A story that may check the cliche boxes but stands up n shines on its own by being very grounded, relatable and eveb sensible unlike many of its peers. One may be tempted to include it in your usual romcoms and sometimes rather frivolous plots of youthul romantic C dramas. I was pleasantly suprise by how well written the characters are. And its focused on sinplicity of a relationship despite cohabilitation, contract aggrements hijinks.
Male character isnt a typical tsundere. He doesnt mingle much but isnt a complete recluse. He has his principles in life and is focused and perhaps a little rigid at first. Yet when taught and exposed to things he is perceptive and willing to learn and see things in different perspective. Even as it dawns to him Bei Er Duo draws him in and first time in his life another human being's emotions coiud affect his, hes mature in dealing with his burgeoning feelings. That's such a breath of fresh air in a male lead character..who is perceptive, observant, and helps out the female lead in meaningful ways.
Bei Er Duo is equally well written because they dont dump down her character. She may hav financial difficulties or difficult mother but she doesnt whine, begrudge ohers or dwell on the negatives. Instead shes hardworking and persistently strives to fulfil her dream. Her mostly cheerful demeanor puts you in good spirits everytime shes on screen.
Although the intial set up was typical.. the subsequent interactions felt very natural. The pace and flow was nice and did not felt forced. The leads communication and sharing of thoughts and dreams were also highlights that i enjoy.
Although im not that critical of my rom coms..i want to state that theres alot out there full of fluff, sometimes too cheesy or not believable. This drama was sweet in a palatable and soothing way. Even the second leads were good.
I felt this drama warrants more viewers. Do give it a try

*Spoilers are only in the last paragraph, regarding the ending*

I enjoyed I Hear You up until episode 17, as a lighthearted drama without any elements that made me angry or annoyed (which feels pretty rare with Chinese modern dramas). I personally enjoy the 'pretend couple becomes real' trope. From episode 17 onward, I felt like the plot lost momentum and then finally, several elements of the final two episodes really bothered me.

Ye Shu Wei (Riley Wang) is a successful and talented violin maker who doesn't like other people, and he grows a lot throughout the show as he begins to care about Bei Er Duo (Zhao Lusi). Bei Er Duo is kind and determined; she has a dream of becoming a voice actress and her goal is to study abroad in Japan. I loved that she was always studying, working hard to improve herself, and wanted to rely on her talent not connections. Ye Shu Wei and Bei Er Duo slowly grow to care for each other, and since they are both inexperienced in love, they feel like an even-leveled match despite him being rich and successful. But to be honest, their relationship is pretty boring. There were some cute moments and some cringey moments but nothing memorable. I actually felt like Shu Wei put much more effort and heart into their relationship, in trying to understand her, encourage her, and prepare surprises for her. (But Riley Wang's stony-faced acting bored me.)

Shu Wei and Er Duo agreeing to be on a couples competition show seemed like a far-fetched premise but the characters Yu Sheng and Tang Li help make it a little believable since they are the producers(?) for the show. Tang Li's character arc is fantastic and is the one great thing in this show. I loved that she faced her feelings head on, stuck to her principles, and worked hard to find her own happiness. Her storyline wasn't what I expected, but she articulated it well when she explained her decisions to Er Duo. The maturity of her character was such a sharp contrast to Er Duo's childish behavior.

*SPOILERS BELOW*
As for the last two episodes... I hated the two phone calls that Er Duo receives. Why did other people feel like they had the right to blame Er Duo for Shu Wei's choices? I liked that Er Duo sat down with him at the beach and talked about it honestly but why did Shu Wei not respond? Even though Er Duo returned the ring, it felt so inconclusive. (Also, if he really wanted to give up violin making/didn't care about that major violin order, I can respect his choice.) The last straw for me was how Er Duo chose to separate from Shu Wei. They had checked in their luggage and he was being paged for the flight so it just made no sense on so many levels. At the very least she could have sent him a text message after clearing security. The last scene was so strange and inconclusive. I wish that instead she had said at the beach, hey don't come to Japan with me, don't give up your work and let's date long distance for now and see how it goes...

Completed - 2/20/2022

I was in the mood for a fluffy rom-com after a couple of more serious dramas, and came across “I Hear You”. It’s one of the older rom-com starring Zhou Lu Si and Riley Wang and the plot looks promising. It has two of my favorite tropes - pretend/contract relationships & enemies-to-lovers. The expectations are low due to the comments and reviews that I read. And because of that, and also knowing what I am getting myself into, I actually quite enjoyed the drama….except maybe a couple illogical scenarios and the last episode.

