films watched in 2023

i've been watching more (mainly japanese) films this year so i made a list
-
1. Maison Ikkoku Apartment Fantasy
Japanese Movie - 1986
probably would be more enjoyable for someone whose read the manga
-
2. Vengeance is Mine
Japanese Movie - 1979
-
3. Tengoku ni ichiban chikai shima
Japanese Movie - 1984
i enjoyed the tone and the japanese immigrants she meets. it reminded me of a few french books i read in school where a kid/teen goes off on their own to learn their life isn't actually that hard. lol
-
4. The Vampire Doll
Japanese Movie - 1970
-
5. Running Out Of Time
Hong Kong Movie - 1999
had a lot of fun, was worth the price to rent it. the sightly homoerotic cat-and-mouse theme of this is unbeatable
-
6. Rebels of the Neon God
Taiwanese Movie - 1992
i liked the setting of the flooded apartment, worked well as theme that carried through the whole thing. i also liked the sequence where the MC is stuck in an arcade all night. pretty good. (the gay aspect was more subtle than i expected)
-
7. Police Story 2
Hong Kong Movie - 1988
-
8. The Man Who Stole the Sun
Japanese Movie - 1979
loved it
-
9. The Heroic Trio
Hong Kong Movie - 1993
-
10. Love Massacre
Hong Kong Movie - 1981
-
11. Throw Away Your Books, Rally in the Streets
Japanese Movie - 1971
very avant-garde
-
12. The Bad Sleep Well
Japanese Movie - 1960
-
13. Kazoku Game
Japanese Movie - 1983
-
14. Cure
Japanese Movie - 1997
-
15. Sumo Do, Sumo Don't
Japanese Movie - 1992
fun sports team movie, had me convinced i know how to sumo wrestle
-
16. Evil Dead Trap
Japanese Movie - 1988
epic
-
17. Typhoon Club
Japanese Movie - 1985
i wish i had known about the extended attempted rape sequence beforehand, i didn't see it coming so i got a little upset...
-
18. Under the Flag of the Rising Sun
Japanese Movie - 1972
-
19. Vive L'Amour
Taiwanese Movie - 1994
i'm enjoying tsai ming-liang's filmography.. you can tell what elements he likes working with
-
20. The Most Dangerous Game
Japanese Movie - 1978
-
21. Cats on Park Avenue
Japanese Movie - 1989
-
22. Lost and Found
Hong Kong Movie - 1996
i like quaint romance films similar to this but i wasn't really sold on this one. im not a takeshi kaneshiro fan per se but the moments where he was on screen were really the most enjoyable.
-
23. Battle Royale
Japanese Movie - 2000
re-watch, director's cut
-
24. Secret
Taiwanese Movie - 2007
this film should've had more practical piano playing, i wouldn't complain if there was a second "duel" out of nowhere
-
25. Flirting Scholar
Hong Kong Movie - 1993
-
26. Truck Rascals: No One Can Stop Me
Japanese Movie - 1975
-
27. Begging for Love
Japanese Movie - 1998
wow ! difficult to make it through those two sequences where the girl has to suffer, but i really latched onto terue as a character. and that actress doing a double-role did an excellent job
-
28. School in the Crosshairs
Japanese Movie - 1981
"the island closest to heaven" had a great location setting, "hausu" was full of inventive effects and saccharine music cues... this obayashi doesn't have a complicated plot, but i was really not invested in it. another film probably better enjoyed by the original novels's fans (or maybe there's a more popular adaptation?). i liked the boy (koji)
-
29. The Beast to Die
Japanese Movie - 1980
the photoshoot with matsuda yusaku holding onto the woman in the red dress was a stroke of genius because every cover/poser from it looks so gorgeous that it convinced me to watch it
-
30. Cutie Honey
Japanese Movie - 2004
after cobalt claw is defeated it stops being the best tokusatsu film of all time. i understand that with magical girl shows a big focus is the deep friendship bonds between the girls and them gaining power from that but i feel like after it started to focus on that aspect, almost every other charming factor was taken away
-
31. The Forbidden Kingdom
Chinese Movie - 2008
