Amazing Show

This show was amazing and I loved everything about it, especially the sorry line I have no complaints except for the fact that to me the main couple was kind of boring because they didn't really interest me. I liked Ha Yi Chan and Cung Ah more they were interesting and everything about their love story is just so cute. Another thing I didn't really like I that when Eun Gyeol came back to the future everything was different and now they were these rich people and I guess that's what happens when you change the past but I just feel as if it was sad that those sweet moments they had in his childhood technically didn't exist anymore. Also, the story doesn't make sense if Eun Gyeol went to the past and altered the future then when he came back to the future shouldn't he not remember his old childhood and now remember a new version with all the changes he made. Other than does small things the story is amazing and I would definitely recommend this.

Best K-Dramas I've watched so far!

My Opinion of the K-Drama

Twinkling watermelon is one of the best k-dramas so far that I've watched. The Story talks about the Main Character Eun Gyeol travel back time to fix the past and know his family's past because of the relationship between him and his dad. He met his Dad and Mom in the past while they were still highschool students and tried to fix and save them from the past.

Music: I liked the music, it was so good and very relaxing, I give it a 10
The Acting was also very good and the Story was really funny, happy, and also talking and showing problems. The Story was also very sad and emotional. So I give it a rating of 10.
I liked the Actress Shin Eun Soo and The actor Choi Hyun Wook and I liked how their relationship was very emotional and also very sad because of the harsh treatment and scolding from Shin Eun Soo's mother-in Law (Idk).

This K-Drama remains as the best K-Drama I've watched so far in my life.

Touching

I didn't know how I'll crying after all, just started watch bcs some actors that I admire was in the screen, but the drama surprised me with photography, good acting also music. Wow, the voice of Ryeoun is powerful and the others guys shines too.
The story is very good.
Seriously: this drama makes you cry, curse (sometimes) and wish the best to the kidos. Also you could appreciate the incredible voices.
Unfortunately I miss some chemistry with some characters, but nothing that I can't handle.

A heartwarming drama that will make you cry and laugh at the same time with a unique plot

I’ve been watching dramas for many year but I think despite the fact that twinkling watermelon is a new kdrama compared to my past favourite, it has achieved the top spot among my favourite kdramas of all time. Nothing compares to this kdrama. i don’t think I’ve ever cried soo much while watching ANY SHOW. and even tho it will make you cry, it has a happy ending and the story isn’t gloomy or sad either. its just heart touching in its own way and will also make you laugh. Here the actor that played “yoon chung ah”, her acting was outstanding, the way she communicated her feeling with just her eyes and hands is fascinating. the story isn’t too slow either.

confusing until the middle-end.

overall the story of the drama is very good, don't want to really retype a summary of it. but overall like everybody else on viki commenters, were confused. i had to rewatch things multiple times on end to understand it because it kinda went extremely fast-paced in the beginning of it. also a lot of plot twists towards the end that started to all make sense at the end. very good story line, very good acting, music was goodish-mid, and i wouldn't rewatch it.

favorite characters: Yun Cheong A, Ha I Chan

Positive, feel good, fun!

Feb 2024
I absolutely loved every episode of this clever, joyful, positive and mysterious K-drama.

Each character brought something to the story. Most were high school students, with supporting adult characters, many of whom could learn a thing or 2 from the youngsters!

As the time-travelling mystery centres around a group of high school students that form a band, eventually called Watermelon Sugar, expect a fair amount of music, as the group and individuals rehearse, play and write.

I loved the cast, who were believable in their roles, had excellent chemistry and sucked me right in.

The present day characters within the central family are warm, challenged, close, but not without their issues.

Characters from the past are very varied; ranging from mysterious, to goofy, aloof, mean and frankly evil.

There are references to child abuse, bullying, threat and suicide, but those scenes sit within a story that is overwhelmingly positive, often funny and also emotional. I laughed, wanted to punch people's lights out and cried, throughout the 16 episodes, which flew by.

This drama can just be enjoyed for what it is, a feel good, happy and positive watch; but within it there are also several messages that can be found if wanted and related to, as well.

Very few plot holes and any I noticed were easily forgiven within an overall well thought out and refreshingly positive watch.

I also loved that the issue of deafness and mutism is so maturely addressed. It didn't seek to make a pity party out of the drama, with the emphasis far more on the family attempting to fit in, support themselves, and be accepted as equals.

Of course, there were characters who attempted to take advantage, bullied and treated them as though they were stupid, but there were also positive friendships too.

There is a scene near the end where a female mature character has travelled back to S.K. from abroad and remarks that things are improving [in how those with deafness are responded to/treated]. I found that very telling.

The romances (yes, plural) are very sweet. A main feature, but at the same time not in a way that overshadows the rest of the story, even though they are an integral part of it.

One of the best characters has to be Grandma, fabulously played by Go Doo-shim. Her personality, attitude and relationship with her grandson, were a joy! Loved the name of their guesthouse too.

Choi Hyun-wook as Yi Chan, was probably my favourite character overall. He just grew on me and I totally loved him.

If I had to name something I thought could have made it even better, it would be more of the latter part of his young story with Cheong-ah. Also a little more of their lives in the present day, after their return from the past (especially that of Se-kyung).

