While looking for the right words to comment on this dorama, I'm wondering whether I should copy&paste the review I wrote on another site for "Kanojotachi No Jidai" ("Scriptwriting 101: the ideal script should have great characters and a great plot; you can still write something nice with a weak (or even no) plot but at least great characters, and you can still come up with something watchable with weak characters but at least a great plot. But if you write something with no plot and dull characters, what you'll get in the end is just a waste of film. Uninspiring.") or if I'd rather take inspiration from what a fellow reviewer wrote on that very same site ("...I didn't really care for the characters, which is not a good thing for a character-based drama"). Or maybe I should be less lazy and, instead of copying&pasting something previously written, I should try writing something new? Then a possibility could be the "Christmas Present Metaphor": you know how some Christmas presents look so beautiful all wrapped up nicely and whatnot (just like the photography, editing and directing in this dorama) but when you finally unwrap and open them up you realize they may have looked beautiful from the outside, but actually there's just a totally plain, dull and uninspiring thing inside? I'll let you pick the approach that you'll find more appropriate. As for me, even taking into consideration the great performances by Tsumabuki Satoshi, Eita and Aoi Yu - BTW, what a waste of acting talent, casting them for this poor script! - and also the lovely opening credit song....still, I can't possibly give this waste of film anything higher than a 4/10. Boring, uninspiring and horribly, painstakingly, intolerably verbose!

Matsuoka Mayu is really beautiful and Itoh Sairi is seriously über-funny (so much so that after a coupla episodes I realized that I had ended up being a lot more attracted by her than by her colleague, LOL!), but this weird "mockumentary-behind-the-scenes-of-a-fake-tv-program-metatvdorama-whatchamacallit" is, well, pretty much a load of cr*p - pardon my French, but there's no better nor more honest way to put what I sincerely think of this dorama...^_^; p.s. nice opening&ending credits songs, though!

Shinohara Ryoko and Eguchi Ryosuke were both very good. Unfortunately, the dorama itself was horribly slow and I couldn't help feeling that it was unnecessarily dragged (and filled with useless side stories, subplots and minor characters) only in order to stretch into twelve episodes what would've worked much better as a movie or anyway as a much shorter drama. It's a pity, because the last episode was imho very good - but having to endure eleven, mostly boring episodes to get there, was pretty tiring!

There's an Italian idiom ("senza infamia e senza lode") which would apply perfectly to this dorama. In English it would mean, literally, "without infamy nor praise", and in a less literal and therefore better translation, it would sound as "not particularly worth of praise, nor of criticism". The dorama has its moments and the main actors (Kanno Miho, Amami Yuki, Tamaki Hiroshi, Koichi Mantaro and Miyoshi Ayaka) all deliver solid performances. Unfortunately, the script is a bit plain, so it ends up been watchable and even quite enjoyable, but at the same time not particularly remarkable.

One of the most original dorama I've ever seen (possibly, THE most original!), this lovely production shines thanks to a beautifully written script, to some enchanting characters, and to a superb performance by the whole cast! My personal top3: Nagase Tomoya, whose performance here could very well be his best ever; Yakushimaru Hiroko, whom - as cheesy as it may sound! - I'll always fondly remember as the okaa-san in "1 lt. No Namida"; Kutsuna Shiori...who's simply gorgeous, period...^_________^;

There were some good moments and a coupla good episodes, but that was it; imho this second season is much weaker than the first one (Toda Erika was soon replaced with Hasegawa Kyoko, and being a fan of the former, that also contributed to my disliking of this season, sorry...^__^;;;...); the humor bits, which had a big part in my liking of the previous season, were much less funny this time around (let's face it: you can only laugh that much about Yamamu's iron wig!) and the plots were mostly poorly written...

Having watched them almost one after the other, I couldn't help comparing this dorama to "Unfair" (particularly since they're both cop-shows with a female lead) and imho "Boss" wins hands down: not only is the main character much better (somebody with brains instead of a female "Dirty Harry"), but also the supporting cast is quite good, the plots make some sense and the constant humor makes it much more enjoyable (all this imho of course). I didn't have many expectations but I ended up unexpectedly liking it.

