Finally A Xianxia with A Proper HE

I could say that about The Legend of Shen Li too but that one I consider to be more fantasy. Anyways, I picked this because of DW as I had seen previously in both LYF's and as a small supporting role in a low budget modern years back. I wanted to see his range of emotions and acting skills in general.

Pros: I think DW or SYS has improved a lot. He was able to be cold and even devilishly evil, jealous, stubborn as well as happy and in love. We all know he can cry and spit blood well lol. His chemistry with the FL or MQG/XRR was on point. I have to say that this plot wasn't new by any means and we figured out fairly quickly who the big bad was even though he technically didn't appear until episode 30. SYS' unconditional love for MQG/XRR was palpable when he did everything within his power to reincarnate her and then also fell in love and vice versa with XRR. The amnesia arc wasn't too bad but I wish it didn't stretch out as long as it did because our leads barely got any together time until the last 3 episodes and a few in between; in order to break the amnesia curse he had to fall for her yet again which he did of course as some part of him still retained memories and feelings; especially his fantasy dreams lol. Though SYS definitely gained ground with 3 kids in 13 years (very much working on a 4th) and with the wedding. This is how a Xianxia should end as opposed to looking at each other from a distance not hugging or anything in the last 5 seconds of the show. They got rid of the bad guy, had a proper wedding and then left the sect in the hands of their friends to travel the world and build their own home around the reincarnation tree.

What I loved about XRR was that she wasn't the damsel in distress type that needed to be saved. She was willing to get in the thick of things to fix a problem; she sacrificed herself the first time around, then helped others, and went after him when he sacrificed himself. She was like ok cry for about five seconds and then get down to business. She was resolutely against just resigning to what fate gave her; willing to challenge heaven's will at every turn. She was bright and airy, made many friends easily and for life. Was always willing to give people a second or third or zillionth chance as long as that person could return to the right path.

I have to say that a huge chunk of the TBOY cast was in this one which was great to see them play different roles. Her 3 friends when she joined the sect post reincarnation, ZY the exasperated other senior who was always keeping SYS in check or trying to. He was the sounding board. The alcohol and other talisman plus medicine sect guys. I called him goofy lukewarm evil WJ was comic relief. You couldn't take him seriously; DK played him very well. ZFH was a good person and even took in batshit crazy MRW at the end. The few other sect people were good as well as the people who they met along the way and helped, returned the favors. Only real good thing about the main antagonist was just how many plans he had to get where he wanted to go. I liked when they went around solving cases DT would throw their way.

Costumes, CGI, and some of the music was pretty decent too. And most importantly, plot never really dragged or you felt the need to skip episodes.

Cons: DT though the big bad that caused a lot of harm; his one note expressions weren't great. Furthermore, this actor is known for playing protagonists, so as the main antagonist, it didn't suit him. The other two villains of the piece were the sister of MQG aka MRW and the crown prince. One was ridiculously jealous because she was just ordinary; wanted all power her sister had. The crown prince was twisted obsessed with MQG and was willing to do whatever to get her to be his including harming others. He got a rather blah redemption arc at the end where he killed a shadow person of SYS and himself so DT's plan ultimately failed. The sister's whole collapse into insanity after watching someone she never cared about but had unrequited love for her die, all of a sudden she wanted that guy. Like what? Didn’t you just spend 30 something episodes trying to get the CP to love you? Just whiplash madness that made no sense. I would have preferred her to die a horrible death for all the harm she caused to her sister and others.

Can they please start writing inner monologues for the FLs in these dramas? XRR spend up to half episodes just walking around the sect talking to herself and then would be all surprised when someone caught her. It was annoying to the point that I had to ffw her a few times. A guy would have maybe say one line out loud and the rest would be inner thoughts, but women had to look like lunatics walking in circles talking to themselves. Furthermore, her voice as XRR was so much higher than MQG and it felt like she was a 12 year old at times not 18 or 19 or whatever it was. I was glad when her memories combined and she started speaking like an adult again.