Choi Won-young made a great Dad and I loved Chun Ho-jin (a favourite mature actor), as a music shop owner. The kids who played younger versions of central characters, were great too, especially Jung Hyun Joon (as Ha Eun Gyeol).

There are flaws, but for me, none that I couldn't forgive. I really loved that actions had consequences and that parent/child relationships were widely covered.

Would very happily watch this again and I LOVED the soundtrack (link attached for msin tracks).

my pov for this drama

I just want to tell that if you love time travelling drama.. it's for you.. like me.. I was waiting for something Good.. for some time travelling thing.. in starting all the childhood story and then.. his struggle not to let them know know about his music love was heart touching and when he mat his younger version of father.. that time drama and all things directing it in a good direction for a great drama..
as drama continues he got to know about his father and his struggles. it's a good point to show that our parents has a past to and we are not only one who's struggling here.. I love that part. the more drama went towards it's end the more it got complicated for me because 'I don't want to end it now' is what I felt and at the same time 'okay.. so you have to do this.. you can do this' was in my mind too.
the lessons they gave us through this drama.. form every episode.. is just great.. I learn from this drama is that.. somethings are unavoidable. it will happens no matter how hard you try to stop them.. the more you know the more you want to stop it.. so... better let it happens in more good ways.. less traumatic way..
and one thing for sure.. everything in this world happens has meaning behind it.. like his father stopped him to enter in the music industry because he suffered and don't want his child to felt the same pain.. he was being protective toward his child.. that's all.. and at the same point his child thought the his father is controlling him.. everyone have their own pov so.. if have any misunderstanding.. just talk with them and slove it out..
music of this drama was.. mind blowing.. the lyrics.. voice and all.. was so great.. even after it's over I can't let it out of me..
and the comedy they put in this drama was.. just at another level ...
so.. what I'm telling is.. I recommend this drama to everyone around me.. worth watching and even re-watching it was not a bad choice 🙃🙃🙃

Twinkling Watermelon - A Heartfelt Symphony of Youth, Family, and Timeless Bonds

Twinkling Watermelon - Review

Twinkling Watermelon (2023) is a heartwarming and unique blend of music, fantasy, and coming-of-age storytelling that leaves a deep emotional impact. Directed by Son Jung-hyun and featuring a talented cast led by Ryeoun, Choi Hyun-wook, Seol In-ah, and Shin Eun-soo, the drama captivates viewers with its originality, touching themes, and nostalgic charm.

Story and Themes

The drama revolves around Eun-gyeol (Ryeoun), a musically gifted teenager born to deaf parents. After a mysterious incident, he travels back in time to 1995, where he meets a younger version of his father, Lee Chan (Choi Hyun-wook), and other characters tied to his family’s past. Together, they form a band named Twinkling Watermelon, bringing their love of music to life while navigating their relationships, dreams, and hardships.

The story is a masterful exploration of family, love, identity, and the intergenerational connections that shape us. It beautifully portrays the struggles of the hearing-impaired community and the emotional complexities of growing up. The time-travel element adds depth, allowing viewers to see how past decisions ripple into the future, blending fantasy with real-world emotions seamlessly.

Performances

Ryeoun shines as Eun-gyeol, delivering a heartfelt performance that balances youthful energy and emotional maturity. Choi Hyun-wook impresses as Lee Chan, embodying a playful yet deeply vulnerable character with charm and depth. Shin Eun-soo and Seol In-ah also bring grace and emotional weight to their respective roles, particularly in their portrayal of complex relationships and unspoken emotions.

The chemistry among the cast is natural and engaging, making their individual struggles and shared moments feel authentic. The dynamic between Eun-gyeol and his father, both young and present-day versions, is particularly poignant and serves as the emotional core of the drama.

Visuals and Cinematography

The cinematography is visually striking, with vibrant and nostalgic scenes set in the 1990s. The juxtaposition of modern and retro aesthetics creates a visually compelling narrative. The use of lighting and symbolic imagery adds a layer of artistry, enhancing the drama’s emotional resonance.

Music and OST

As a music-centric drama, Twinkling Watermelon delivers an exceptional soundtrack. The band performances are electrifying, with a mix of rock, ballads, and heartwarming melodies that resonate deeply with the audience. The music not only enriches the story but also becomes a character in itself, symbolizing connection, healing, and self-expression.

Strengths

Unique and emotionally rich storyline that blends fantasy and reality.

Outstanding performances by the cast, especially Ryeoun and Choi Hyun-wook.

Beautifully crafted visuals and nostalgic 1990s setting.

A memorable and emotionally impactful soundtrack.

Weaknesses

The pacing can feel uneven at times, with certain subplots either rushed or underdeveloped. Additionally, the time-travel logic may not satisfy viewers seeking a strictly coherent explanation, but this doesn’t detract from the emotional journey of the story.

Final Thoughts

Twinkling Watermelon is a gem of a drama that combines heart, humor, and music to create an unforgettable experience. It’s a celebration of youth, family, and the bonds that transcend time, making it a must-watch for fans of coming-of-age tales with a touch of fantasy.

Rating: 9.5/10
A moving and beautifully crafted story that will leave your heart full and your playlist enriched.
