Political storyline is well developed. But it dragged on when plots were recycled. It gets tiring as making you want to quit watching it but I stay dedicated to get it over and done with. The characters in here are not singled out, only when unnecessary to the plot. Some character developments were actually impressive to watch. Overall I would give this a 8.5/10. Be ready to skip some scenes for they might annoy you with repeated drama. You might just end up watching the entire series within two days.

I watched so may times, and got so many others to watch this show.
Highly recommend!!!

STORY:

2 kingdoms hate each other, one got taking over, girl(XinEr) try to get revenge. Took the place of a minister bastard daughter(WeiYoung). Fell in love with enemy’s grandson(Jun).
Im about to call XinEr as WeiYoung now bc she took WeiYoung’s place.
The minister highest wife and kids(WeiYoung half siblings) try to make WeiYoung look guilt for everything and framing her which doesn’t work out. They are doing this because they want the daughter (ChangLe) to marry Jun, but Jun is in love with WeiYoung.
WeiYoung solve many of the enemy’s kingdom issues. And gain higher positions.
As more people see WeiYoung’s beauty and intelligent, more men started to like her, including BaYu, the enemy’s son.
WeiYoung and ChangRu(WeiYoung’s other half sister) were very close. When BaYu started to show interest in WeiYoung, ChangRu got jealous as she had a crush on him since both were kids.
BaYu like WeiYoung but also want her because some many people like and trust her, and marrying her will raise he’s likelihood to be emperor.
Many people died.
In the end, WeiYoung and Jun where together.
_____
WeiYoung is smart, strong, independent, and power women, that played a huge role.
ChangRu was annoying.

ACTING/CASTING:

It was smart that they casted Tiffany Tang and Luo Jin together as they have worked together in other dramas and they are a couple.

MUSIC:

All in my playlist so that tell you I like it.

REWATCH VALUE:

100% yes. I rewatch this drama every few months!

Emotional Experience

My friend actually suggested Princess Weiyoung to me and I wasn't sure if i was gonna like it, but I'm glad i got to finish it. It was really an emotional experience. If i were to rewatch, i probably would in a couple of months. Overall i really liked it but it was also very heart breaking. If you have time or you have nothing to watch i would really recommend watching Princess Weiyoung.
After I starting watching the 1st episode of Princess Weiyoung I wasn't really into it but I decided why not and finish the show. So as I watched i starting being more focused on watching then doing other things. I managed to finish the show in 5 days. (thats when you know i was really focused on watching)
Overall I recommend!

To be honest, I'm not that into "chinese dramas" specially Historical ones, mostly because they are so long and probably because I'm more used to korean dramas. BUT after the "unfinished" feelings that Scarlet Heart Ryeo left me, i decided to give PWY a try because it was on the top of the most watched dramas, and i'm grateful that i did. It may sound absurd for Scarlet Heart Ryeo fans, but both have similarities. Such as Princes falling in love with the main lead, evil second female lead that is in love with the male lead and wants power more than anything.
Besides that, the story in PWY is completely different from Scarlet Heart Ryeo. This drama is all about revenge and love, love that conquers all, a tragic but beautiful love story.
Regarding the acting, both leads have amazing chemistry (It's good to know that they're dating) .
I'm now a fan of Tifanny Tang, I will look forward to see her in more dramas. She's amazing. The others actors did a good job too.
If you're looking for a historical drama that has action, suspense, drama and romance, PWY is the one for you. If you're unsure if you should watch or not because you're reading comments, please don't. Don't let you're decision depend on someone else, if you want to watch, watch it don't be afraid. It's good to take risks sometimes.

Soo...this drama is pretty epic. The beginning of this show moves fast unlike most Chinese dramas I’ve watched. I’ve never been able to commit to a historical drama. This show is great because it so effectively turns the tables on the bad guys. The highlight for me is that the coincidences make sense. They seem real and not just a plot device. I think the writers did a great job interweaving tropes with the storyline. I’m glad there was more to this show than just revenge and the revenge business seems to get done quite quickly and efficiently.
A common theme is that despite the stiffness and coldness of the characters when they find someone that they are comfortable with they act quite silly and I found it very cute.