Characters - Riley Wang plays the typical cliché cold/stoic character. Zhao Lu Si is the more optimistic but thank goodness, not super bubbly nor naïve female lead Bei Er Duo. What a fun name! Er Duo = Ear. I would say Riley’s portrayal is not very convincing and comes off as a little too emotionless. I like him a lot more as the second lead in “Attention, Love” and “Love is Sweet”. Zhao Lu Si is Zhao Lu Si. This is the type of role that’s made for her and she plays it well. Their chemistry is just OK to me. I think our secondary leads, Yuan Hao (as Yu Sheng) and Gratitude Dai (as Tang Li) have much better chemistry together. I would say the acting in general is fine in this drama. No one is horrible but no one is great either. One good thing about this drama is that I don’t find any character especially annoying. Also, for once there’s a foreign character that speaks believable English and Chinese. He’s actually very likable! How rare is that??

Main Romance - I do quite enjoy the development of both romances. It did take a very long time for the leads to develop from enemies to lovers. This is definitely a slow burn romance and it’s done quite well. There is enough going on with the dating show to provide entertainment for most of the drama. I do wish that the leads would have gotten together maybe an episode or two sooner, leave us some time with a couple episodes of plain cute, fluffy romance. We have waited a long time and we want that! There are complaints about the last episode and I agree. I would have liked to see most of what happened in ep 24 to be in ep 23. Save the last episode for when they are pursuing their dreams and end on a high and sugary note. Without going into spoiler mode, the last episode really could use some work. There are a few illogical decisions that happened and didn't give viewers a well-written ending they deserve.

Secondary Romance - This romance is a lot more mature than the sweet, innocent first love that our main leads have. It’s a nice contrast. We have two working professionals, being partners for a long time. They know each other well and got very used to each other. However, without a real confession, one could never know if it’s all wishful thinking. I really like Tang Li as the second female lead. I emphasize her internal struggle and applaud her courage to speak up and set the record straight. She made a painful but necessary and right choice. The back hug scene is sad but provides closure.

I have no experience with violin playing and making or the dubbing industry. So I am not going to comment on how accurate the drama depicts both industries. They seem ok to me but I am sure someone is fuming while watching this drama. LOL.

Other Observations:
1. Everyone looks so good after waking up, being drunk and after surgery. Hair and makeup are perfect! Actually, they look perfect all the time.
2. Riley Wang looks horrible in those historical costumes! He’s so handsome in his modern looks.
3. I’ve never seen Zhao Lu Si look so horrible in any historical dramas, but here with the first outfit. How can you give her such a bad wig?
4. How does FL turn on ML’s laptop without his password? Oh, and privacy issues? But we need her to do that to move the plot along.

Beautiful actors, but...

For me, this was a long drama with not a lot going on. There is slow in order to build a story, and then there is slow to draw out the episodes. I felt that this definitely fell in the latter category.

Riley Wang as Shu Wei - man, is he ever fine! And those dimples! But, I'm sorry to say, his acting really leaves something to be desired. His movements are wooden and he has basically one expression - he's supposed to be brilliant and anti-social, but to me he just always looked mad. When he was supposed to turn to look at the female lead, it often looked like his neck had some kind of ratchet-gear to make his head turn...turn a little stop, turn a little stop, etc.

Rosy Zhao as Er Duo - I love this actress. She was brilliant in Dating in the Kitchen, and here she has somewhat the same cute, innocent vibe going on, but I got so tired of everyone dumping on her all the time. She was always in trouble with someone.

Chemistry: Seriously lacking. Open-eyed fish kisses, then multiple times that she is trying to keep him from kissing her, like she's scared to death. It's so unrealistic in this day and age. And then they admitted their feelings for one another and I really didn't care.

Second lead couple - they were a big old mess and it was as if the writers had no idea what to do with them. And what they ultimately decided to do made no sense.

Ending - obligatory separation/time jump - stupid, as usual, but since I didn't buy them as a couple it didn't really matter anyway. The ending was very abrupt.

Modern Chinese dramas are becoming better written. Historical and fantasy Cdramas have, for the most part, been pretty good but modern ones, in the past, were lacking in story plot and character development. This drama is on par with LoveO2O and Go Go Squid! It seems that the writers have been watching Kdramas to get some pointers on how to create a better view able drama. This is an easy to watch drama that has the typical drama elements.
• Love triangle/square
• Rich boy/poor girl
• One female who is delusional about her relationship with the ML
• One parent who is against the relationship
• One dead/dying parent/parental figure
• Contract relationship
• Piggyback rides
• Some kind of injury that involves a hospital where everyone meets with the patient
• Some kind of minor injury, usually small cut on a finger, where the medical kit comes out
• Car crash that affects the leads
• At least one of the leads is drunk and has to be taken care of
• Usually the ML is sick, but not hospital sick and the FL serves them porridge
• One kissing/sexual overture scene where the leads are not on the same page
• Cooking/dishwashing scene that involves back hugging
• Falling asleep together, usually a couch, and one is awake touching/kissing the others face
• Phone dying while in the car (the car charger technology seems to be lacking in these dramas)
• Beach scene