It was sad that given that Hengdian has such lush forests and scenery they still needed to use fake woods a lot of the times. Not a fan of that. This show could have easily been 35 episodes and still been fine.

Would I recommend it? Yes, I would. It was a nice watch and if you're interested in DW's improvement in acting, you'll like him here. Originally, I was going to give this an 8 but upped to an 8.5 because of that awesome ending.

A Romantic&Light Xian Xia

While this seem to just another XianXia cdrama trope. Master-disciple , reincarnation and etc. But the feel probably will be different especially with how romance is shown. Im a sucker for "undying love between 2" trope in romance.

However what I like about this drama is how the main cp know their own hearts and sort of follow it. (Even though right now ML is supressing it in order to help and fulfill his master wish but I am sure that soon he will do what he wants).
Su Yishui and Ranran scenes are just so worth giggling for. And I have big smile everytime their sweet scenes come. I guess i like this trope of cold but devoted ml and bubbly cute and straight forward fl.
I like everyone actings here. They all just fit to their roles.
And the cinematography and cgi (for c drama) is perfect. I hope to see more of the white tiger in upcoming eps both its original size and the small cute one. The lightning in fighting scenes do not bother me like some other Xian Xias do.
And the osts are just so nice. I love all the 6 songs i have listened. But my two favourites will be One Tree, Two People by Tia Ray and Circle of Fate by Liu Yining.

Update on my thoughts (Spoilers 🚨)
The production and CGI never fails till the end.
I love all the actions and fighting scenes. Its 100/10 for me.
As for the story, I love how we SYS/MQG loves each other as shown. I was giggling in most of their scene.
The ending is actually quite happy. (Feel rushed a little)
I am grateful this adaptation keeps many characters alive just like in novel. But i find the last scene to be very childish cringe in way they (mature cultivators ) taking token to be domestic slave. Lol Imany find it cute. I just cant. 😅 WHY CANT THEY DO IT TOGETHER which would be more fulfilling for me.

All in all I enjoy the show despite something i wish there is. My overall score is 9.5/10.

(I personally prefer the novel and the build up plot for the divine tree. Guess i prefer more grounded Ranran in novel although I do appreciate straight forwardness of mqg/rr in the drama. Im annoyed mqg was quite nice to Suyu in drama even after things happened. Another thing is I dont like this lotus freeze technique to torture ML whenever he felt emotion. And him having to push away fl when she confessed . I prefer the version of novel more in which Su Yishui can control Spirit Spring to a level. I somehow did not feel hes pushy. Besides i, as novel fan, also cut score drama for cutting out on their original lives in heaven while ML was sent to mortal world as demon child and why MQG had to recruit and forced him to be her disciple. I much prefer how in novel he is demon immortal and can control his demonic power to use it very consciously , not actually possessed by it as shown in later eps in drama. Of course these are just my personal preferences. )

Not having anything to watch than go for it or if you like the male lead.

I didn’t like the story much. It started on a good note but then became flat. It gets interesting when he forgets everything, but eventually, it becomes flat again.

Although the writer has given it a perfect ending—one that viewers always wish for—there isn’t much spark in the story. It feels somewhat boring, yet at the same time, it’s not exactly boring.

The acting, however, is perfect."

A story where the leads give each other the home they didn't have :")

OMG I FINALLY FINISHED THIS. Deng Wei as Su Yi Shui 苏易水 definitely stole my heart, ugh that face with a cold but loving demeanour? I want to put my face in a pillow and just-

AHHHHHHHHHH!! (*ᴗ͈ˬᴗ͈)ꕤ*.゚
-cue muffled screams

“一个屋子前有了树,便不再只是屋子,而是家。”
The line that warmed my cold heart tired from work and life. The line that ties them together. The line that made the drama. Iconic. Love it.