Plot-wise, the start of the drama is heavy with conflict and twists and turns. I thought we would be in for more of that as the story went on, but the big guns of trouble that were brewing on the horizon ended up to be nothing. I’m glad that it wasn’t all heavy going all the way.
Towards the end anything that happens results in Wei Young being accused and dragged before the court – it seriously got so repetitive that I just had to laugh.

I’m not one to notice fancy scenery and filming but this show is really such a nice thing to look at. It makes mundane moments tantalising. I usually struggle to connect with Chinese over the top filming, but this show really captured some amazing shots and feelings with their thoughtful production and directing.

Servants
I was impressed with the servant’s immediate loyalty and sense of duty.

Heroine
Our heroine is indeed quick witted. The reviews did not overestimate her. She knows how to get her way very nicely amidst the bad guys wielding their power.
I appreciated her familiar way of treating those who favoured her. She teased them and fooled around with them all the time.

Tuoba Jun

“Destiny? I only believe in a man’s will.”

Sometimes Tuoba Jun says the right thing with the right smirk.

“How can there be disappointment when there was no hope to begin with?”

This actor is probably one of the few that looks better in historical Chinese hairstyle than a modern one.

Prince of Nan-An
This guy does not make good first impressions. But as the story goes on, I quite liked his subtle machinations and the way he played the others. The actor has a good way of playing his character to stand out yet be very secretive too. He has a number of lines that are really meaningful and his delivery is very nuanced. As it goes along, he becomes a standard villain type, but he had some really great moments earleir on.

Secondary Romances
Li Min De and Tuoba Di are very skippable initially – but as they go on, I appreciate their mature take on love. They are both emotionally impressive and sacrificing for the sake of their respective unrequited loves.

“We are both so silly.”

Jun Tao and Cheng De were mostly slapstick.

“You’re womanly. Very womanly.”

Korean vs. Chinese Drama

The make up on the Chinese actors as well as their hair is so caked on it seems fake and it really annoys me.
Romance. I have found that Chinese dramas like to have an extended rocky/cold relationship and then when it’s solid it’s so picture perfect solid it seems unrealistic.

I appreciated how they kept coming back to the zither as a focal point of their romance. As a musician I found it very touching indeed.

I really like this drama because of the overall flow of the story is smooth and precised. The main male n female lead really good in term of acting and played so well and naturally. Tuoba jun's love toward wei yang has never been influenced and discounted even having many twists and turns between them and i like this kind you romance story. The pace of the story really well plot , smooth, exciting and keeping you in mood to chase the following episodes till the end. The romance between weiyang and tuoba jun just so lovely, sweet and natural. Besides, the ninth princess is another actress that surprised me and can really played so well. She is really cute and lovely in the drama.
There was one thing not convinced me that the enemy keep using the same face mask plot to disguise ppl appearance and repeating the same tactic many times by che yun jun and yet nobody discover that made me a bit frustrated.
Music and songs are good .
The costumes of this drama are well done.

Couldn’t stop watching

I really had no idea what to expect with this drama..I had watched and enjoyed a few C-dramas but I was never as engrossed in one as I was with this.
It does have some shamelessly romantic fluff in there (like way to give me unrealistic expectations for men) and While I wouldn’t call this a masterpiece or the best drama writing wise, I just couldn’t help but be addicted and drawn into it.

My biggest complaint (and in the grand scheme it’s a small one) was just how cartoony the action is...I’m not even kidding everyone moves like a freaking airbender, and it’s ridiculous...I almost stopped watching the first episode from it..glad I waited and didn’t judge the overall quality based on the action scenes.
Also..I didn’t exactly get bored, but things got a little repetitive with the main character constantly getting framed and having to prove herself innocent.

Now, back to the good.
The costumes are nothing short of gorgeous...The main leads have incredible chemistry and I honestly believe that’s why this drama works so well..there’s many other very likable characters and even a twist villain I wouldn’t have expected.

Definitely give this drama a shot. I’m not saying it’s perfect, but I think it’s worth your time.

