations are beautifully captured, contributing to the series' immersive atmosphere.

Themes: The series addresses important social issues, including gender equality and the sacrifices made for success, making it not only entertaining but also thought-provoking.

Supporting Cast: The ensemble cast adds depth to the narrative. Each character has a distinct role, contributing to the overall storyline and helping to highlight Ning's evolution. Each actor executed their role really well, especially the ML and FL. Duke Wei was a particularly uplifting well thought out character.

Areas for Improvement

Subplots: Some subplots are not as well developed as the main story, leaving audiences wanting more depth or resolution for certain secondary characters.

Pacing Issues: While the series generally maintains a good rhythm, some episodes feel rushed, particularly during pivotal moments of character development. More time could be spent on these transitions.

Dialogue: At times, the dialogue feels overly scripted or dramatic, which may detract from the authenticity of the characters' interactions. More natural dialogue could enhance viewer connection. The story was left a little waning in places, the main male protagonist behaviour with the FL was not historically correct - entering and leaving her abode at will…

Predictability: Certain plot twists may come off as predictable, which could diminish the impact of major revelations in later episodes. Introducing unexpected elements could enhance the suspense.

A very good series, catchy & feel-good (with a satisfaying ending)

PLOT: FL, the legitimate daughter banished from a family of scholars, returns to the manor for her grandmother's birthday. She comes up against her father's evil concubine, whom she suspects of having killed her mother. She begins her investigations, helped by the ML, "Third brother" not recognized by his father because he was born to a servant. He investigates incognito the death of his mentor. Together they will face the family problems, the corrupt officials, the evil ex lover, ...

+++ A great lead couple.
+++ Eye-catching production, where we discover the clues little by little.
+++ Coherent, well-written story, respecting the roles and status of the characters.
+++ enjoyable OSTs

### Slow pace (but bearable)
### Sometimes the green background is too obvious :(

=> A very good series, catchy & feel-good (with a satisfaying ending)

Inverted Corners

It was a good series in general. It wouldn't be a lie if I said I got bored towards the end. I watched it by skipping some parts. I was surprised in the 39th and 40th episodes. The scriptwriter wanted to make us twists and turns, and good things happened in the first twist. In the second twist, the Jia Xua character, who was assigned to the border, is removed from the Guard Command and asked to go to a new duty station. A couple of scenes later, this character kidnaps Yi Ning, detonates explosives. He kills many people. He also breaks the Prime Minister character out of prison. Then, to the Shen Yuan character who wants to stop him, he says I am the Guard Commander and I am arresting you. The scriptwriter is saying what a diet, what a pickled cabbage. You know, this guy was removed from the Guard Commander and was going to a new duty station. How did he become the Guard Commander again, and block the road with a lot of soldiers, kill people, and kidnap people? It didn't work. Because the Emperor dismisses him. A man who is dismissed can never do that job again. He took it but he still can't say Commander, I'm still here. A Commander was already given in his place. These parts were left vague and in the end, this person suffered the consequences of what he did. He died. The incident ended. It was a happy ending. But these last two episodes overshadowed all the previous episodes and unfortunately left a bad impression on me, causing me to give the series 7.5 instead of 8.5.
The series actually started well but the plot got complicated. This prevented a good progress. The story did not continue the same from beginning to end.
I think the shining star of the series was Ci Sha. I have watched her before but she really made her presence felt in this series. She played a fixed-minded, obsessive lover and a despotic man beautifully. She was very successful with two separate identities. She overshadowed the leading roles. I like Zhang Wan Yi. I have watched a lot of her series. She has a certain line. It doesn't spoil it. She is a good actor. I liked it. I can't say the same for Ren Min. I watched one of her series before. It wasn't bad but I felt like she was a bit flighty or something, she couldn't give herself to the role. I didn't like his voice either. They didn't grin much as a duo, but Ren Min fell short. My opinion. He should focus on his roles a little more. He should get into it. The voice and dubbing should work. I liked all the other supporting roles. The acting was very good except for a couple of grins. The costumes were very nice. It was sparkling. The shooting was very good. Congratulations to the director. I don't congratulate the scriptwriter. You can watch it to pass the time.

Comecei a assistir The Rise of Ning por causa do ator Zhang Wan Yi. Eu havia assistido antes Are You The One e gostei da performance dele e quis conferir um pouco mais.

DONT UNDERSTAND WHY FL ACTED LIKE THAT

FL once loved 2nd ML. she is smart and understanding. but when it came to Lu Jiaxue, she became so clueless. such as when LJ interrogated her, when LJ blocked her way, LJ forced her, LJ being cruel to the Luo family members, she became so passive and submissive. she should tell LJ directly that she didnt love him anymore, hate him and etc. she was not smart here.

she was not being honest to ML. she was angry to ML cause he didnt tell her a secret. but she also got a secret between her and LJ (she told ML later). i felt it kinda annoying.

