2021 Watchlist
This will be the list of shows I watch this year. I'll put a brief review of each one with each program.
-
1. The Dog I Encountered
Korean TV Show - 2020, 4 episodes
The dogs are adorable, but their stories are heartbreaking. It's so nice to see them with good homes at the end of the show (except 2 who are in process it said).
-
2. Shanai Marijjihani
Japanese Drama - 2020, 7 episodes
Very sweet show. Basically a "Married at first sight" type show and it's fun to watch the couple learn to love each other. Cute leads and love that they actually talk about their issues. There are a few "daydream" scenes that I totally could have done without because they were SO cringey , but overall, a good show.
-
3. Kekkon Aite wa Chusen de
Japanese Drama - 2018, 8 episodes
I really enjoyed this show. It's a tiny bit slow in parts but very well written and quite different than what you'd expect in a show about arranged marriages. It's well done indeed!
-
4. Kiss Me at the Stroke of Midnight
Japanese Movie - 2019
Very cute and sweet movie. Slight case of noble idiocy, but thankfully doesn't last long in the show.
-
5. Perfect World
Japanese Movie - 2018
Really good movie. I enjoyed it and I liked the leads together. I don't think I've seen them before and I look forward to more from them. I especially liked how they were very open about issues of dating in a situation like the one portrayed. That it could be lovely, but also challenging. Very well done.
-
6. Missions of Love
Japanese Movie - 2018
Rewatch: This is a decent movie. The poster is quite misleading as it's not a scene in the movie at all...which is a good thing because the movie is quite pure overall. I love that about these types of movies. It follows a girl trying to figure out just what love is. The part that is most frustrating is that she uses blackmail to do so. Therefore, it's not really a positive way to learn about love even if it turns out ok in the end.
-
7. Your Lie in April
Japanese Movie - 2016
SPOILER ALERT!!! SPOILER ALERT!!! STOP NOW IF YOU DON'T WANT SPOILERS!!!
I don't typically enjoy shows that don't have a full on happy ending, but this one was really good and though the ending wasn't "happy", it also wasn't horribly sad somehow. The actors/actresses all did a wonderful job and I really enjoyed the story even though the twist at the end was unexpected. Even so, I would recommend this show, but if you cry easily, you might need some tissues at the end.
-
8. Best Mistake Season 2
Korean Drama - 2020, 16 episodes
Cute, but a bit slow. The antagonist was mostly just frustrating. The friendships are such a big part of the charm of this show, but the antagonist character caused them not to shine as much as they could have. However the side character of the FL's upstairs neighbor was a hoot and I liked him a lot.
-
9. Best Mistake
Korean Drama - 2019, 15 episodes
REWATCH: I wanted to revisit this season after watching the 2nd one. This one is much better and I'm so glad I watched it again.
-
10. Melo Not Solo
Korean Drama - 2020, 8 episodes
Cute Mini drama. I was unfamiliar with most of the leads, but I liked them a lot. The four main leads had great chemistry together. Would have been awesome if they had been together more, but it's a short drama so there wasn't a lot of time for that in the story.
-
11. Itazura na Kiss: Love in Tokyo
Japanese Drama - 2013, 16 episodes
REWATCH: Such a cute show and a fast watch since I can ff whatever I want since I've seen it before.
-
12. Itazura na Kiss: Love In Tokyo 2
Japanese Drama - 2014, 16 episodes
REWATCH: Can't watch the first one and not rewatch the sequel. :-)
-
13. Er is iets met die 1 procent
Korean Drama - 2016, 16 episodes
REWATCH: This is about my 7th time through this drama. I'll probably watch it again in a few months. It's always my happy place.
-
14. Today's Kira-kun
Japanese Movie - 2017
REWATCH: Such a sweet movie. I highly recommend.
-
15. The Black Devil and the White Prince
Japanese Movie - 2016
REWATCH: It had been a long time, so I decided to watch this show again. Seriously in need of teaching the male lead the meaning of the word no in this movie. There are some real issues with the relationship being portrayed, so it's not a good example of romantic relationship at all. The lead is awful and then nice and then awful and then nice. It's just not ok. Thankfully at the end of the show the FL gets some guts and stands up for herself which is the only saving grace for the relationship.
-
16. Ware Schoonheid
Korean Drama - 2020, 16 episodes
I enjoyed this drama. I wasn't a fan of all the characters, but the story was good and the main actors/actresses were really fun to watch. The younger brother grew on me over time too. It would be fun to see a spin off series of the younger brother and his girlfriend. The plot point of the FL not wanting people to see her bare face was ok at first, but then got difficult to deal with after awhile. However, once it was no longer in use the story improved dramatically. Overall, I liked it a lot.
