Actress Lee Joo Shil passed away at the age of 80 following her battle with cancer.
On February 2, the veteran actress's agency, Ilsam Gong Culture, stated to JoongAng Ilbo, "The deceased had been battling stomach cancer and passed away around 10:20 this morning."
According to her agency, the late actress visited a hospital in November last year after experiencing health issues and was diagnosed with stomach cancer. She had been undergoing treatment for three months before passing away at the home of her second child in Uijeongbu, Gyeonggi Province.
Lee Joo Shil was also diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer in 1993. Lee Joo Shil had previously shared on shows that she went through a difficult time due to breast cancer. In the past, she was given a prognosis of only one year to live, but as time passed, she eventually fully recovered after battling the illness for 13 years.
Despite her long battle with illness, she not only graduated from university but also earned a doctorate in public health from Wonkwang University in 2010.
The late actress debuted as a theater actress in 1965 and rose to prominence in the 1970s and 1980s, starring in plays such as "Death of a Salesman" and "Macbeth." She also starred in K-movies including Notebook from My Mother and Train to Busan, as well as dramas including Happiness, Move to Heaven, and The Uncanny Counter.
