So far so good ... entertaining and good acting

Ep12/13 : I am revising my rating of this story as it's repetitive. Episode 11, I thought there's finally some progress. She shows remorse for what she did to her ex-husband. In the next episode, she contradicts herself. They are just going back and forth ... for now I am going to drop it because I don't have time to watch these back-and-forth plot fillers. Maybe when they finally resolve her conflicts, it will be better... but for now, I am switching to another show: As Beautiful as You because the plot is more focused there.

I also don't like the lead actress ... her expressions are sometimes annoying to watch because it's too modern ...

This is a solid story. Yes, it's confusing at first ... but if you are patient to wait for the development and growth of the characters, by ep 11, you will start to understand and feel less frustrated.

Special effects in fighting scenes are not as good as The Double ... in general, the filming is just normal C Drama. However, the story makes the drama.
I feel that in these types of stories, acting and plot make a huge difference, not the fighting or special effects.

There are lots of twists and funny lines in the story, which is full of redemptions ... I love that the relationships of the characters are better in the 2nd life. When given a chance to communicate in the 2nd life, the leads do ! And that is what makes this story interesting to watch. They know what happened in the last life. They communicate their needs and they worked things out.

People ask is this story a tragedy, comedy ? I think it's a story about redemption. It's complicated but it's unfolding slowly through communication.
It's a comedy of errors because the FL is too strong-will and controlling. She turns all her relationships into tragedy. She wants to fix things for others without asking their permission or even understanding the reasons behind their actions. She is essentially a good person. But she's too controlling.

In her second life, she is willing to listen fix her flaws. I think it takes a humble person to do this ... to make things right the second time.

the best drama with a good cast. I hope there is another drama that brings them together

I liked the storyline, cast acting, and atmosphere in the drama. It doesn't feel boring, their chemistry is perfect! The age difference between Zhang Linghe & Zhao Jinmai here is not very visible. Maimai as Li Rong is very good, she is a professional actress. Hopefully the rumors that say they will collaborate on another drama are true, I'm waiting for your next work. The drama projects the two of them take on never fail, they're always good. This drama also always occupies top 1 in the first episode, I'm very proud??

The Legend of the Loss of Five Stars (TLOTLOFS)

My second attempt at a review, so bear with me. As a rule, I TRY to always hold off until I've watched the ending; however, I don't think the problems I have with this drama will change even if the story improves tremendously.

First, I want to address the story. If this story didn't have the MDL forum, it would probably have a much lower rating on here. The character's misunderstandings and motivations need to be frequently explained by those who have read the book. You lose me when I have to watch a drama where the story, the characters, the direction ARE NOT the one's letting me know what is going on. I keep reading in the comments, "Oh....I read the novel, so now I, forgive, understand, etc." I'm sorry....but I'm not an avid reader (don't judge), and I don't feel I should have to read anything to supplement me watching anything. A great TV drama should stand by itself. This, unfortunately, needs book legs. When I'm constantly pulled out to ask...why did he/she do this, it makes me want to give up watching. Delete 2.5 stars.

Second, I want to address the acting. I don't think it's as bad as some are saying. I do think some areas need to be improved/addressed; however. I'm a HUGE fan of the ML. I'm not familiar too much with the FL except for one drama. I do believe ZLH (and I'm hugely bias, yes) is doing a better job at conveying his feelings, making me sympathize with him, etc. As for the FL, she's gorgeous, but sometimes, I said, sometimes, her unfitting-to-the-scene expressions actually pulls me out of the moment. During one scene, while the ML was crying and pouring his heart out, her rather blank expression didn’t match the passion of the scene. I wanted to be pulled in, engulfed in the moment with them. Instead, I was left drenched with disappointment in front of my computer. The meme to explain this moment would be the Michael Scott face of complete and utter annoyance. Delete 1 star. (For the record, I do believe ZJM is a lovely actress who just needs a little more time to grow and improve. I believe she should have been given better direction here).

Third, and at this point, the FL's character is too confusing for my taste. This is the writer's fault and not ZJM. A big turn off for me is when the drama shows too much "skinship" between the leads and SL's. I have forgiven some characters if they grovel, cry, and show some remorse in their actions. Here, the FL's actions are confusing regarding the SML. I understand needing/wanting a love triangle, but I was looking for a stronger feeling toward the ML by now. For me, the ML/SML dynamic is so very unnecessary here since the couple was married to each other for many years in a previous life and this story should be all about THEIR second chance. Delete 1.5 stars.

I do give Kudos to ZJM for picking such a controversial role. Apparently, the book character is atrocious. While she is slightly less atrocious regarding her actions toward the ML in the drama, her actions in the beginning can leave a very bad first impression. Some people hold onto first impressions, some are able to let them go. No stars deleted or added since I'm able to move forward as I wait to see how the character development progresses.