I started off not expecting much because idk the cast except for Deng Wei from Till the End of the Moon, but grew to enjoy the drama. But as usual, I'll be as objective as I can in my review-

✨ What I enjoyed:
• MLFL's chemistry together: They are hella! cute!! Cute across 2 different lifetimes (though according to others, there's a 3rd one in the novel)-

Where the first one we saw the FL as Mu Qing Ge 沐清歌 who is all 潇洒 (dictionary: natural and unrestrained, elegant and unconventional) in her big sister vibes together with ML as her disciple. She really 把徒弟撩得不要不要的 hehe (⸝⸝ᵕᴗᵕ⸝⸝) (teased her disciple a lot? Lost in translation but it's super cute) - I usually feel a little iffy about (slightly) older FL with younger ML in this kind of genre specifically but it's surprisingly adorable and how he slowly opened his heart to her + how she gave him a home it's all fluffy and warm hehe :"))

And the second lifetime now we have the FL as the reborn Xue Ran Ran 薛冉冉 who is kinda a 傻白甜 (sweet, naive young woman) with the ML being the same person but 18 years older now (though uh I guess that is ok in the world of immortality?? she's 18 now also sooo), much colder as well as wiser, and with lots of regret in his bucket. This pair is super cute as well! I saw netizens on XHS talking about how it's like ML gets to witness Mu Qing Ge in her youth that he has previously missed out on, so she's not necessary a different person and like aww. FL's cuteness here really charmed the ML in a different way, it's cute that he gave the teachings and emotions he learned from his shifu from her previous life back to her in her new life. Everything is a full circle. It's his turn to give her a home!

Is there one relationship I prefer? Yes, and that is the happy ending!!! Where they now take turns to be the shifu. THAT IS SO CUTE HELP. Though if you were to point a gun to my head, I would say I prefer the first lifetime heh, because of how good the FL acted as Mu Qing Ge - super charming.

• Acting: Deng Wei delivers his role really well of course, but the Xiang Han Zhi surprises me - in a good way. I didn't know her before this so at first I was like hmm her acting's kinda awkward but I gradually warmed up to her and she is super charming as Mu Qing Ge like damn I love the character so much. Side characters wise... most are ok except for a few that feels off but what's new haha
• Story: Shifu and disciple swap-around story across 2 lifetimes is cute and kinda refreshing from the usual demon lord ML troupe (though we still got a little bit of that...), with steady story progression
• Little to no loop holes: I enjoyed how the drama EXPLAINS. Like sometimes the characters do things you may not understand at first but don't worry, they will eventually explain. I want to thank them for using their mouths to actually talk, unlike some other dramas where I have to make lots of assumptions.
• Iconic scene: THAT ONE SCENE. Where ML came back to 西山 late on his birthday feeling all alone and the FL came out to fetch him with an umbrella, while lighting up all the lanterns to welcome him back *home* imma cry :")
• DENG WEI 邓为!!!!!!!!!!!!!: Tbh, he's not even my type. But how he played the role? 10/10 charming. The way he raises his eyebrow, the way he smirks, the way he looks pained and conflicted, the way he looks at the FL with so much love, the way he looks like a little puppy beside the FL, the way he scowls when he's jealous... hahaha
• Xiang Han Zhi 向涵之: Like I said, she nailed it as Mu Qing Ge! When she gets good, she shows it and looks super badass I love my strong FLs <3 Xue Ran Ran is cute... but Mu Qing Ge is just. Damn.
• Progression for the FL: I love that it's quite obvious when Xue Ran Ran progresses, her voice and standing pose changes gradually to show it. You can tell her voice gets slightly deeper (but not as matured sounding as Mu Qing Ge) and she stands more like a proper 修道之人 (trained martial arts person??)
• OST: 《缘圈》by 刘宇宁 is one of the reasons I decided to watch the drama because it is so good.
• Good CGI: From first to last episode, the CGI is nothing short of impressive - dragon looks good, the whole falling world and buildings, monsters etc.
• Outfits: I love the airy fairy outfits where they have a fabric tail dragging at the bottom end on the floor, it looks so graceful and pretty when the characters move! More so to highlight the elegance of high-level characters.
• Drama title: "有树" highlights the home that FL and ML built for one another

