2014 KDRAMA NOMINEES: WORST PARENTS

****WARNING: SPOILER ALERTS (READ AT YOUR OWN RISK)*****

If you’re a drama addict like me, then you know about the bad parents that pop up in a lot of kdramas. There are a bunch, and at first I was going to talk about all of the ones I’ve encountered. Although, looking back at past drama articles, I’ve seen some that have been mentioned before. So, I decided to concentrate on the ones I’ve seen this year.

For those who don’t know though, some of the worst parents in the earlier dramas mentioned are:

Shining Inheritance: Go Eun Sung’s stepmom Baek Seung Hee (Kim Mi Sook),

Boys Over Flowers: Gu Jun Pyo’s mom Kang Hee Soo (Lee Hye Young)

You’re So Beautiful: Hwang Tae Kyung’s mom Mo Hwa Ran (Kim Sung Ryung)

Anyway, I haven’t really seen that many k-dramas this year. I just haven’t had time, but here are some of the ones I’ve seen for this year.

THE NOMINEES:

BRIDE OF THE CENTURY: MOMS

Ma Jae Ran (played by Shin Eun Jung) Jang Yi Kyung’s mom

Kim Myung Hee (played by Kim Seo Ra) Choi Kang Joo’s mom

I really liked this drama, but these two moms drove me up the wall!

Ma Jae Ran, Jang Yi Kyung’s mom, is so greedy and so consumed with revenge, that she’s willing to kill Do Rim for her daughter. Kim Myung Hee, Choi Kang Joo’s mom, wasn’t as bad. She was just a bitter old lady, because her husband never forgot his first wife. At first, she was afraid that Yi Kyung’s mom will reveal her mom’s secret, but later on she was just like all the other rich moms, who thinks a poor girl doesn’t deserve their sons.

HIGH SCHOOL - LOVE ON: MOM

Ahn Ji Hye (played by Choi Soo Rin) Shin Woo Hyun’s mom & Hwang Sung Yeol’s stepmom

Ugh…I know this drama is still ongoing. It’s 15 episodes in and I still can’t find a redeeming quality in her. I understand that she had to leave her son because of her mother-in-law, but when her mother-in-law begged her to take care of him, she should have said yes. Denying your own son, and trying to be a good stepmom to your stepson is just hypocritical. You knew your son was alone after his grandma died, and yet you did nothing. And to top it off, you ask the one person who stayed with your son to leave him, because it hurts your stepson? You are off your rocker lady. (Sorry, she just drives me batty.) I don’t know if she’ll redeem herself in the end but as of now I truly hate her.

MARRIAGE NOT DATING: MOM & DAD

Shin Bong Hyang (played by Kim Hae Sook) Gong Gi Tae’s mom

Gong Soo Hwan (played by Kim Kap Su) Gong Gi Tae’s dad

One of my favorite dramas of 2014, this is a must see for those who haven’t seen it yet. In the beginning, I really hated Gong Gi Tae’s mom. She was manipulative, but not in an obvious way. I guess you can describe it as manipulative, but in a classy way? I can’t really describe it. The way she tortured Jang Mi from time to time really annoyed me, but as the story progressed and they showed why she did what she did, I started to admire her. She really just wanted what’s best for her son. In the end, she redeemed herself. Gong Gi Tae’s dad on the other hand is a tool. He is just a selfish bastard, who blatantly cheated on his wife, and expected his wife and family to keep quiet, and help him with his connections? I’m sorry but that is just plain wrong. Even to the very end, he expected his wife and family to stay with him and pretend to show everyone else a united front.

NOT SO BAD BUT NOT SO GREAT PARENTS

(THE RUNNERS UP):

ANGEL EYES: DAD

Yoon Jae Beom (played by Jeong Jin Yeong) Yoon Soo Wan’s dad

He wasn’t really a truly bad dad. He was misled. He thought he killed someone, but the truth was he didn’t. I didn’t like the way he went about Soo Wan & Dong Joo though. He shouldn’t have let Soo Wan think Dong Joo left without a word, and he should have accepted them right away when they admitted their relationship. What is it about parents thinking it’s right to separate their kids from the one they truly love? I mean, you can see that it’s killing them to be apart, why torture them that way.

TROT LOVERS: DAD

Choi Myung Shik (played by Kang Nam Gil) Choi Chun Hee’s dad

Another one who wasn’t all that bad. His main problem is neglect. Why is it that if they go into debt, they always run away? Do they think the debt goes away when they leave? No, it stays, and the ones left behind, are the ones who end up paying. I understand the guilt, and the shame, but he shouldn’t have left his oldest daughter to deal with the loan sharks.

Ok, those are my nominees for the worst parent award. There are probably more, but I don’t really want for this article to be a novel. Leave your comments below on who should be included on this list. Maybe I’ll write another one.