This review pained me to write because all the other dramas the ML was in, I loved. There were just too many problems with this one.

A Timeless Tale! Indeed, "The Princess Royal" lives up to its captivating synopsis!!

Indeed, "The Princess Royal" lives up to my expectations and what's written in the synopsis! Even though I've only watched 6 episodes, I've watched some of the things mentioned in the synopsis;
The Princess Royal is a historical romance drama that revolves around the political marriage between Princess Li Rong of Xia and Pei Wenxuan. They only married for personal gain, with no affection in their hearts for each other. When a mysterious phenomenon allows them to travel back in time to their younger years "18 years", they are given a second chance at life and love. Will they seize this opportunity to rewrite their destiny, or will the same mistake ensue?

The Princess Royal is a historical drama that masterfully weaves together politics, and a hint of fantasy, creating a captivating narrative that will keep you enthralled right from the first episode. The show boasts exceptional writing, with well-developed characters, engaging dialogue, and a plot that expertly balances suspense and emotional depth.

Zhang Ling He brings depth and nuance to the complex Pei Wenxuan, while Zhao Jin Mai shines as the strong-willed and determined Princess Li Rong. The chemistry between the leads is undeniable. Even with 6 episodes, one can see their firing chemistry. Zhang Ling He and Zhao Jin Mai are nailing their roles excellently. "The Princess Royal". The supporting cast is equally impressive, with memorable performances from the entire ensemble.

The show's production values are stunning, with lavish costumes, breathtaking scenery, and meticulous attention to historical detail. The cinematography is also breathtaking.

The Princess Royal explores has engaging storyline, memorable characters, and stunning visuals, this show is indeed a must-watch.

The Princess Royal is a must-watch for anyone who enjoys historical romance dramas, political intrigue, or fantasy elements. With its exceptional writing, outstanding performances, and stunning production values, it's a show that's very interesting. So, grab some popcorn, get comfortable, and immerse yourself in this epic tale of love and power.

*UPDATED*
EP 9/10; Wow, what an episode!
The recent episode ends with a stunning twist that'll make you eager for more. Don't miss out on this "intriguing" drama!

**UPDATED**
EP 11-13; Zhang Ling He is indeed the perfect actor when it comes to historical dramas, his facial expression are spot on. And Zhao Jin Mai, this is her first historical drama I'm watching, but she's also performing her role as The Princess Royal very well. When excellent actors are casted into a well written story, then there's only one word to describe how the drama is going to turn out, "Peerless". Yes, this is definitely a peerless drama! I gave this 9.5 previously, but in retrospect, I realized there's no reason for me not to give this work of art a full 10!

A total simp drama

His wife literally humiliated him, cheated on him and killed him in the previous life. But what did he do? He is trying to match his wife and her past lover (also who killed him). I mean, what the f**k. Can you be a bit man enough? It's not a realistic drama at all. The scheme plots till now are so vague that you will not understand actually what happened. I can understand one thing about Chinese drama: why there is always a male second lead, and the heroin is really close to them, but rarely any second heroin, even if there was, she will be treated as air by the hero. Feminism at its peak,

A Do Over + Zhang Ling He + Zhao Jin Mai = A recipe for perfect drama!

Ep 1 to Ep 6: I have bad feeling. That it isn't really a a reincarnation trope but dream one, like the one in Scent Of Time, where by the end we figure out that there are no second chances or redos in life. You live it once, so you should live it well to not leave behind any regrets. From the first episodes, it was easy to see that there were a lot of misunderstandings between the leads. I do not like Li Rong in the 2nd episode at all. She humiliated him so much, it was disturbing to watch. That is not a lead character you root for, reminds me of Li Su Su hitting Tantai Jin when she returned back in time. Throughout the episode I kept wondering when they would figure out about their second chances, it is good that it happened earlier on. 3rd episode clarifies a few things about their previous relationship. There was such a lack of trust between them, when it was necessary to speak out for their relationship, Pei Wen Xuan remained silent . At the same time, Li Rong spoke over him, trying to save some dignity, claiming that she liked someone else. What Fools! In 4th episode, we find out that We Xuan knew that Li Rong thought he had betrayed her & didn't clarify because things weren't simple. As we get glimpses of their marriage, it does seem like he let her down a lot. He also admits it himself, maybe that's the reason he seems to like her & wants to protect her despite of the way she treated him when they started again. Zhang Ling He does so well in historical costume dramas. The glimpse of the lovey dovey memories makes me wonder when did it start going wrong. You can see that Pei Wen Xuan refuses to deny his involvement with Zhen Zhen, I wonder why though? I can only hope that he did not cheat on her. It is hard to come back from that.