💥 Things I didn't enjoy:
• Too much blood vomiting: As usual haha. Well, but what's a period fantasy cdrama without lots of blood vomiting? That's the easiest to strike off on my bingo card man. Just gets a little tiring sometimes, like ok here we go again.
• Dragginess: I really enjoyed the story, but at some point it got draggy. Like huh, she/he's gonna die again, or she/he's gonna sacrifice again, OR oh no memory loss troupe attacked! It was going round and round and they kept having to save one another. I'm not gonna elaborate but let's just say, I got really tired at 20+ episodes in, think we could have done better with a 32~36 episodes cut instead with one lesser obstacle.
• Too much CGI: Very good visual effects but idk, it felt a little overwhelming towards the end but perhaps I was just getting CGI-fatigue together with the dragginess of the story then.
• So many bad guys lol... give the leads a break pls :(
• Some parts don't make sense / too convenient: It felt like for some of the bad guys they built up quite a lot but couldn't find a strong, valid way for the good guys to win so they have to force it a little
• Chemistry a little off sometimes: Like I mentioned above, I really love the chemistry! But maybe it's just me, there were some scenes with really strong emotions where I was expecting them to hug tight. Ya know, the kind with lots of emotions where the MLFL cling on to one another as though if they let go, the other person will vanish. But instead, many of the touching scenes just ended in them holding hands and staring into each others' eyes or a gentle hug. GIVE ME MY SOUL CRUSHING HUG WHERE THEY WILL RUN INTO ONE ANOTHER AND HUG SO TIGHT WITH BRIMMING TEARS IN THEIR EYES THEY HAVE TO GASP FOR AIR. Not enough cute scenes.

Ok if someone is reading this, thank you for finishing this long review - I didn't intend for this to be so long but somehow it just ended up like this oh god...

Overall, this is a really good watch that will warm your heart with the love the leads have between them. Just a little draggy. They deserve their happily ever after!

A Refreshing Xianxia: Grounded in Human Cultivation with a Truly Satisfying Ending

I've got so much to share after finishing the final episodes, and there's a lot to unpack. Overall, this is undoubtedly one of the best xianxia dramas I've ever seen in a very VERYYY long time.

Unique Focus:
Although it’s a xianxia drama, the story centers on human cultivation rather than the usual celestial realm themes, which is a refreshing change. There are plenty of twists, and even the villains add a humorous touch. Instead of the typical portrayal where sect leaders are bad guys pretending to be good, unreasonable, here they follow their own moral compass—they have flaws in the views but at the end of the day when it really maters, they are willing to help fight and defend what they believe is best for humanity.

Power Couple:
The male and female leads are a true power couple. Their partnership, especially when they fight side by side, is nothing short of spectacular. Both are extremely intelligent and communicate well, so even if there are misunderstandings they eventually talk it out. There's a lot of weird dynamics here which is fun. The FL as master and the ML as apprentice. The ML as master and the FL as apprentice. The ML & FL both being apprentices. The Ml & FL both being masters... yup. that's the dynamic lol but it's entertaining as heck. The angst are angsty, the sweet scenes are nicely sugar coated.

Engaging Side Characters:
It’s been a while since I cheered for side couples. With five additional pairings, each with their own bittersweet story, the supporting characters add a delightful depth to the drama. I especially liked Wei Jiu. He's literally a villain that tries his best to be bad. I've never seen a villain that has villain codes...as in what in what is acceptable/unacceptable for a villain to do. He's a team rocket member that gets blasted away every time but always come back to try again.

Satisfying Ending:
The ending is far from typical for xianxia dramas. The final episode takes its time wrapping everything up, offering a candid and well-paced finale without resorting to making an extra episode to appease fans. There's also no "lets dedicate the last min to our main couple staring at each other" or "lets have one of them sacrifice each other so the other can live on in the end". I havent been so satisified with an ending in a while and It just makes the feeling of watching this drama feels so good after everything that happened.