-
17. Run On
Korean Drama - 2020, 16 episodes
Loved the Lead Couple and I liked the drama overall, but had several issues with parts of the story and characters. I wrote a full review on this site if you want to know more.
-
18. You Drive Me Crazy
Korean Special - 2018, 4 episodes
REWATCH: I think I enjoyed this a bit better this time. I did ff parts though, so that might be why. It's cute and short.
-
19. ISAC: Hall of Fame
Korean TV Show - 2021, 2 episodes
Since I haven't seen many of the competitions this was a really fun way to see what the various events are like. It was such a cool compilation to watch.
-
20. Fall in Love at First Kiss
Taiwanese Movie - 2019
I enjoyed this so much. I've seen so many incarnations of this story, but this will be a favorite because of it's fast moving story and how it allows the ML to visibly fall for the FL throughout the movie. He's also not as cold for as long in this version. I loved it so much.
-
21. Watashi ga Motete Dousunda
Japanese Movie - 2020
Just...no. Strange plot that just got stranger. I read the synopsis and thought it was an odd plot, but thought it would probably be like most Jmovies and not really be quite what it seemed at first. And it was different, but it was even stranger. Had to ff several parts and it wasn't even that long of a movie.
-
22. You and I
Korean Movie - 2020
This was a cute movie and I really enjoyed it except for the ridiculous bad guy.
-
23. A Love So Beautiful
Korean Drama - 2020, 24 episodes
So so good! I really liked the original version, but this was even better in my opinion. I'm about to post a review on the show page if you want a more detailed review.
-
24. Oversize Love
Chinese Movie - 2020
This show was problematic on several levels. The actors & actresses all did a fine job, but the story was extremely lacking. I don't know if it was written that way or edited poorly, but it felt very odd. The ML and FL were supposed to be super close, but your never really get to see them be that way too much...at least not where you'd see their chemistry shine. Part of that could be that it was a movie so there just isn't a lot of time, but still. Also the whole "Alice in Wonderland" part of the story was just frustrating for me. I ended up FF parts of that.
SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER...you've been warned.
It has a happy ending, but even that is set up strangely. You never see the leads kiss or even hug...I'm not sure they even hold hands. It's like they are friends that get married eventually. Which is just very strange. -
25. Sweet 18
Korean Drama - 2004, 16 episodes
REWATCH: I had seen this drama several years ago, but decided to do a quick rewatch, since I could FF whatever I didn't want to watch again. It's cute. It's cringy at times and the FL character is VERY immature, but it's still a decent watch considering the age of the show.
-
26. Mr. Perfect and Miss Almost
Chinese Drama - 2020, 24 episodes
Super cute story. Must admit I FF through about everything not the leads, but that had more to do with my own impatience than the characters. The side characters are cute as well. I just wasn't interested in being invested in anything but the main plot...literally didn't even care about the parts of the story with the ML and FL if it wasn't about their relationship. Again, had nothing to do with the writing or anything. I was not in a frame of mind to care about anything but the relationship between the leads so that is why I FF so much. Others who watched it all LOVED every part. I might have too, if I had given those parts more of a chance. Was in the mood for a cute romance and that is what this delivered.
-
27. Kuragehime
Japanese Drama - 2018, 10 episodes
I'm not sure how I keep coming across the dramas that have unusual plots, but this one indeed fits that mold. It's got some good points. There is a strong theme of friendship and being able to follow your dreams, but there isn't really a traditional character anywhere in the drama. There are so many eccentric characters that it's just a bit much at times. The best thing is that though they all remain eccentric, they all do grow and change a bit to become more mature and productive parts of society and that is nice to see.
-
28. My Secret Star
Korean Drama - 2020, 5 episodes
ADORABLE!!! This will probably be a show I rewatch several times. It's cute, it's short, and the cast is fun to watch together. I mean, what else is needed to make me smile. :-)
-
29. All Fixed Up in Seoul
Korean TV Show - 2021, 3 episodes
Such a cool show. The renovations were amazing!
-
30. Let's BTS
Korean TV Show - 2021, 1 episode
Such a good show. Was fun to see BTS being interviewed and interacting with each other as well as the hosts.
-
31. Law of the Jungle - Pioneers
Korean TV Show - 2021, 5 episodes
I really enjoyed this season of Law of the Jungle. It was a good cast that worked well together.
-
32. My Small Indeed Fortunate
Chinese Drama - 2021, 28 episodes
Such an adorable show. I really liked the characters. There were a few angsty parts, but mostly they are short lived and (SPOILER) the leads are allowed to stay together after they get together so that is THE BEST!
-
33. L♥DK: Two Loves Under One Roof
Japanese Movie - 2019
Cute movie. Couple issues with some overly forceful moments with the guys when they are flirting with the girl, but overall I like the show a lot.