Ep 7 to Ep 13: Oh what a mess! The only reason things didn't work out between the two is because they refused to trust each other and depend on each other. It didn't even take much to break them apart, just a little misunderstanding. Li Rong was insecure and did not trust him, Pei Wen Xuan cared more about his ego than their relationship. If only they had talked to each other and sorted things out, but no, who wants to be mature! That conversation in the rain was a long time coming and I'm so glad Pei Wen Xuan took that lead. I kept wondering why on the earth would he listen to her nonsense. All he had to do was deny it once. But in Li Rong's defense, it did seem like Wen Xuan had unresolved feelings for Zhen Zhen. He even said that she should have waited for him to sort through it. How long after being loved by him was she supposed to deal with his feelings for other woman? Even if those feelings turn out nothing but a habit that was mistake as feelings. Their relationship status was sure as hell complicated. I just hope that if this is not a dream, both of them make it by the end. I like watching jelaous Wen Xuan, at least he is not holding it in like the previous lifetime where he just let Su Rong Qing have her.

Ep 14 & Ep 15: What Li Rong did for Pei Wen Xuan was beautiful & a long time coming. Right now, I do feel like the script has issues, but the characters & the leads make up for it. It is especially good when Pei Wen Xuan decides to act all cute. Them claiming that they are besties is good way for them to start their relationship this time around.

This has been interesting from the get go & the cast has a done a good job of it. Now, I have to wait for 1-2 or episodes daily.

.......

I want to say that the acting of many of the actors in this drama is not that good... I looked at the drama page and everyone but me is praising them.
I think I'm the only one who felt this way, so ignore my review and enjoy it for those who will enjoy it.
In particular, the acting of the supporting actors is really bad...

So many questions, so many pasts, so many potentials

"Different reincarnation vibe than Story of Kunning Palace..."

That's the first feeling I got from this 6 episodes, maybe I was a little bit disappointed coz the last thing I love from Zhang Ling He is Story of Kunning Palace... I love a dark hero kinda vibe in a story, as I read The Princess Royal's summary makes me imagining back to the previous drama (maybe I haven't move on yet? hahahahaha). But here, the ML shows the usual patriotic hero of a kingdom character (for me personally, less interesting).
Zhang Ling He is a talented newcomer actor who, I must say, earn my praise, his acting in SoKP marked my eyes on him. But in this drama, I saw him in the new light again. Not much that I can say for these beginnings, but the story's definitely intriguing makes us can't stop wanting for more. The potentials are there, so hoping the team creator can execute it well.

A confused drama

Yes, confused…not confusing. Because this drama acts like it doesn’t know what it wants to be: a comedy or a tragedy. I was so looking forward to this series based on the beautifully edited trailers that had me chuckling at the witty antics of the FL. I knew there would come a shift in tone as the more serious palace matters took precedent, but those usually come towards the end of these types of plots. What I didn’t expect was that this drama was shot in a way that even the scenes that previously had me laughing in the trailer fell with a thud in the actual drama. What was portrayed as cute pranks turned out to be acts of petty cruelty by a FL who isn’t nearly as intelligent as I had hoped for. I’ll give an example:

Minor spoiler here, though it happens in episode 3/4 so not a huge giveaway. Our FL is shocked the man she thought she trusted over everyone would be implicated as the one who poisoned her. We, as the audience, are just slightly surprised UNTIL the backstory is given that his entire family was slaughtered by FL’s father and this man was then made into a eunuch because the FL asked his life be saved and then she shows more “kindness” by offering for him to serve in her palace. Like what?!? And then when it’s revealed he hated her, she’s like “but I saved his life.” How stupid is this character? No, not stupidity - entitlement and completely out-of-touch with normies. This shows up in early episodes with some nasty bullying of the ML. At one point reminding him that he’s just a commoner and that, as a royal, she can take his life whenever she pleases and then this chick turns around and asks the other guy (also a commoner) if he will be her consort after he witnesses and hears her rant. Who would want to marry this and spend their lives catering to - from all he can see - a power tripping harpy?!? And she honestly thinks he’s going to say yes. ? How am I supposed to get on the side of this nasty, bratty character. At this point I’m hoping the ML escapes her claws. But no, he’s mind-bogglingly kind and loyal, which just makes her look even worse.

Who ruined this drama? I honestly put 30% of the blame on the script and the rest on this director. Everything from his direction of acting to the bad editing to the abysmal lack of proper BGM, essential in comedic films. Because the show can be funny. The trailers showed it can be amazing. But the way this director put everything together was just awful. Like imagine the plot of How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days but shot with the tone and intensity of Schindler’s List. Ugh!

This might be one of my favorite costume drama. Everything about this drama is magnificent from the story, locations, costumes and the characters. I really love the FL her portrayal of the character is on point. I can't wait to watch the next episode. Thank you TPR team for creating this masterpiece.
