very interesting interactions

at the beginning—the story line was a little bit slow to capture audience’s full attention but after 3-4 episodes then the story flows better and more interesting interactions between the main couples light up audiences interests …now i wish to see all episodes since the story gets more and more interesting…

The magic of crab roe rice turns enemies to lovers

An enemy to lovers trope which I am a total sucker for. The way the story began for this drama totally caught me on a hook. A once powerful bandit, "Lu Wen" known for cleverness, skills and scheming falls in the hands of the one and only persistent, cunning and strong "Lord Huai Yang", who turns out to be even more scheming. He planned a fake marriage scheme without knowing that the fake wife whom he thought was one of Lu Wen's dear concubine is actually his mortal enemy whom he had spent all his time chasing. This was how interesting the beginning of the drama was that I couldn't stop watching it.

It took quite a lot of time before "Lu Wen" aka Liu Mian Tang was actually able to regain her full memories. During the time she spent together with Lord Huai Yang disguised as her fake husband "Cui Jiu", little did they both know that they were slowly falling in love with each other amidst the lies. There is quite a lot to say about Liu Mian Tang's character, when she lost all her memories, she was a remarkable wife to Cui Jiu, she remained faithful to him despite knowing his so-called short comings as a husband, she was very good at doing business and was so clever that she could make a life of her own to feed her family. In short, she kind of stood as a bread winner. I admire her good qualities as a wife to Cui Jiu. Certainly, this was one of the many reasons why Lord Huai Yang was deeply charmed by her, simply because of her personality. Then, when she finally regained all her memories as Lu Wen, there was a quick but very evident shift in her character. We were shown how truly clever and skilled she is.

Cui Jiu or Lord Huai Yang on the other hand, was a character that set the standard. Regardless of his lies and schemes. As the storyline progressed, we were able to be shown a softer and comedic side of him compared to his usual strong upfront. However, what remarkably caught most viewers attention, even mine, was his extreme cleverness. Especially with how he dealt with things at court and between the two lords (forgot their names lol) while at the same time chasing after Liu Mian Tang after their fake marriage had ended. By the time the two of them had finally let their strong feelings for each other break free, with Lord Huai Yang's persistence and consistent 'chasing' after Liu Mian Tang, we were finally given the powerful couple who complimented each other so well. An addition to that would be their lovey-dovey scenes.

This is where I would have to give the drama an 8.5 instead of a solid 10. Somehow for me, the storyline became a bit bland during the second half and mostly towards the end. I did enjoy the first half so much and I am glad that they focused on their romantic scenes, but the second half of the storyline underdelivered for me. I find the villain Prince Sui to be completely weak and nothing but a fool. The other so-called 'chief instructor' didn't do much to help make it look like they were really against a strong and cunning opponent. It would have been much nicer if the 'villain' was at par with our beloved powerful couple. The ending of the villain dissatisfied me and all it took was his own mother 'empress dowager' for him to fall from his high horse. I do get that it was also all thanks to Liu Mian Tang and Lord Huai Yang's genius masterplan, but I wished they showed us more of them and their fight scenes. Honestly, that fight scene at the last episode when they were breaking out of prison was the best scene for the second half of the drama, apart from their adorable and well-detailed wedding.

I also had this thought, maybe if the director was going to focus on their romance, wouldn't it had been better if they started the drama by showing us more of Lu Wen and Lord Huai Yang fighting against each other then inserting their fake marriage and then them falling in love. If they did such, Lu Wen's character would be less vague and have much more dimension. It would have been much more interesting if we got to explore more about their past together when they were enemies. Regardless, I still enjoyed this drama because of the actors. Wang Churan truly suited her character as Liu Mian Tang and Lu Wen, she is a beautiful actress and would love to see her in more baddass roles like Lu Wen, as it suited her so much. Zhang Wan Yi's portrayal of Lord Huai Yang, Cui Jiu and Cui Xing Zhou on the other hand, with his comedic facial expression, strong facial expression, and emotional facial expression during heavy scenes deserves an applause. He has his own charm in completely captivating eyes of viewers, specially in scenes where he dominates at court or at war. They both did a great job that I still got to enjoy this drama because of them in the end. I also love the cute chemistry between them.