Power-struggle, romance and jealousy

This drama will capture your attention within a short time into the first episode. The usual hygiene factors rolled in: handsome actors, beautiful actresses, good acting skills, great on-screen chemistry between the leads, exciting story, lovely cinematography and lovely ending theme song. I certainly put it among the top dramas I had watched.

54 episodes is a good length for this story – sufficient to cover the story in sufficient depth with only a few lull moments. I had seen worse ones with draggy time-fillers.

Tiffany Tang and Luo Jin had this amazing chemistry and on checking the Internet they were married in 2018, no doubt falling in love while acting together in the numerous dramas they shared.

In this story, there were two classes of villains – the totally evil like the ChiYun family and the deceptive third sister whom you would hate throughout the drama, and those who showed a bit of conscience like the Tuoba Yu whom I empathised with at moments.

Storyline was quite sensible and realistic – no far-fetched scenes, at least none of those magical cure by internal energy transfer kind of crap, although there was a couple flying scenes in the first episode but the 'flyer' was aided by someone. These are interesting in fantasy dramas but spoil a period drama.

There were a few lovely music pieces like the ending theme song but the melody in the opening theme song is a little lacklustre.

However I must say a lot of similar themes were repeated over and over in Chinese dramas and in this – heros/heroines got framed again and again, disguise was so good they fooled everyone – wonder why no one picked up the difference in the voice, the villains were always lucky in their evil ways, and of course revenge which is a beaten to death theme in Chinese drama. If a couple of the framing scenarios were removed and the drama was shortened, it could work better.

I have a bit of a spoiler here – it had a sad ending although I cannot say it is a tragedy. The prelude of each episode gave away too much of how the story concluded although not the entire final ending.

strong female lead

It didn't feel like 54 episodes to me. I typically don't have the patience for long dramas, but this one hit different. I adore the chemistry between the two leads. They did well with acting out the romantic scenes. Despite the romance involved, the title, The Princess Wei Young, and the plot proves that this is all about Wei Young.

I enjoyed following Wei Young's journey. She has a different demeanor compared to the typical romance-related dramas that I usually go for. But I'm saying it as a good thing because it's nice seeing a strong female lead who isn't ditsy. The plot was well-thought out enough that it kept me watching until the end.

The ost is everything; I recommend you listening to it separate from the drama because it lets you appreciate it in its entirety. I also cried a lot and there are 54 whole episodes so get that tissue box and put it next to you lol.

loved it - as usual have some nitpicks - but loved it

Sure I have nitpicks with this, but when I watch a series and start writing fanfic in my head, it's a sign that I liked it a lot.

So glad this came out 4 years ago - it's very bingeable; in fact, took me about 4 days to get through all the episodes. I didn't skip any episodes - something rare for me - but this series does need a judicious application of the fast-forward button (icon? I guess it's an icon nowadays. Sorry, am old).

First let's start with the spoilers: no, I don't mean MY spoilers, those will come later. I mean the fact that the opening and closing credits (5 minutes in all) spoil the entirety of the ending. Like, all of it. WHY. Why do they do this?
If I see the title character wearing a fancy Empress headdress in the opening credits, I KNOW she's not gonna die in episode whatever. And if in the closing credits I see a little boy walking by her side in a tiny, tiny Emperor's outfit, complete with fancy jewel curtain crown, I KNOW that her true love isn't gonna live long (yes, some Emperors abdicated in favour of an heir, but not if that heir was a child).

For those of us who need English subtitles, I advise watching it on Viki. The subs there are miles better than the ones on youtube - I watched on YT up to episode 37/38 (I think) - in the following episode, the subs were mostly messed up and out of sync and stopped halfway.