Being quite a big fan of Japanese mystery comics (Meitantei Conan) and novels (namely, Higashino!), I really enjoyed this anthology series! True, a coupla episodes are only so-and-so imho (#3,4,7), but several others are absolutely brilliant (#1,2,5,6,8,11), and the average quality is therefore pretty damn good imho. The frame story being played for a few seconds before and after each episode and reaching the climax at the end of the series is also enjoyable (making constant fun of mystery tropes in a very fast-paced and minimal way - kind of like a 4-koma manga, if you know what I mean - adds some nice comic relief). A well-deserved "8", as far as I'm concerned! ;)

Albeit as crazy and "shonenjumpesque" as they come, this dorama and its sequel do provide a few hours of evasion and entertainment. Morikawa Aoi is a perfect "tsundere" type and Hamabe Minami does also really well as the compulsive gambler - managing to be at the same time funny and scary when she goes "gamblerserk" and shouts/utters/whispers - depending on the episode - "Kakeguruimashou!". I might raise or lower the vote depending on how they wrap everything up in the subsequent movie (which I haven't watched yet), though...

Calm, relaxing, full of "mono no aware", it reminded me of two of my favorite manga, "Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou" and "Aqua/Aria". Unfortunately, I think that some characters aren't developed enough (Seitarou, Barbara, Danshaku) while others are, imho, absolutely useless (Morikage-san, most of all!). And that's the reason why it gets "only" a 9 instead of a 10. But it's still a very nice dorama, too bad it didn't get more episodes or a second season...this stationery store is a place one would love to visit time and again, just like "Café Alpha" or "Aria Company" ;)

This dorama gets a full 10/10 for its many merits (very interesting plot, beautiful message, great performances by the leads - Aoi Yu and Sakurai Sho - and by part of the supporting cast - most of all, Kazama Morio and Kinami Haruka - btw, too bad Morikawa Aoi's role is so small T__T) and despite its flaws (the naiveté of some details - active learning is indeed a great tool, but it's not so easy to implement it, particularly in a high school environment, as shown here; the ridiculously terrible performances given by Arakawa Yoshiyoshi - the guy can "play" only ONE character, and that's what he does *every single time* in *every single drama*...SO ANNOYING!!! - and by Takashima Masanobu - compared to him, even Dick Dastardly from "Wacky Races" was a credible, realistic and sober villain!!! >__<

Not all that glitters is gold...

...nor all that's brown and nicely confectioned is Swiss chocolate, if you know what I mean...^__^;;;

In other words, looks can be deceiving, as is certainly the case with this J-drama.
Waitaminute!
This *looks* like a J-drama at first sight, what with the all-Japanese cast (a star-studded cast, BTW - what a waste of talent, seriously! T___T) acting in Japanese, and the Japanese setting.
But don't be fooled.
This is pure Hollywood.
The filming, editing, music commentary...but most of all, the extremely poor writing, the tremendously obnoxious "dialogues" where 90% of the time you'll have stupid, immature characters trying hard to be "cool" (gosh, I *hate* that word!), the confusing and completely implausible plot, the silly ending...and then again, the *abnormous* amount of mindless violence and morbid attention to the most disturbing details, and all in all the utterly luciferian taste - or rather lack thereof.
Not a single character passed the good ole "Meteorite Test" (for those who don't know this old scriptwriting inside joke, let's recite it once again: "If all the characters were to be assembled inside a building in the middle of the desert, and a meteorite were to suddenly fall upon said building, thusly killing them all, would you feel sad for any of them?").
The only thing that could've saved this would've been if they had added a sorta "episode 10.5" where a "Deus Ex Machina" armed with a sledgehammer (half The Mighty Thor, half Ramon Mercader, LOL) suddenly appeared out of nowhere and started bashing all characters' heads in. Then broke the "fourth wall" and went on to administer the very same treatment to the series' writers and producers.

