A paradise of sweets but also much more...
At the risk of sounding overly enthusiastic, it perplexes me that more people do not understand the brilliance of Saboriman Kantarou. On the surface, Kantarou seems to be just another late-night, food-focused Japanese drama. But it is very apparent from the first episode that it is much more than the sum of its parts.Beautifully shot, well-written, and absurdly hilarious, Saboriman Kantarou does everything in its own, unique way. You can't help but feel the same infectious fervor that the titular Kantarou has for anything and everything dessert or sweets-related. His antics only get more and more crazy in the search for the best sweets in Tokyo as he does his best to hide the true nature of his secret, dessert-filled escapades during working hours. It all seems like it might be a bit over-the-top — and it is! — but the genius of Saboriman Kantarou is that it manages to capture all of this in a way that is still very engaging and has you wanting more.
It is hard to understand how it does all of this merely by speaking about the show without spoiling some of the best parts. My only suggestion is that you give Saboriman Kantarou an honest try as I feel you will be rewarded with a very sweet experience.

The drama is not really a drama, but more like an ad and documentary tour for sweets in Tokyo.
I watched it, because it is on Netflix and the eps are just 24 mins. So it was convenient watching it on the train, while going to work. Kantaro’s expressions at some point were hilarious. I couldn’t take myself from smiling at some scenes. And to be honest I skipped most of the sweet heaven scenes.
Before starting to watch this make sure you don’t have any high expectations.

a sweet story on the passion of a working man
Quick warning- don't watch this while you are hungry, or you might end up eating sandwiches or random items at 3 am like i did. Now, this is a show that is a delight to watch for those who appreciate food, like quirky shows, or just want to watch something refreshing.Kantaro is a working man whose passion and driving force is sweets- something you don't see often in shows, especially since liking sweets is seen to be feminine. I, for one, liked this show because I found it funny and I love sweets as well. The way he enjoys sweets may seem extra at times but I must say I do understand and relate to it. The show itself is uplifting as well, as the sight of Kantoro enjoying his day due to the sweet makes me believe that I too can fix my day with a little treat!
If you aren't the slightest bit interested in food and its makings, I wouldn't suggest watching this- as a large part of the show is just Kantaro dissecting each aspect of a dish.

Each episode of this drama introduces a new (sometimes, multiple) sweets ships in the Tokyo area that the main character skips work to visit. While it's obvious that the storyline was built around his skipping work to eat sweets, having a storyline helps this not feel like a travel show, but rather, something entertaining that also introduces new dessert spots. The storyline is a little weak, but I've seen worse.
I made a google maps list of all of the dessert shops in this drama, and I plan on visiting as many as I can when I'm interning in Tokyo this summer.
This drama will renew your love for desserts and give you a few chuckles at not being as obsessed with desserts as Kantarou is.
