Birth of a Beauty
It’s only 4 episodes into the show, but Birth of a Beauty had me hooked after the first episode. I’m simultaneously titillated, intrigued, and horrified. The whole plot of the show revolves around two people who got their hearts broken and want to get back with the ones they've lost by going to extremes. Our female lead Sa Ra (played by Han Ye Seul) was an overweight housewife who was unceremoniously discarded when her husband Kang Joon (played by Jung Gyu Woon) found someone else. That someone else is Chae Yeon (played by Wang Ji Hye) and she is the main love interest of our male lead Tae Hee (played by Joo Sang Wook).
So the two discarded people, Sa Ra and Tae Hee, make a deal to work together to get what they want. This includes, but is not limited to, an extreme (and I mean EXTREME) makeover of the female lead. She transforms from an overweight, never looked at, treated like dirt housewife into an object of extreme desire. And with the help of Tae Hee, she meets and starts seducing her husband… Yes, she is seducing her own husband without him even knowing it.
During this process you can see how the dynamic between Tae Hee and Sa Ra may (coughs delicately) change into something more than just a camaraderie because of their shared interest of getting back with the ones they love.
On top of that, there’s also some business/monetary/family intrigue starting up that needs to be solved. There are so many things going on and it’s a lot darker than I would have thought this drama would be based off of the first few episodes.
This show has an exceptionally fast pace and I hope that the producers will carry on with it but also keep the drama interesting without dragging on the plot after it has gained this speed. So far, it seems like the story will continue with the character development/unveiling and the shock factor. I was caught off guard a couple of times already by some of the plot twists. As of now, this drama seems to be pretty well written. It’s been keeping humor mixed extremely well with some pretty dark tones. This drama is fantastic at the moment and my fingers are crossed that it stays this way.