-
34. Are You Ready? Hey You Girl!
Japanese Movie - 2018
Another very enjoyable movie. The cast is all really good. My only complaint is (SPOILER) the leads don't really get together until the last couple minutes. I wish we had been able to see them together as a couple more.
-
35. Writing Your Fate
Korean Drama - 2021, 10 episodes
SPOILERS HERE!!!!
First off, I didn't really like the premise with all the gods everywhere. Just...no.
But the plot development was interesting and the acting was good.
I did NOT like the ending. While it's not a horribly sad ending, it's also not a happy one and it left the leads adrift with no real ending at all...so...no. I didn't rate it lower for a couple reasons:
1) It really is well put together from a story arch perspective and the characters are well written and acted.
2) I gave 6.5's to "Itaewan Class" and "It's Ok to not Be Okay" so since I found this show less frustrating that those dramas, I figured I had to give it at least a 7. The ending alone though I would give about a 5...just not ok in my book to end a drama that way. But that's my personal preference. -
36. Kiseki: Sobito of That Day
Japanese Movie - 2017
This movie was a bit slow, but I found the story of the band very interesting. So unique and the music was really good too.
-
37. Match of the Century: AI vs. Human
Korean TV Show - 2021, 5 episodes
MDL has this at 10 episodes, but only 5 were ever released on Kocowa. I waited for the others a long time, but no other came, so I decided it must be complete and the episode number is incorrect or counted differently on MDL. It's very interesting. Some of the parts are more interesting than others, but all of it was different than you'd expect.
-
38. Boys’ Mind Camp
Korean TV Show - 2020, 12 episodes
Such a good program. I enjoyed it a lot. I especially liked that there were professionals evaluating the participants.
-
39. NCT Life: DREAM in Wonderland
Korean TV Show - 2020, 12 episodes
Super cute show. Always fun to watch idols having fun.
-
40. Contract Love From Today
Korean Drama - 2021, 15 episodes
Short and sweet. I really liked it.
-
41. Kingdom
Korean TV Show - 2021, 10 episodes
To be fair...the competition aspect of this show was really not important to me. I LOVED watching the groups interact and cheer for each other. My favorite part of every episode was watching the groups react to each other's performances. Because the finale was LIVE, that was not possible, so for me, the final show was a bit of a dud. The performances were cool and I enjoyed the final "behind the scenes" stories of each team, but the LIVE part was too drawn out and much of the fun was gone because you couldn't see the groups reacting to each other.
-
42. Untitled KBS Variety Show Project
Korean TV Show - 2021, 10 episodes
Fun show. Could have done without the opening bits for each episode (actually fast forwarded a lot of those). But the interviews with the stars and the people living in the stars former homes was great fun. PLUS the renovations were amazing too!
-
43. Toshi no sa Kon
Japanese Drama - 2020, 8 episodes
Cute show with characters that actually talk to each other and are open out their relationship issues. Leads who are supportive and trusting of each other. The age gap is a bit much and the reality of the issues connected with that long term that isn't really taken into consideration as much as if it had been a longer series, but still, it's not ignored and is realistically talked about.
-
44. Hello Mr. Gu
Chinese Drama - 2021, 30 episodes
Overall, I liked the drama. However, there are seriously WAY too many misunderstandings and I ended up FF through a lot of them because I was so over them.
-
45. So I Married an Anti-Fan
Korean Drama - 2021, 16 episodes
Such a good drama. I really liked the lead characters and seriously disliked the 2nd Leads until the last couple episodes. I loved that the lead characters trust and talk to each other. That adds so much the the relationship aspect.
-
46. Boys' Mind Camp
Korean TV Show - 2021, 12 episodes
I really like this show and the concept for this show. This was the 2nd season and it was great to see a new team interact. NCT Dream was great. The only test I wish they would eliminate was the one where they answer questions for food. It's just uncomfortable to watch some not be able to eat.
-
47. Nee Sensei, Shiranai No?
Japanese Drama - 2019, 6 episodes
REWATCH: This is a cute and fun show that portrays an unusual relationship dynamic, but also shows how if there is good communication and understanding, the relationship can grow. Though to be honest, if this were real life, I'm not sure it would last if the FL character didn't change at least a little. You can't be oblivious to everything when working forever.
-
48. K-Bob Star
Korean TV Show - 2020, 18 episodes
This is one of my favorite variety shows. No games making the idols "win" their food. Just feeding them and seeing them so happy. It's such a treat to watch.
-
49. Love Phantom
Japanese Drama - 2021, 10 episodes
Cute, but the couple moved too fast. Went from strangers to living together in about two episodes. I love when the couple is together quickly, but there was no need for them to be sleeping together right away.