2nd ML repeatedly harmed her in many ways. but she still respected him everytime he went to see her. she didnt feel scared or at least feel disgusting or annoyed, i just dont understand. it potrayed as if she allowed LJ did everything to her.

not to mention her acting was a bit “wooden”. her tone was almost same when she was angry, sad, happy, confused or scared. her facial expressions though were very bad.

i really dont satisfy with her acting. i wont complain about her voice. but her acting was really not up to par with ML. sorry i need to rate low because of her.

ML did a great job. but fl needs to improve her acting in next dramas.

More of Mystery Than a Romance

**This is just my opinion. I truly appreciate all of the hard work and dedication that went into the production of this drama. Thank you.**

In an effort to keep this short and spoiler free, I'm going to skip the plot summary and just cut to the chase. This is a good drama with talented actors who did a great job. It felt more like a mystery/life/family historical drama for most of the episodes rather than a romance. Yes, there was romance and multiple couples but they were overshadowed by a ridiculous amount of actual murder and mayhem. You would expect that inside a palace or something like that but this was just a mid level official's family.

Ultimately, the only character that I was really rooting for was Lu Jia Xue, played by Ci Sha. I wanted him to get his redemption arc and happy ending. I wish that his and Luo Yi Ning's relationship was explored more in depth. It was interesting and the emotion felt real. I didn't get that from the relationship between Luo Shen Yuan, played by Zhang Wan Yi and Luo Yi Ning, played by Ren Min. Not that it wasn't there. I was just more drawn to the story between Lu Jia Xue and Luo Yi Ning, the desperate longing his character felt for her, the tear filled look in her eyes when she spoke to him---all of that was moving. The relationship between Luo Shen Yuan and Luo Yi Ning is more like a warm friendship in comparison.

If you like your dramas filled with a lot of revenge, scheming, attempted murder, etc. then you'll probably love this drama. If, however, that's not your thing, you might want to skip this one.

A middling family.

I came to this drama right after watching Are You the One (AYTO), which also starred Zhang Wanyi, because I hadn't seen him in anything else. He seems to play basically the same character, with much of the same facial expressions and demeanor, except he was funnier in AYTO. In both dramas, his character is not actually as close in relationship to the FL as it appears to her, and which he is to some extent along with some other things hiding from her, including for instance being the head of an influential organisation of some sort, and also playing himself down in so doing. The cadence of his voice was pretty much identical in several scenes, to the point that it felt the roles could have been interchanged without too much of an issue.

This is the first time I have seen Ren Min in anything, and I must honestly say I was not particularly impressed. I found her acting quite one-dimensional in that, in my impression, she seemed to have a limited set of expressions throughout the drama. Her younger self where she meets the character of Lu Jia Xue (LJX) in the villa does not seem much different from her portrayal in the rest of the drama, and even by the ending, there did not seem to me to come across a sense of maturation or growth. There was a lack of depth and gravitas as well as range in her acting that would have elevated the role and character, and I would be curious to have seen another actress in the role.

The story and execution could have been much better - the initial arc from the family drama to the later more broadly political arc felt to me like it had become another story. Even the arcs within the initial family drama did not feel like they transitioned smoothly for me; there was quite a clear initial Concubine Qiao arc, then the next bit, then the graduation to the broader politicking. When the first Concubine Qiao arc concluded, I found myself thinking 'What, already?', because it felt so short and almost abrupt. I was also not a fan of the way they used brief flashbacks and exposition perfunctorily to explain what had happened in the plot instead of having shown it as part of the story. There were also some loopholes that felt glaring to me and annoyed me significantly throughout, like the way no one even bothered to check on or treat Luo Shenyuan's back after he sustained a wound early on in the drama, including Yining herself or even the doctor he got to come treat the Old Madam. While arguable that this was to show how little he was cared for or thought of, I also thought it made Yining herself come across thoughtless towards him and selfish.

Yining was an annoying and selfish character to me overall - she tells Shenyuan off for not letting her in on what he's doing on more than one occasion, and then at one point declares that they will keep no secrets from each other, but at which point she had not even told him about her relationship with LJX herself despite him having asked previously. This really came across as a double standard that made clear it applied mostly one way to him, which really irked me. Thankfully he prompted her after said statement, at which point she reluctantly tells him. Additionally, despite her supposedly not being favoured in the family, she is clearly highly cared for by her grandmother/the Old Madam, and her stepmother Lin Hairu/the Madam, who look out for her in every way; this is not even mentioning Shenyuan. Sure, she is plotted against by Concubine Qiao and those half-siblings, but she still behaves recklessly and as she wishes well enough with the support of the Old Madam and the Madam, taking things over to Shenyuan and getting him into their good books and so on. Her selfishness with regard to LJX is also apparent and she also comes across as really immature in her having indulged in a dalliance with him but then never bothering to speak with him outright to clear things up, even after she comes to the conclusion of needing to face up to him.

