Kaeg's Top GLs of 2024

Thought it would be fun to make this list. These are series that I've watched.  I haven't watched everything, so if it's something missing, let me know.

If I could give this series a 15/10, I would. I can't say anything bad about this series. Everything from the casting to the acting to the sets, soundscapes, and music were all top-notch. The soundtrack for this show speaks to my soul just like when I first heard the soundtrack for the 1995 remake of the movie Sabrina. This series is the current peak (may stand for all time) of what a GL series can bring. I also feel like Freen and Becky (Pin and Anin) have set yet another standard for GL series, elevating what they did in Gap the series.  They are definitely the GOATS of GL. This series has been added to my list of all-time favorite TV series, including shows like Game of Thrones, Rome,  Stargate SG-1, MASH, The Golden Girls, Itaewon Class, etc. I couldn't recommend this series highly enough and it is most definitely rewatchable. Why can't I buy this series on Blu-ray? Why can't I buy this soundtrack on CD or digital media?

I almost feel like this series doesn't belong on a GL list. I say that because this show feels more like a Crime Procedural drama with the leads in a GL relationship. As a lover of mysteries and crime/cop shows like Law & Order, I really love that this series is unique in that the relationship seems to take a backseat to the "murder of the week" premise of the show without diminishing the importance of the relationship. I also love the subplot of "Who's the Raindrop Killer". I love that the producers, writers, and actors did their homework in learning about their character's jobs in this show, and worked very hard to make this show feel real, gritty, and visceral.  Kudos to especially Engfa and Charlotte who are just elevating their game yet again. The make-up department deserves a raise and a bonus on this show. This show is only half over, but I feel like it will end up in one of my all-time favorites if this series can stick the landing, and it seems like they are well on the way to doing that. I recommend this show, especially if you like mysteries, but I would caution those squeamish about injuries to be prepared to see some gruesome stuff.

  • Jai Son Rak

    3. Jai Son Rak

    Thai Drama - 2024, 8 episodes

I love the story, the acting, and the music. I liked that this series has a quirkiness to it.  The chemistry between Ling Ling and Orm literally jumps off the screen (much like Freen and Becky), and though I don't cry a lot at movies, their acting often had me in tatters. I still can't completely rewatch episode 1 because of a certain scene that tore me up inside in a way that I still haven't quite recovered. My only issue with this series is some redemptions didn't feel earned, but it wasn't enough to take me out of the story. I would recommend this series.

  • Blank

    Thai Drama - 2024, 6 episodes

I love this series. Like many who read the synopsis of this story, I was a tad apprehensive to watch it, because of the gap in ages between the two main characters, but I am so glad that I am open-minded enough to give the series at least three episodes. Once, I did, I was hooked. Faye and Yoko's acting was some of the best I've seen in media period. The way they played the nuanced relationship of Nueng and Anueng is a sight to behold. I love how the average viewer's perspective of relationship archetypes was turned on its head in this story. I also loved that this story showed that the way a person is raised can either be a gift or a curse, depending on how it affects their emotional growth for future situations. This series was really thought-provoking to and made me re-evalute my hang-ups about age gaps, and that is a testament to how good it was. The only thing I didn't like about this series was the soundtrack. Season 1, the soundtrack (as a music addict) actually took me out of some scenes, and though Season 2 was definitely an improvement from season 1, there were still moments when the music took me out of the immersion of the story.

  • Affair

    5. Affair

    Thai Drama - 2024, 8 episodes

    9.5

Top-tier series.  The first time I've seen an actual shower scene in a GL series. Also, this series has one of the best love scenes I've seen in a GL series to date and could have been the best, if not for Freen and Becky saying "Hold our beers" in episode 16 of The Loyal Pin. Lookmhee and Sonya killed it in their roles and everyone else did an amazing job.  I can't wait to see what Lookmhee and Sonya get up to in their next series. The story is a good, albeit messy, and ever-so-slightly toxic time with a good message. The cinematography was top-notch, as was the soundtrack for the series. The title song for this series is going on my Spotify playlist. This is one I would recommend and rewatch.

  • Pluto

    6. Pluto

    Thai Drama - 2024, 12 episodes

    8.5

I don't want to spoil anything, but I will say that Namtam deserves all the awards for her portrayal of twin sisters, Ai and Oom. The story is good and complex. The acting is top-notch and the soundtrack isn't bad. There is a song or two that made it to my Spotify playlist. There's only one thing I didn't like about this series as a book reader, but it wasn't enough to take me out of the immersion. I recommend this series highly.