Stunning Visuals:
The CGI stays impressive throughout the series, culminating in a grand finale of epic special effects. The integration of real nature scenes—like the sea, waterfalls, bamboo forests, farmlands, and cliffs—creates an incredibly immersive experience. I can't remember the last xianxia where there's so many dedicated real-scenes locations.

Outstanding Performances:
The entire cast delivers strong performances. I don't have any negative thing to say about anybody performance here. Even the bad people in the drama did really well in their portrayal. Deng Wei’s acting in Love of the Divine Tree truly stands out for me. His expressive eyes shift effortlessly from gentle sweetness to intense fury to deep sadness. His tearful scenes always move me, and his smile is simply contagious.

There’s so much more to discuss, but overall, this drama is hands down one of the best I’ve seen in a long time, despite a few minor flaws. It's definitely one that I would actually recommend to my friends and one with a high rewatch value.

Edit:
MQG is SYS's Moon, and SRR is SYS's Sun. Coming from the same soul, they both provided him with light during his darkest days.

MQG lit the way for SYS when all he could see ahead was darkness and hate. She gave him a home, a choice to change his destiny, and the reassurance that he deserves to be happy and experience all the sweetness the world has to offer. She believed in him when no one else did.

SRR showed SYS that he could be loved and forgiven. Living with regret and depression, feeling unworthy of happiness because of his past and unable to forgive himself, he found warmth, reassurance, and care in her presence —just as the Sun nurtures life, she reminded him that he, too, could heal, grow, and shine again.

A Visually Stunning but Frustrating Love Story

This drama was an enjoyable watch, especially for those who appreciate historical fantasy romance. I had been eagerly waiting to see Deng Wei in a lead role, and I was not disappointed. His presence truly elevated the experience, making it worth the watch.

Visuals and Costumes:
The visuals were stunning, particularly the way the leads were portrayed and the depth of their love. The costumes were another highlight, with the ML’s flowy robes stealing the spotlight. Deng Wei is simply made for costume dramas, and his outfits complemented his dreamy looks perfectly.

Plot and Pacing:
The plot, while not groundbreaking, was easy to follow and very predictable. However, predictability isn’t necessarily a drawback, as it provides comfort and familiarity, especially for new viewers of the genre. That being said, I do wish the drama had incorporated fresher elements to make it stand out from similar stories. One aspect I particularly liked was the decision to reveal the past life flashback at the beginning rather than saving it for the final quarter, which is a common trope in dramas of this kind.

Characters:
**Male Lead – Su Yi Shui:**
Su Yi Shui is a morally grey, distrustful, and scheming character—a persona I genuinely enjoyed. However, he undergoes a complete transformation after the death of his master, Mu Qing Ge, becoming a total opposite in his devotion to resurrecting her. His love runs deep, and he makes significant sacrifices for her sake. Unfortunately, this also means he keeps his distance and maintains a cold exterior for nearly 80% of the drama. This aspect frustrated me, as it led to the FL having to chase after him and work hard for his attention all the time, which is a trope I personally don’t enjoy. Others may not mind, but it was a sticking point for me.

**Female Lead – Mu Qing Ge / Xue Ran Ran:**
Mu Qing Ge was a powerful prodigy cultivator who was considered eccentric by the broader cultivator community. She fell for Su Yi Shu at first sight and tricked him into becoming her disciple. I thoroughly enjoyed her shameless pursuit of him and the way she toyed with him in the early episodes because it was fun. It’s a shame she met such an untimely demise because her character was incredibly badass.

After her death, we fast forward 18 years to her reincarnation as Xue Ran Ran, who, unlike her past self, has no memories and possesses a bubbly and cheerful personality. She is friendly and kind to everyone, and, naturally she gets on the ML’s radar. Predictably, he takes her in as his disciple, leading to an amusing master-disciple dynamic. Their romance is sweet, filled with adorable and funny moments, but once again, the ML’s relentless struggle against his feelings became frustrating.