Yining's makeup also seemed really thick on one or more occasion, and one close-up of her face with the really obvious false eyelash extensions really took me out of it. Ren Min's voice was also to me very grating and whiny-sounding. While these are no fault of her own, they added significantly to my annoyance of Yining.

The plot was so-so, nothing to write home about, it did the job. I don't think it needed to be 40 episodes though, and I felt there was a lot of fat that could have been trimmed off. The thing with the Princess' son, for instance, probably wouldn't have been missed at all.

I was not a fan of the brother-sister relationship basis and thought it could have done much better if the writers had included showing some conflict within Yining about her brother suddenly becoming no longer her brother, and the rest of the family she had grown up in as well. I also felt the show would have benefitted significantly if there had been more of a character transition shown between Yining going from thinking of Shenyuan as her brother to a romantic interest. Instead, she calls him Third Brother until the end of the show, and in fact when she does call him Guan Ren instead, that also felt weird. I would have liked if there had been some kind of change to at least maybe calling him with his name or something.

Because the whole premise of the brother-sister relationship felt wrong to me to begin with, the theme music for them annoyed me every time it came on. While LJX was absolutely basically a stalker, I did not find the concept of an older brother harbouring romantic feelings for their younger sister when said younger sister knows them solely as an older brother particularly compelling, personally, and am kind of surprised no one complained about it being predatory or the like. Again, I think this could have been done well if the writers had perhaps shown some conflict or at least processing in Shenyuan and Yining at finding out, and I would have greatly appreciated a good transition of Yining coming around to seeing Shenyuan in a romantic light as someone who would be a good husband/the way other ladies saw him and realising that her feelings for him were changing, because it was clear that she had thought of him as an older brother early on, e.g. with saying to find her a sister-in-law.

My favourite character turned out to be Duke Ying, who was a lovely character and a true heart of familial feeling. The rest of the actors did fine, and the acting was overall the high point of this drama. I also liked the styling, and the sets were pretty. Rewatch value is low for me because I did not enjoy the premise nor the execution very much, and found the storyline kind of draggy. It would have been better if they had chosen to focus on Shenyuan's machinations, but even that story bit took too much of a turn without adequate explanation at the end. There was much that could have been improved in the writing.

Finally, I found myself quite compelled by the LJX relationship aspect - I would have loved to watch another story, where the 'man is downtrodden by his older brother and has an eye illness rendering him temporarily blind, a girl comes into his life whom he falls in love with and then disappears, he searches for her for years, then finds her, not knowing there was a misunderstanding that has caused her to believe he harmed her' comes to a happy ending. I hope someone makes this retelling.

(The other compelling aspect for me was the older uncle's backstory and his feelings towards his childhood friend whom he did not get to marry, which was only a minorly-played point informing an arc. If there had been a swap between who had had to marry whom, things would have turned out much differently.)

Overall, this was a rather milquetoast showing with the exception of a few stronger standout points.

Newest favorite Actor

This is the 3rd drama of Zhang Wan Yi that I have watched. His character in Lost You Forever is my favorite and the sole reason why I was able to finished the first season. Second Drama was Are you the One and I was hooked from the very start. I just wished the story was longer. I developed a routine to watch it every single night. I'm so happy that he is in this drama, I don't have to wait that long to see him act. This is my first time giving a review and i apologize if it is all about ZWY. The story is good so far. There is enough screen time for each character. At first, I was bothered by the Female lead's voice quality but later on I got used to it. It's just that usually for strong and clever character, tone of voice is stable and calm. I know the story is about her but I'm actually more excited inZWY character's revelation. That he is not who they think he is.

Pretty Good Drama

My favorite actors in this drama are the Uncle and "over weight" sister, plus the cute as hell goose. They are the scene stealers every time they show up IMO. I laugh at their antics over to eat or not eat the goose. I wish their was a different FL and this would be a perfect drama. FL's acting has not improved and her monotone and baby talk words are ridiculous to listen to. I truly wish one of the hundreds of actresses that China has, a different one could have been chosen. Oh well, all the other characters are great.

Would have been better if it was a different FL actress that uses annoying baby-voice.

I wanted to love this drama - been waiting for it since I completed Are You the One which I loved. Going from Are You the One to Rise of Ning was such a let-down.