  • Deep Night Side Story

    7. Deep Night Side Story

    Thai Drama - 2024, 6 episodes

    9.5

This show had one of the best OST I've heard in a GL series to date. The story and acting were top-notch. I loved seeing a story about an older couple finding or rekindling love and getting together. What I want now is a prequel telling the story of Freya and Meiji as teens and young adults,  explaining why it took them til their 40s to finally get together as a couple.

  • Mate

    8. Mate

    Thai Drama - 2024, 12 episodes

So far, I like the story. I love Gen's character and the way she's acted. Gen is very much a tsundere and primadonna before she meets Aoey again. I love seeing her journey of going from someone who is very self-absorbed and someone who hates being defied to someone who is seemingly willing to give all just to make her special someone feel safe and happy. Aoey's character is acted well also. As someone who has gone through and had to deal with the repercussions of a situation like Aoey's, I can say that Oeay's portrayal is spot-on in many respects. The sets and production are done quite well and the soundtrack (what there is of it) is also well done. I'd recommend it, but I'll warn people to be ready for some tough subjects in this one.

    9. 23.5 Degree the World Incline

    Thai Drama - 2024, 12 episodes

    9.0

I really liked the fluffy, puppy-like feelings I get from this series. Though I will say that it has some positive lessons to take away from it about being able to accept yourself for who you are that I think many people need to hear nowadays--especially females. The acting was well done, the production and editing were good and the soundtrack was ok. I recommend this series, especially to those that like fluffy, first-lover tales--and I have rewatched it.

  • Apple

    10. Apple

    Thai Drama - 2024, 6 episodes

    8.5

This series felt very slice-of-life to me, and I love self-of-life series and anime. The acting was good. The story was very good, but as a reader of the book, I really wish we got a season of the story from Karn's point of view. This series had the right balance of fluff and seriousness as well. I recommend it.

  • Dream

    11. Dream

    Thai Drama - 2024, 12 episodes

    8.0

If you love a slow burn, this series is for you. I love the leads, Fay and May (their chemistry is crazy), but I also feel like the sleeper hit actors of this show are Looknam and Songjet. They had me rolling many times in this series. I feel like these two deserve their own lead roles in the future. The story is good and I love the supernatural aspect of using dreams to convert feelings. That being said, I do feel like storywise this show could have been 10 episodes instead of 12 and would have been better for it.  The soundtrack wasn't bad, and I really liked the crossing of characters from one GL series to another that seems to happen in the Chao Planoy GL Cinematic Universe.  Like I said, I recommend it.

  • Reverse 4 You

    12. Reverse 4 You

    Thai Drama - 2024, 8 episodes

    7.5

I love the mix of time travel and murder mystery in this series. I also love the twists that I didn't see coming. The acting is pretty good, yet the chemistry between Christine and Mae (Four and Jattawa) was kinda hit and miss for me. Liked seeing Yoko Apasra (Anueng from Blank) in a supporting role in this one as well. I'd recommend watching it, though I don't know if I'll personally rewatch it.

  • Unlock of Love

    13. Unlock of Love

    Thai Drama - 2024, 8 episodes

    7.5

On the whole, the story was good, though I wish there was better communication between some of the characters in it. The acting was good. The production did feel mediocre, but that may have been because of the budget. The soundtrack was mediocre as well, but that also may have been because of budget.  I recommend it as a 'bored watch' series.

  • Phi Wak Kha Rak Nu Dai Mai

    14. Phi Wak Kha Rak Nu Dai Mai

    Thai Drama - 2023, 10 episodes

    7.0

The acting was good. The story was good with enough obstacles and angst to keep viewers guessing. My only issue with the story and what took me out of the series as a whole was the ending (the last two or three episodes). I really hate the trope of a character getting injured, getting knocked unconscious, and waking up wth amnesia. I also didn't like that it took until the last...10 minutes of the series for a resolution to the amnesia arc. Lastly, the ending felt very rushed and an abrupt ending. I'm glad that they have a special mini-series continuation to this series. I hope that the miniseries fixes some of the problems that plagued the ending of the main series. If it does, this series may be redeemed.
