My Favorite Historical Dramas

My definition of a historical drama may be different from others. But I define a historical drama as one where the people don’t dress in modern clothing but wears the long flowing robes. And both sexes have the really long hair and there are no modern conveniences like cars or electricity. For that reason I put Eternal Love and similar dramas into the historical category. I know some might consider them to be in the sci-fi/fantasy category but I don’t. They have more of a historical feel to them so that’s where I put them.

  • Eternal Love

    1. Eternal Love

    Chinese Drama - 2017, 58 episodes

    10

You have everything here including warring gods, political intrigue, intense fight scenes, and evil characters you love to hate. But the epic love story is what sets this drama apart from its competitors. The main leads chemistry is off the charts. I love a good drama with a badass female lead and a strong protective male lead that isn’t afraid to show his feelings. The story is deep, it’s original, there’s lots of character growth, and the side characters are amazing.

  • The Story of Ming Lan

    2. The Story of Ming Lan

    Chinese Drama - 2018, 78 episodes

    10

One of the most interesting storylines of any drama I’ve seen. There’s political intrigue, cute side couples, great romance, and well done fight scenes. Don’t let the length of this drama hold you back, there’s never a dull moment. And it teaches a lot of life lessons.

  • Eternal Love of Dream

    3. Eternal Love of Dream

    Chinese Drama - 2020, 56 episodes

    9.0

This continues the story of Feng Jiu (9 tailed fox and queen of her people) and Dong Hua (former emperor) from “Eternal Love.” But it doesn’t pick up where it left off in “Eternal Love “ because they didn’t have the rights to their story and just made stuff up. This adheres to their story in the book. And it’s very much like “Eternal Love .” It has a great storyline and an epic romance.

  • The Eternal Love

    4. The Eternal Love

    Chinese Drama - 2017, 24 episodes

    9.0

There’s lots of romance and laugh out loud comedy In this one. The female lead is strong and tough. The male lead is sweet and charming. The multiple personalities and time travel weren’t my cup of tea so it moved down a little on my list. But the story has depth, the acting is really good, and they have great chemistry. You should give it a try.

  • The Eternal Love 2

    5. The Eternal Love 2

    Chinese Drama - 2018, 30 episodes

    9.0

Thankfully the multiple personalities trope is over but now we have to deal with amnesia. That being said, I just loved the romance and chemistry of the main leads. And the comedy was just perfect and well timed. I’m glad I watched it. They were just too cute.

  • Love and Destiny

    6. Love and Destiny

    Chinese Drama - 2019, 60 episodes

    9.0

This has a deep storyline that really pulls you in. It was produced by the same people that made “Eternal Love.” It takes place in the same world as “Eternal Love “ except it’s a prequel and takes place much earlier and has different characters. It’s very romantic with lots of interesting side characters and plots.

  • The Love by Hypnotic

    7. The Love by Hypnotic

    Chinese Drama - 2019, 36 episodes

    9.0

This story has a little bit of everything including great fight scenes, a steamy romance, plot twists, and hysterical comedy. But despite the deep storyline it somehow it still comes off as light and sweet. There’s some really great acting in this one!

  • Ashes of Love

    8. Ashes of Love

    Chinese Drama - 2018, 63 episodes

    8.5

Great acting, original storyline, amazing special effects, and a great romance. It’s often compared to “Eternal Love “ but I just don’t see it. “Eternal Love “ had its fair share of angst but nothing like this one. The main leads go through a tortuous romance that is painful at times to watch. But the sweetness of the romance and the great plot line makes it worth the watch.

  • General and I

    9. General and I

    Chinese Drama - 2017, 62 episodes

    8.0

He’s known as the God of War and she’s a genius military strategist on the opposing side. They have steamy kisses and an amazing romance. Together they would be unstoppable, therefore everyone does everything in their power to keep them apart. It had a little too much angst for my tastes but the amazing fight scenes, original storyline and touching romance keeps it in my top ten.

  • Love Better Than Immortality

    10. Love Better Than Immortality

    Chinese Drama - 2019, 40 episodes

    8.0

It’s light hearted and never takes itself seriously. There’s a lot of laugh out loud moments. And the romance and chemistry is really good. If the love triangle didn’t go on for so long I would have rated it higher. It’s still a great one to watch.