Now, the spoilers:
Re. the show itself - I really enjoyed it. I liked the main character, even though I found her kind of annoying in the first episode. But then, through adversity, her character really shone through. Yes, her suffering bordered on torture porn in later episodes, and it was overdone. But it usually is in shows of this type, and I never stopped empathizing with her.
I liked all the main guys - I don't know if I had a favourite, though usually it would have been Touba Jun. But when I saw the closing credits and came here to spoil myself, I decided I wasn't going to get attached! Touba Yu was an interesting example of villain who was more of an antihero - towards the end he became really over-the-top, though his death was nicely understated. I liked how even at the end he didn't give ChangRu what she wanted - GOOD. Eat a dick, ChangRu.
Chiyun Nan made me lament that they choose the hottest guys to be the worst sociopathic villains - he ticks all the boxes for me, and then I realise in the first episode that he's a monster. Why, guys.

I found the whole marriage alliance plot to be really interesting, and gave me even more reasons to dislike the fathers on the show - specifically, Prime Minister Li, the Emperor, and even the Rouran Khan.

Like, at first the Emperor is like - sure, the woman we send to Song is gonna die, deffo. So, we can send your daughter, right, Minister Li?
Minister Li - Please, please take her.
Li Weyuong - My dearest love, I will love you forever. Forget about me. If I get raped on the way, I'll kill myself. BYEEEE.

I mean, WTF. And then, what she said actually happened! That was the plan all along! The Song people planned to rape and murder her before she even got to their country, and make it look like it was done by their own people, which is super-fucked up (also, makes me realise why with European royalty, they started insisting on marriages by proxy in the princess's own country - that way, she was already the Consort, and anyone who laid a hand on her would die horribly).

So, ok, fine. The Emperor knew about this likelihood, or that they'd kill Weiyoung as soon as they attacked, and so didn't want to send his own, still very babyish, daughter. But then he agrees to send Touba Di to Rouran??? To marry a man his age or older?? And maybe get raped and killed on the way??

The Khan of Rouran is another monstrous dad. He sends Anle off into the unknown, while also planning to invade. But what's even worse is what he does to Li MinDe - at first it's all: my first-born son, come back to us, yada yada. Then, when we find out what's become of him, it's clear that the intention was simply to use Li Minde to spy, steal a map etc, so they could attack. He literally didn't care about his son at all - instead of arranging a marriage for his son, he arranges one for himself! With a teenage girl whose attitude and behaviour is so childlike the thing borders on child abuse.

If I have something to complain about and agree with other complaints: yes, the ending is kind of a mess. Maybe it's based on the novel, maybe it isn't, but as a lot of things were changed anyway, why not change the Touba Jun ending ? It's a massive plot hole , to me, that all top doctors in Northern Wei, working for 5 years (or so) around the clock, could not replicate an antidote which had been put together by a power-hungry General (Chiyun Nan, you were a total smokeshow, but never struck me as the brightest bulb in the box).

The whole poison thing just bugged me. And why would you have only one antidote but two poisons. Just, whatever.

Still, its fun and enjoyable, has a host of interesting characters, and some episodes can be watched on 1.5 speed.

Loved it!

Wei Young was my first historical C-drama and the longest drama I watched at the time. I took a break from it at about episode 30 because my studies kept me busy but besides that, I binge-watched through it. I especially enjoyed the first half of the drama because I was immediately captivated by the 'hidden identity/revenge' kind of plot.

Despite the number of episodes, the drama didn't feel slow because Wei Young was a clever female lead who quickly saw through the antagonists' intrigues and took interesting actions. I think, what kept her from being an overpowered character was the one dilemma she couldn't resolve (I'm not going to go more into detail in order to avoid spoilers). As she already started out as a smart, competent character, there wasn't much room for "character development" but I didn't have a problem with that. I personally prefer a female lead who's badass from the beginning over a FL who's forced to act like an idiot for the first 20 episodes, just for the sake of character development. You could say that instead from within, Wei Young's character development could rather be found in the different social ranks she took throughout the drama, so it was still interesting to watch her growth and she definitely becomes even more of a badass in the end.

I really liked the male antagonists because they weren't purely evil; their actions were (at least to some extent) understandable. On the other hand, the female antagonists were quite bland and clichéd, their only motive being jealousy. But this is more or less the only thing I didn't like about this drama.

Overall, I dearly recommend this drama to anyone who wants to get into historical C-dramas or who's already familiar with them.
