Currently Watching: Love & π
After finishing the drama Misty last month, I have been craving another gripping drama with a strong female lead, filled with intelligent writing and intrigue. I scoured through MyDramaList, using different tags and searches (and different combinations) including: mature, romance, drama, desperately trying to find a drama I have not seen that could match or come close to the wonder that was Misty. Then one day, someone added The Good Wife as a recommendation for those who like Misty, claiming it had similar vibes and methods of storytelling. You have never seen anyone click the “Plan to Watch” button as quickly as I did after reading that comment! And thus, I began my journey of watching The Good Wife.
The Good Wife is a remake of the 2009 American show under the same name. In this drama, Jun Do Yeon plays Kim Hye Kyung, a woman who has been a housewife and mother for the past thirteen years while her husband, Lee Tae Joon (Yoo Ji Tae), has been a successful and influential prosecutor. However, the tides turn quickly when Lee Tae Joon is caught in an infidelity scandal that is broadcasted on national television. It escalates even further as he is also accused of political corruption and subsequently arrested. After this, Kim Hye Kyung decides that she must return to her career as a lawyer after her 13-year hiatus, in order to provide for her family.
5 Reasons to Watch
1. Strong Female Lead
One of the greatest aspects of this drama is the character of Kim Hye Kyung. She is smart, strong, and determined. After initially being timid and apprehensive about returning to work after many years off, she grows more and more confident as the series progresses. It is amazing to see the character growth and development she showcases and how her experiences affect her and cause her to have such strong convictions and incredible inner strength.
2. The Acting
This show has a plethora of incredible actors, even in its cameos. Jun Do Yeon is incredible as the lead and can show an unbelievable range of emotions even in her subtleties. Yoo Ji Tae is amazing. I have seen him in such a variety of roles and he NEVER disappoints. I am currently on episode 5 and I still cannot figure him out. Is he being framed? Is he actually a bad guy? I do not know yet but I am intrigued. It is truly a testament to his acting ability.
Even the supporting characters are great with Lee Won Keun playing an ambitious youngster trying to get his foot in the door at the law firm, Nana as the bisexual badass researcher who is hiding many secrets, and Yoon Kye Sang who plays the caring university friend and boss of Kim Hye Kyung, but may not be as sweet as he appears.
3. The Good, the Bad, and the Messy
One of the reasons this drama is so unique is that it is not predictable and dry. What is good? What is bad? What would you be willing to do in order to protect your family? This drama is complex in the way it showcases ethical dilemmas people face and the way they can make people change. They can cross lines they never could have imagined and come out the other side wondering, “What have I become?”
Life is not black and white. And this drama demonstrates some of its darker sides, all the while staying true to its characters.
4. The Intrigue
But most of all, the main reason to watch this is the intrigue. This is intelligent writing that will keep you interested and wanting to know more. It has an amazing way of storytelling similar to that of Misty and Signal that has a blend of individual cases and stories mixed into a much larger ongoing story. This will keep you utterly engrossed and captivated.
5. Bonus: Binge-Watching
A bonus is that the show aired in 2016, meaning it can be BINGE-WATCHED. No agonizing week-long wait for new episodes to air. You can watch it all whenever you want! (It takes some of the pain away from waiting for more episodes of Something in the Rain to air… some… but not all… that show is fire!)
Definitely take a chance with this show, I am currently loving it and hopefully, it will keep this momentum up! *fingers crossed*