-
50. Anyways Going to Work!
Korean TV Show - 2021, 32 episodes
I love this show so much. It was so fun to see so many jobs and what all they entailed.
-
51. Late Night Cafe
Korean Special - 2020, 1 episode
Short but interesting.
-
52. Hip Up Hit Up
Korean Special - 2021, 1 episode
This was typical of the "second" of any trilogy. I didn't like it as well, but it wasn't bad. It's important in that it gives information that helps tie all the stories together. It's a decent show...totally worth watching and necessary to follow the 3rd season better.
-
53. The Curious Stalker
Korean Special - 2021, 1 episode
I liked this one the best of the trilogy. Possibly because I enjoyed the story, or the fact that I'm a fan of Doyoung, but mostly because it tied together the other stories. It actually made me want a season 4 to see more of the story.
-
54. NCT Life in Osaka
Korean TV Show - 2017, 21 episodes
REWATCH: Kocowa is adding some of these seasons and I'm enjoying them. :-)
-
55. EXO's Ladder: Season 1
Korean TV Show - 2018, 40 episodes
Very fun! Not a fan of the ladder game for food, but still fun.
-
56. The Ingenuity of the House Husband
Japanese Drama - 2021, 10 episodes
Super short (you can watch the whole series in around 25 min) and nice for a drama break. Simple episodes with just basically life skills shown. I enjoyed it.
-
57. Oshi no Ojisama
Japanese Drama - 2021, 11 episodes
Cute drama. I liked the friendships and the characters.
SPOILER: It would have been better had they let the leads get together before the end of the drama...that was too long to wait and you had zero opportunity to see if their relationship would really work. -
58. Hospital Playlist 2
Korean Drama - 2021, 12 episodes
Such a good drama. For real...so good. Maybe the best depiction of friendships anywhere.
My only complaint (and it's small, because I gave the show a 10) is that it would have been nice to see the couples interact a bit more after they got together. The only couple that your really got to see how the relationship would continue was the one that began at the end of the 1st season. Everyone else, you assume they would do well and you see small snippets of the relationships, but you really don't get to see them overcome any sort of issues together as couples. So, there's that. -
59. Koi wa Tsuzuku yo Doko Made mo
Japanese Drama - 2020, 10 episodes
I enjoyed this drama. The FL is a little annoying at times, but not in an unbearable way. It's simply the way her character is written. The ML is a bit too reserved in a similar fashion that the FL is a bit over the top. All in all though, very cute!
-
60. Sweet Sweet
Chinese Drama - 2021, 22 episodes
Super cute drama. I enjoyed it. However, the end is a bit odd. Not a "bad" ending, but a bit confusing as to what actually happens with a particular choice for one of the characters. Wish it had been a bit more clear. Even so, very sweet drama.
-
61. Dose Mo Nige Rarenai
Japanese Drama - 2021, 9 episodes
I really enjoyed this JDrama. So very cute.
SPOILER ALERT!!!!!!
My only complaint was at the end of the drama, when the ML confesses to the FL, he does so by basically propositioning her and then sleeping with her. I'm not a fan of unmarried characters sleeping together, but this was especially annoying because at the beginning of the drama he is basically portrayed as a guy that sleeps with a lot of women (though we aren't told if that is actually true). So it felt like they were tossing all the growth he'd made as a human who was learning to see the world differently. Even though they do get married later and he did indeed truly love the FL, it still just really felt like a poor character choice considering the earlier conversations.
-
62. 5-ji Kara 9-ji Made
Japanese Drama - 2015, 10 episodes
I had many issues with this drama and ff many parts. The ML character was almost too stiff, but he was still likable. The FL character was mean at first and would be worrying about stuff that didn't matter at all (should I go on a date or not?) She gets better, and her overall character was somewhat interesting and the actress was good...there was just something about her character than you wanted to talk some sense into her. The grandmother was a truly unlikable character and the FL's best friend was exceedingly annoying at times. There were good things, but just not enough to not make me ff.
-
63. Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha
Korean Drama - 2021, 16 episodes
This was a cute drama. There were some parts I found annoying (mostly stuff the FL would do), but not so much that it was too bothersome. Honestly, if I were early in my drama watching I would have probably given it at least a 9 or 9.5. But now certain things bother me. Cutesy acts and characters who are indecisive or don’t communicate well are frustrating and this drama has at least small doses of all of those. The cast all does a great job though andit’s definitely worth watching.
-
64. The Raincoat Killer: Chasing a Predator in Korea
Korean Special - 2021, 3 episodes
Very interesting docuseries
-
65. The Oppa of Tteokbokki House
Korean TV Show - 2021, 8 episodes
So many cool stories shared in this show. I very much enjoyed it.
