After thorough discussion, SBS decided to permanently not air the drama "Joseon Exorcist"

On March 26, SBS released their official statement regarding the cancellation of  "Joseon Exorcist" that got into hot water due to claims of historical inaccuracies..

"SBS acknowledges the seriousness of this situation and we have concluded to permanently cancel the airing of the drama. We have also cancelled the contract for the broadcasting rights of "Joseon Exorcist."

SBS has already paid most of the broadcasting rights for "Joseon Exorcist" and the production company has finished filming 80 percent of the drama.

Although we are concerned regarding scheduling gaps in the programming and financial losses, SBS feels a a heavy sense of responsibility as a terrestrial broadcaster and have decided to cancel the drama "Joseon Exorcist."

"Joseon Exorcist" premiered their first two episodes on March 22 and 23. Instead of gaining praise from viewers, they were heavily criticized for distorting history. In the first episode, the drama received strong viewership with 5.7 and 8.9 percent. But in the second episode, they experienced a serious drop in ratings. Viewers voiced how they were uncomfortable with the way the drama distorted the history of Korea and used Chinese styled props and food. This is the first time that a drama was suspended due to protests from viewers in just two episodes.

Before the official cancellation of "Joseon Exorcist,” SBS explained their side of the matter. Viewers were not convinced and they filed complaints and petitions through the Korea Communications Standards Commission and other platforms. All of their sponsors also cancelled their support of the drama. Eventually, SBS has decided to not air the drama.

"Joseon Exorcist" was directed by Shin Kyung Soo and the script was written by Park Kye Ok who previously  worked on "Mr. Queen" that had its own historical controversy late last year. Apparently the writer of the original novel that Mr. Queen was based off of,  had previously supposedly made some offensive remarks regarding Korean culture and people as well as mocking Korean history. The production team issued a public apology stating that they had not been aware of the remarks.

The Joseon Exorcist starred Jang Dong Yoon, Park Sung Hoon, Kam Woo Sung, Kim Dong Jun, Jung Hye Sung, Min Jin Woong, and more.