For the supporting characters, I honestly only liked Xueji the most. At first I thought her character would annoy me like Yun er's character but she was the complete opposite. I loved her character apart from the main leads and wished she had more romantic scenes with Ziyu. As for the second couple, He Zhen and Zhao Quan, I didn't feel much chemistry between them, although I did find Zhao Quan funny.

Overall, all the cast did a great job. I am looking forward to more of Zhang Wan Yi and Wang Churan's future project.

We stan for a power couple!

This was a good watch.
Gotta say, I'm always weary of 40 ep dramas, since  usually there is a whole load of dragging,  annoying second leads, misunderstandings and break-ups involved with a bunch of filler scenes.
While all of the above mentioned was still present in this one, it was done in a more bearable way. The premise of the story is interesting, a seemingly simple amnesia trope with a twist.
The leads are evenly matched and their  multidimensional characters are written quite well.

It's my first time seeing the actor who plays the ML and I really loved how he captured his character. I got to see how his walls gradually crumbled against his ''wife'', and I cracked up how his web of lies always backfired almost instantly haha it's a perfect illustration of ''killing with kindness''  loool.  He portrayed a cold and calculating persona very well , and eventually became completely disarmed by the FL. His comedic timing was great, I found him hilarious on numerous occasions.

It's also my first drama seeing the actress that plays the FL, and I really loved her. Her character is a very smart, strong woman who can be utterly devoted and strives to be her partner's equal in every way. She is no damsel in distress for sure. I like that she made the ML work for his redeeming, because while I understand his motives for deceiving her, it was still very wrong of him to do so, and I appreciate that the FL  recognised that and was not so forgiving. However, I am not a fan of her stabbing him, I don't think that was necessary, it must be a new trend in dramas where FLs stab their ML...

Once we get over this arc, their real relationship starts, and they're goals. We stan for a power couple !!
Also,  can I just say the FL is a queen for establishing boundaries with her mother in law, that was amazing!!

All in all, beautiful directing, smart dialogues, hilarious comedic reliefs,  amazing costumes and strong, intelligent leads, as well as great supporting characters ( the ML and his bestie is the chaotic duo I never knew I needed lmao), and a proper wedding as well as a happy ending? Sign me up!!
Although for me the story became a little bit boring after the leads wedding and I skipped a lot, still, a pretty solid watch.

What's the problem here?

What's the problem here?

I thought about it for a long time, why this show is not as good as it could be.
I personally have no problem with actors. (I wouldn't watch a series just for their sake, but I think they did a decent job.) The story is interesting, so I keep watching, but somehow I still don't really enjoy it.
(I also read the novel, to see if I can figure out what's wrong with the series. The novel is adapted almost one-for-one. So the fault is not to be found in the series)
The problem, I think, is that the political and military thread should be the main thread, and the love thread should be a secondary thread. Here, however, the focus is on the love thread. In this case, the writer subordinated the action to the bickering of the main characters. And it's boring, drawn out and pointless in many parts.
A literal adaptation of this story is a mistake. In 2024, this is already the 3rd Chinese series that either should not have been made into a film, or the original idea should have been reworked into something faster and more spectacular.

Wonderful first half

the story started off nicely i was curious and loved its angstyness but after she found out i guess the show I found it boring and its pace was off. They intoduced a lot of characters in the second half of the show and failed to utilized them well ,they lacked any arc whatsover. The story was typical the end very very typical nothing new.
However the acting was great ,the ML delivered ,he is a found new fav for me.The Fl however wasntg likable and i didnt see any chemistry between the leads. Thee second leads were poorly written they were just there for the vibes not character development or arc for them,Lazy writing. But I loved the story of the king and empress i loved how they came to trust and loved it other.

A refreshing look at WuXia costume drama focused on loved story rather than politics and fighting.

Are You the One is a historical wuxia drama about the love story of Liu Mian Tang and Cui Xing Zhou when she suffered from amnesia and afterward. This is a cute love story and a non-traditional costume drama. Less of fighting and political scenes, which is refreshing.

