Decent enough
The drama had a weak and uninteresting start but it managed to pick itself back up after some time. Some patients' stories didn't blend well with what was going on and it passed off as an interruption. It shares a lot of similarities with Jewel in the Palace (2003) but with a less attractive cast. Not only that but it also shares the same problems Jewel in the Palace (2003) had had. You may refer to my comment there. In comparison, I would nudge this one slightly higher since it had a more raw feeling to it. The drama also had a modern remake back in 2013. There was no specific fundamental issues with the base story to prompt a remake. There were too many identical copy-pasted scenes and jokes, they don't take any creative freedom with the core story/scenes to make the remake worthwhile. Although the remake is longer but this came at the expense of its pace since the extended content was poorly utilized and made it a worse experience overall. A lot of over exaggeration/dramatization and a lot less human. I hoped the remake would have a better written ending but no, it was identical frame by frame to the original. I prefer this version over the remake for its roughness, rawness and concise cut, it makes for a better watch.Vond je deze recentie nuttig?
acting wise, all actors did great. the love story between the two main leads were not fully developed, its acceptables since its not a love story but more on the struggle of hur jun becoming a doctor.
compare to jewel in the palace (which i rewatched 3times), i dont see myself rewatching this ever.
im planning to see the 2013 version as soon as i find a link for it.

Considering its age, I had no high expectations from this drama, but I was pleasantly surprised!
I wasn't expecting much from this drama, but it turned out to be better than I thought. It felt a bit outdated, but it was still a good discovery. The story progressed well, but it didn't have a compelling pull. The small amount of romance involving Lady Ye Jin could have been omitted. The quality of the storyline declined significantly in the last ten episodes. However, overall, it was still an enjoyable watch.Vond je deze recentie nuttig?

Review of Hur June
This show explored the theme of what it meant to be a doctor. Is it a doctor's job to seek fame, earn money or is it the job of doctor to care for his patient regardless of whether he gained anything from it? Hur June was a good doctor who did not care for fame or money but who cared only for his patients. He was not always like this, though. Initially, he was a hooligan who smuggled and broke the law because he found no meaning in his life. Gradually, he changed to be a doctor who cared for his patient more than he cared for even his own well-being.This show also explored the theme of what it meant to be the family of a poor doctor. The wife and mother and son of Hur June suffered often because Hur June was poor. They often did not have enough to eat and often had to suffer abuse from the rich because of their low status and poverty. Still, in spite of that they trusted in Hur Junr and willingly endured their sufferings because they believed in his cause.
This show explored the theme of standing up for oneself in the midst of class inequalities. Hur June began as a low status hooligan but chose to stand up for himself to progress through the social ladder and ended up an imperial doctor. He began low in status but eventually reached a high level of status, all the while keeping to his principles to be kind to the patients.
This show explored the theme of how a good person can transform the selfish people around him to be kinder. Iisuh koo initially was a cheat who cheated Hur June of his money but through his encounter with Hur June and getting to know Hur June, he became transformed and less selfish. He would at times even walked the extra mile for Hur June. Likewise, Weetae's selflessness when he took care of the patients impacted Hur June and transformed Hur June from a hooligan to a selfless doctor like Weetae.
One thing I like about this show is that it featured the triumph of good over evil. While Hur June might suffer initially because of his care for patients more than fame or wealth, he triumphed eventually over the more selfish doctors because his heart for those suffering was eventually appreciated by those around him. He also got to influence the selfish doctors and turned them from enemies to be his supporters. This is what I like most about the show. Everytime when Hur June triumphed over the evil forces around him, I felt good. I kept watching the scene when his sacrifice was appreciated by those around him.
Overall, I enjoyed this show very much.