Supporting Cast and Villains:
The supporting characters, especially the fellow disciples, added a lot of charm and entertainment to the drama. As for the villains, they were quite typical—nothing particularly memorable about them.

Final Thoughts:
While I genuinely enjoyed this drama, I believe it did not need 40 episodes. Like many long dramas, the second half felt repetitive, with recycled plot points that made the viewing experience feel drawn out. The last five episodes, in particular, were exhausting to get through.

That being said, if you enjoy a historical fantasy romance with a devoted ML, a strong-willed FL , a happy and not rushed ending, and beautiful visuals, this drama is still worth the watch!

Finding your own path

Adapted from the novel of the same name, Love of the Divine Tree is at face value not much different from your average xianxia story. There are immortal and demonic cultivators, master-disciple relationship stories, love trials, and an ultimate baddie trying to destroy the world.

What is delightfully surprising to me about this drama is that there is a real earnestness in telling a story with developed characters and themes, brought to life by a young but talented cast led by Deng Wei and Julia Xiang. Their master-disciple love story is full of twists and turns, reflecting life's inevitable ebbs and flows and ups and downs. Thus is the core of this drama's main theme - finding one's path in life is built up on the past but not beholden to it. The past is gone, and the future is unknown. All we can know is the present, and we must learn how to cherish it. Living in regret or obsession over what is lost or not ours will not only lead to our own downfall but also the destruction of everything we hold dear.

In addition to this core story embodied by our main leads (and second leads) are many wonderful supporting characters that feel developed, relevant and ultimately endearing by the end of the drama. Wei Jiu, the would-be villain, is hilarious in this show, and Su Yishui's disciples get their time to shine throughout the drama.

A pleasing OST and production round out a very satisfying watching experience. Although not earth-shatteringly novel as far as storytelling, this drama is nonetheless a beautifully crafted epic fantasy that deserves a place alongside my favorite xianxia dramas.

One of the best and most satisfying xianxias I have watched!

Most viewers who have seen this drama will agree that Love of the Divine Tree has been an amazing ride.

I have read the novel, and I appreciate the screenwriter 刘芳 Liu Fang's immense efforts to preserve as much of the novel as possible while updating the story for drama so that its more exciting and flows more logically.

I really can't nitpick on anything in this drama.
From the casting of Deng Wei as the perfect, breathing Su Yi Shui, to the fresh-faced ingénue Xiang Hanzhi as Mu Qingge and Xue Ranran, to every other cast ( except Medicine Immortal who is not as beautiful as he should have been - hahaha ), just watching these talented ensemble perform is a wonderful experience.

Next we have costumes that flow like fairy garments, designed by the very popular 易小雅 Yi Xiaoya. The sets designs combined with fake and actual scenery whenever they could, made for a very immersive and gorgeous scenery vibes we cannot get off a high tech cold LED screen.

Then the Visual Effects. Certainly it cannot compare to HBO's Game of Thrones level but to be fair, its really the best I have seen so far for a Cdrama. They really did their best with their budget. The aesthetics end result was pleasing and even amazing at times. They tried their best to bring the story to life.

As a director, 尹涛 Yin Tao really suits my aesthetic tastes. He knows how to direct and what to present. The finished drama feels sincere and well put together. Its truly 良心制作. I can consider it a masterpiece of xianxia.

OST, we have the veteran singers and some of these songs will be looping in our minds for a long time. They also appear in the drama subtly. My only complaint is the subs of the songs go almost to the middle of the screen and covers the actors faces. lol
AHEM when we are trying to watch them kiss, please relocate these annoying subs!

So far the most amazing thing this drama has achieved with me is, I did not fast forward but only rewind when I missed things.

Hope you will find this review helpful and experience this for yourself!