Synopsis: The clever and decisive Liu Mian Tang, as the first lord of Yang Shan, led the people of Yang Shan to punish the wicked, promote goodness, and uphold justice. However, she suffered serious injuries under the attack of various evil forces. Cui Xing Zhou, the Prince of Huai Yang, rescued her. When Liu Mian Tang woke up, she had no memory of Yang Shan, mistaking Cui Xing Zhou for her husband, Cui Jiu. If their identities were finally exposed, could they face all that honestly while enduring hardships?

My Reviews:
1. It is not a typical Wuxia drama; instead, it is focused on politics, fighting between kingdoms, or internal kingdom conflict. It also focuses on the relationship of the main CP.
2. It is a love story between Liu Mian Tang and Cui Xing Zhou during and post-amnesia.
3. The plot is slow and draggy, and not much excitement after she recovers from her amnesia.
4. Wang Chu Ran's acting ability is mediocre, but Zhang Wan Yi's acting is much better. However, their on-screen chemistry is good.
5. I don't care about the 2nd and 3rd CP, especially the reigning emperor and empress (3rd CP). Their lives are depressing, but they comfort each other and eventually show love and care for each other.
6. However, I must warn you that the plot loses its charm and becomes tedious after the amnesia recovery.

Overall, it is a watchable, refreshing look at costume drama. I enjoy it and give it a 7.5 rating.

Fate, comedy, and conflict

“Are You the One?” captivates with a compelling premise: two rivals that become a fated couple whose love is threatened by a great lie. This setup immediately hooked me, as it’s clear from the outset that obstacles will stand in the way of their happiness. While a promising concept doesn’t automatically make for a great drama, I found that AYTO successfully delivered a satisfying viewing experience.

The drama excels with its engaging storyline, well-developed characters, talented cast, and a conclusion that manages to be pleasing. However, it does have its flaws.

Let’s start with the standout elements, beginning with the cast. I would like to start off by saying that the magic of great actors in comedic roles is undeniable. Having seen Zhang Wanyi in Lost You Forever, I was already aware of his impressive skills, but his performance in AYTO elevated my admiration. His portrayal of Cui Xingzhou diverges sharply from his previous role, yet he handles it with remarkable finesse. His comedic timing, whether through subtle facial expressions or his delivery, was spot-on. His tendency to speak in a whisper — which is something he did quite oftenly —, however, bothered me greatly at times, as it felt unrealistic that other characters could hear him when he spoke so softly.

Wang Churan, by contrast, had a less comedic role, though her early scenes were filled with humor that she executed brilliantly, forming a delightful duo with Zhang Wanyi. Her character undergoes significant shifts throughout the drama — arguably too drastic, though that’s more a writing issue than an acting one — but she consistently maintained a strong performance from start to finish.

Regarding the plot, a key topic of debate among viewers was the separation of Xingzhou and Miantang. Some felt Miantang forgave Xingzhou too quickly, while others thought she should have taken even longer or maybe not forgiven him at all. Personally, I appreciated the narrative choices here; their time apart felt justified, and their gradual reconciliation was coherent and believable. The pacing of their relationship was neither rushed nor dragged out, striking a balance that complemented the growth of both characters, who were well-crafted with relatable desires, fears, and distinct personalities.

One aspect I regretted was the waning romance between Xingzhou and Miantang after they officially got together. In the final episodes, their dynamic shifted from passionate lovers to more of a friendly rapport, which felt at odds given how recently they had married. Nonetheless, they remained the highlight of the drama.

Now, onto the elements that didn’t quite work for me:

A significant political event pivotal to the second half of the drama was glossed over with a simple time skip. This was a missed opportunity, as the event’s importance to the story warranted more on-screen exploration rather than being summarized off-screen. Though I do believe it shouldn’t be too dragged out, it would’ve been appreciated to see at least a little bit of those events.

As for the supporting characters, Shi Xueji emerged as a pleasant surprise, bringing kindness and warmth that resonated with viewers. However, her romance felt rushed towards the end, lacking depth. It did have a big potential, as we got to see Ziyu and her start to have feeling for each other and deeply care for one another. Ziyu, however, only let go of Liu Miantang in the very ending of this drama and at a point where I believe more time was needed for a good romance to be fully developed between him and Xueji.