When news of Netflix arrival in Japan broke out, I remember photoshopping myself an image signature (which I've used for a while on another site) with "Zetsubou Sensei" from the eponymous manga shouting, as per his usual: "Zetsuboushita! Netflix no dorama no sei de zetsuboushita!".
Seems the Sensei was right in despairing.
It has been mostly a disgrace, indeed.

p.s.
Of course plenty of viewers, who enjoy Hollywoodian productions, will love this.
To each his own. Peace!

First things first: if I were to make an actual average of my ratings for the different categories, this drama would get an overall grade of 6/10...so why am I rating it a 1/10 instead? Very simply put, because, a) it was such a huge let down and b) it pissed me off so royally in the second half.
I have myself to blame for it though, as I started watching this "Hirowareta Otoko" without realizing that it's actually an AMERICAN-Japanese production - and indeed, after a few episodes consistent with a typical J-drama, the second half of the series is unfortunately filled with all the stuff that eventually led me to abandon American productions altogether eight years ago, after having watched them all my life. No offense meant, I'm sure most people would disagree and start the flag-waving, star-spangled cheers right away. This is just my personal opinion, so take it for what it is, and if you disagree, just ignore my rant. Thanks.
If you happen to agree with me on the disdain for hollywoodian crap, though, heed my warning and steer clear of this. Luckily for us there's plenty of Asian dramas still not affected by contemporary American "culture".
Nakano Taiga is such a great actor, and there are some wonderful actresses in the cast too (Ito Sairi, Yakushimaru Hitoko, Suzuki Anne, Kaho, Tanabe Momoko, Sato Megumi etc. etc.). The "behind the scenes" glimpse into a supporting actor's life is indeed a tremendously interesting premise. The "packaging" (direction, photography, editing, OST) is also top-notch.
But it all gets utterly ruined by the lousy propaganda it contains, sorry.
Just one example - take this dialogue between the ML and his brother:

"Why did you come to America?"
[...]
"World peace...different people getting along together...[...]...I thought I would find all that..."
"If that's the case, then you did find it."

...'cause yeah, America is so star-spangled awesome, right? >____<
Who in his right mind wouldn't want to go find "world peace" in a country that has been AT WAR for about 228 of the 246 years since its inception in 1776, right? Or to go find "different people getting along together" in a country where racism is literally *everywhere*?
Seriously...>_______<

p.s.
Again, pardon my rant. And please note that I have *nothing* against the American people. I know many, and the vast majority of them are good people. Just not a fan of the government, nor of the media, for the terribly evil effect they have on people both in and outside of the US. Peace!

A premise: I'm not a religious person per se (as in, I don't belong to any cult) but that doesn't mean I'm a non-spiritual, materialistic person; I usually define myself as an anti-Trotskyist Socialist and a Confucian, and as such, I recognize religion as an important aspect of human life (the only difference I make being between "positive" religions - as in, those encouraging a peaceful and harmonic coexistence within society - and "negative" ones - those doing just the opposite and creating instead a toxic social environment - but that's going too deeply into details...let's just say I respect religions and religious people, as a general rule).
So it was with some (heck, a LOT of) caution that I started watching this "Kaso Girei". The plot reeked of 21st Century hyper-materialism ("There's nothing other than money, so stop having spiritual thoughts and limit yourself to the only things that matter: produce-consume-rinse-and-repeat") but I had hopes that the producer being NHK would mean the topic would be treated intelligently. And for sure, I know that sects can be a problem in Japan, so I would've been fully ready to accept a non-shallow critical view on this matter.
Alas, it's not what this series' all about.
All in all, the final message of this drama appears to me to be "religious/spiritual people are all weirdoes/nutjobs", hence "stop having spiritual thoughts and limit yourself to produce-consume-rinse-and-repeat". Pure Hollywood.
Huge let down. 4/10

Message to the fellow j-drama fans out there: in case you're wondering whether you should watch this or not, let me just say that, upon doing so, what I'm actually wondering about is: "Why, oh why, have I wasted my time watching this?" ^__^; OK, yep, I've seen worse dramas, to be fair; and with this weak premise, it would have been very hard (or rather, basically impossible) to expect a masterpiece; hence I wasn't too drastic with my votes. Still, it doesn't reach the passing grade imho, sorry...