But some typical elements were missing
• Second lead syndrome
• Major villain
• Cliffhangers/major climaxes (ep 24 does have a little one with the ring)
• Eating ramen together (I may have missed it if it did happen)

This is a very good drama with a nice romantic story. “I Hear You” is more about the male lead’s ability to understand his beloved despite his quiet and seemingly cold demeanor. The drama uses the circumstantial cohabitation as a premise to have the lead couple to get to know each other and eventually fall in love. The supporting cast is excellent, especially Bei Er Duo ‘s best friend Tang Li (Gratitude Dai) who had the best character development in the drama. There is great chemistry among the cast and the leading couple manage to increasingly sustain their great chemistry all the way until the end of the drama. **SPOILER ALERT** The drama was really good, but it could have been better if not for the unnecessary “separation to reach our goals” theme on the last episode; but at least time flew by in matters of minutes and the male lead resolved everyone else’s problems before going to Japan and appearing in front of his REAL dream, (Bei Er Duo), at the last moment ending the drama with a sweet embrace.

This show is pretty good, it's truly not a terrible show, but it's literally your average rich man/poor woman type of show. At times, I feel like the romance was like a back burner thing because it's so slow burning it's like they forgot about it until the very last few episodes. I watched it mainly for Riley Wang and I'm not even a huge fan but he did a good job and Zhao Lu Si. They were honestly so cute together and their romance and chemistry was just a fantastic mixture. It starts off kind of confusing and a lot happens so it's like "what's going on?" a lot and also the side characters; HELLO, WHY YOU GOTTA PLAY ME LIKE THAT??? LIKE HOW CAN YOU DO THAT BRUH? I WAS ROOTING! For those of you that know, you know. But the families were sweet, the friends, there was just odd things going on here and there that made it a little funky but the show overall was good and cute, it sure did have a lot going on though for something that wasn't very long in my opinion; all in all, a good watch. Definitely a filler kind of drama for sure.

Boring, dry, forgettable, skippable

I dropped the end on this one cause there was bearly any romance, the couple is a bit dry and boring and the wrap up was just uninspired. The ml has different standards for how he can interact with someone who likes him and how his love interest should. I understand jealousy but he has a whole other woman living in his house and is upset at her giving her friend some notes. That left a bad taste in my mouth, cause it was never discussed and she was explaining herself to him when I don’t think she really did anything. I held on much longer than I should have because I was hoping it would pick up. Suddenly I found myself giving up on the beach scene, that was my last straw. I suppose there are some cute moments here and there but honestly I took weeks to watch this cause it’s so very forgettable, it kept getting lost in my rotation.

what I love is that there’s no crazy scheming or overbearing parent drama, well not of the normal variety, her mom is … interesting. Also it was pretty cool that 2fl packed it up and moved on. I really didn’t expect that. In fact I’ve never seen that in a cdrama and I was fully expecting her old flame to get her back somehow. I can’t think of a single drama where the woman said bye and stood on it. Shocked and in awe. It was a nice change of pace.

what I don’t like him moving another woman into his house for a flimsy reason, the dry interactions between the mains, the wordless beach proposal and her thanking him for saying nothing and just putting on their ring. To each their own, I like a bit of communication.

Overall, very skipable, very forgettable (I’ve already forgotten the beginning tbh). I can’t imagine this is the same fl from hidden love.

Sweet romance

I started this drama expecting the typical cliche you would see with a contract relationship where there's the evil character that exposes everything ect... But to my surprise even though this drama had a lot of cliches they all had their own uniqueness that made them different from other dramas.

The male lead wasn't your typical tsundere, I liked how he only looked at her and was cold to the other girls that approached him, he also set the boundaries with them even before they had a chance to do anything.

The female lead although she had her situations she never gave up on her dream nor did she depend on the male lead.

The drama didn't have over the top evil characters... I don't think there was even an evil character in this drama. His parents accepted her something you don't see often when the male leads parents are rich.
I loved that they trusted each other and communicated throughout their relationship. Its a slow burn romance but seeing the slow development of their romance is worth the slow burn.

⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️SPOILER⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️

The ending although it was rather abrupt I would of liked to see more of their relationship after they reunited in japan.

Now the only thing I probably disliked was how the relationship between Lizi and Mr. Yu ended. The whole relationship with mars especially the wedding felt rather rushed, even more so if you think about the fact that she was head over heels for Mr. Yu.

I honestly can't wait and hope they make a season 2 soon.