He Zhen and Zhao Quan were engaging on their own, and their romance was charming when it aligned with the main plot. However, as their storyline diverged, it began to feel disconnected and unnecessary, leaving me questioning why so much screen time was dedicated to them when it no longer served the main narrative in a harmonious way.

My final verdict is that “Are you The One?” was able to leave a good impression and will probably stick with me for a while, as it was one of my favorite 2024 Dramas so far. It has its problems, some that could’ve been easily fixed, others not so much. In the end, however, I enjoyed it and would recommend it to anyone who’s thinking of giving it a go.

Really good!

==Breakdown==
Background plot / palace intrigue - 50%
Romance - 30%
Misc comedy - 20%

Background plot - Good
Romantic chemistry - Excellent
Misc comedy - Good
Production value and direction - Good

Overall thoughts: This is my first drama with Zhang Wan Yi and my second with Wang Chu Ran. I *really* enjoyed Wang Chu Ran in Fireworks (with Yang Yang) and was excited to see her in a historical Cdrama. Zhang Wan Yi impressed me! He has such an interesting voice, I'm so glad he did his own dubbing as I think his inflections added a lot to the overall story.

Highly recommend for: Romance focused watchers in search of great chemistry paired with decent production values in a historical Cdrama.

Fun watch but really draggy storyline

i just finished this drama and overall i liked it but there’s just a few things i would like to say that bothered me. first of all i was so unsatisfied by how little the relationship developed between the emperor and empress went the writer could’ve developed their relationship better the potential was there for their relationship to be way better written. also this drama was wayy too draggy from the FL taking a century to forgive the ML after all he did was lie to her that he was her husband and used her to get his arch nemesis.but he still kept her virtue intact and he never slept with her while she didn’t have her memories in fact he always avoided it because she meant that much to him. also the ML shouldn’t have been stabbed by the FL that was just wayy too much it’s not like he killied someone related to her. also there was soo many characters that shouldn’t have been casted why was the aunt and cousin even casted ?? they brought nothing to the show honestly. also the villains were so undeveloped and there was just so many plot holes which i hated. but nevertheless the chemistry between the ML and FL was amazing also the chemistry between the empress and emperor was really good even with the baldy developed romance.also i loved the last fight scene between the ML AND FL overall this drama is a solid 8 very fun in the beginning but draggy towards the ending.

Awesome Drama

I had not much expectation on this drama as I don’t know both of the actor well except ZWY lost of forever and I don’t really like WCR acting.
First few episode really catch my attention and I started to enjoy every episode.
WCR acting skills has improved a lot and she able to carry LMT role very well. From a housewife to the bandit leader. ZWY acting and emotion of every scene is really on points. My fav scene is the iconic waterfall scene and his lovey dovey husband scene.
This drama is not disappointed and I have rewatch it few times.

Sweet Turning Angsty

The first arch of the drama is to show how sweet FL is an an amnesia victim. Her loving support to her fake husband won her his genuine affection. I was so worried when the time was getting close for ML to have his wedding to his cousin. I thought, no way FL is going to be a concubine, and plus I really don't want this drama to turn into a harem story!

The second arch is when she regained her full memory. We can see how FL suddenly changed her demeanor from sweet and head over heels in love with her husband, into this angry woman who found out that everything has been a lie. Her smile is just not the same anymore. She kept up pretending to still have the amnesia for a bit, and this is where it differs from the novel, where she left him without a second thought!

I'm up to ep 22 now. ML just found out the real identity of FL, which I think he's not totally sad about, because all along he thought of Lu Wen as his match.

I've been a fan of Zhang Wan Yi. I'm glad I get to watch him again not long after Lost You Forever 2. He does have a rather peculiar stare, which some people might say that he's too stiff. But not me, I like it, it's his trademark of some sort! I never watched Wang Chu Ran in any drama before (only heard about high criticism of her drama with Yang2) but boy she's so beautiful, and acting wise she's matching so well with Zhang Wan Yi.

Can't wait to see what ML will have to do to win her again. To be fair to him, it wasn't his plan to fake their marriage in the first place. FL called him "husband" and as a General Commander, he seized that opportunity and just played along with it. Otherwise the whole drama wouldn't exist haha.