Rise of Ning's FL, Ren Min's uses this cloyingly sweet, baby voice. It's so hard to take her seriously but even if you set aside her voice, her acting is unimpressive and seems unnatural and wooden. She shows no vulnerability and her tone is always the same, whether she's sad, happy or mad! So frustrating - the best part of the drama is Zhang Wan Yi and Ci Sha (ML and 2nd ML). I don't see any chemistry between ML and the FL sadly.

I'll only continue watching only for ZWY and Ci Sha who are both very hot, might I add.

A bubble (tea) drama

I’m sure it comes as no surprise that most drama will try to grab you and hook you as soon as possible. First impression is very important after all. This is why this drama left me perplexed.

I started to watch and halfway through the first episode, I had to stop and checked that I’m not watching ep.2 or even ep.3 by mistake. This was unsettling and caught me off guard. The reason for this is that the drama starts with little preamble. We are introduced to a large cast but there is not much to hook you. Much happens but what are their context? Why should we care?

This is probably a good point to pause and explain why I called this a bubble drama. I coin this phase because this show exists in its own bubble. There is little point in pinpointing the historical context. Costumes and backdrops are fairly generic. It also play hard and fast with some key cultural norms. I can understand they have to do it to make the story work, but it is self-serving. Its inconsistency means you are constantly second guessing the story's rationale. This extends to minor twists which are nonsensical but necessary to get the plot out of a bind. OBTW, if the show gets to the point where it is overloaded with artificial sweeteners then it will be a bubble tea drama. :)

Granted, most turnkey idol dramas are poured from the same mould. It is not a hanging offense if that is its only problem. In this case, we have some fundamental issues with the basic premise. For example, the title is The Rise of Ning. However, while she was sent away as a child, she grew up just fine and is well educated and provided for. She is fully supported by the senior wife as soon as she returns. Her grandmother dotes on her. She is resourceful and well adjusted. She is the heir apparent to the family fortune. This is just as well because her father is a hapless tool. How much higher can she rise, Queen Ning mayhaps?

She set about to right some wrongs done by her father's favourite concubine almost immediately. She and her spoil daughter neither have the means nor the brains to do more than simple dirty tricks. Tiresome and despicable they may be but hardly evil masterminds. What is odd is the official wife was long suffering but grew a backbone as soon as Ning shows up. There is also a mysterious "puppet master" but his motives are hazy. He might even be closely related to the FL.

The ML is also treated poorly by the family as a semi illegitimate son yet he is a great martial artist and a scholar to boot. There is no explanation of how he reaches those heights with limited resources. On top of that, he has assembled a crack team who is willing to die for his cause. I'm sure more will be revealed but consider at the 1/4 mark, we are still lacking a clear focus, it is testing. From my perspective, both our leads are already standing on solid ground with little room to improve. Compare this to recent shows like Blossoms in Adversity or The Double and you will know how low the protagonist can get.

Then there are the constant chatter about scandals and arrange marriages but that's old news and boring, to be honest. All the typical high society shenanigans are present and accounted for.

May be we can look towards the romantic plotline to lift the story? This is where it is even more problematic. Oh wait! Our OTP are supposed to be brother and sister sharing the same father. By ep.8, the ML has found out that the FL was not related by blood after all. That might fix the basic moral problem but the FL doesn't know that and any relationship between them would be technically incestuous. I'm sure she would find out soon as the Chinese censors would not allow this to stand. It still makes for some awkwardness as their attraction builds. The writer might lean more into this just to inject some angst in an otherwise flat drama.

Adding to its woes, I have to confess that I don't ship the leads. Yes, they make a handsome couple but their chemistry is questionable. We know they are the OTP because that is obvious. There is no plan 'B'.

On the other hand, the production value is decent if pedestrian, the OST is serviceable. Most of the support cast are from central casting but they try.

It is watchable and mildly entertaining but it never hooked me. So after 9 eps, I've decided to park it for now. It is not a hard “NO” but more “can't be bothered”. Peace.

ML face is like a mannequin

The story was interesting in the beginning but as it progressed ML developed feelings for the FL as soon as he knew that she is not blood related.

Sibling relationship is one of the purest. You need a convoluted mind to jump into a loving relationship with someone whom you knew lifelong and called sister. Even after getting past this complicated relationship, I couldn't enjoy this because of the ML acting. He is like a statue with no emotions(This is not the only drama that I have noticed). Eyes should speak volume but he barely blinked his eyes. A great actor uses eyes to convey sentiments and passions but I noticed none of those.

Many people in the comments praised the ML voice. Just remember he is an actor not a voice actor. One should possess great acting if not the other.

I continued watching this for the FL , SML and the step-mom acting. The legal step-mom character was so bold and refreshing and she portrayed it very well.
