I LOVE this show so much and I NEED a second season.

This is my first review here so I'm not sure how to go about this... But I LOVED this show! A lot!

I finally got to see post-military service Ji Chang Wook shine in a show! As someone who fell into the kdrama rabbit hole and loved his shows when he was in the military, I was kind of disappointed with his last two outings but OhMyGod he brought his A-Game. I didn't watch Arthdal Chronicles so I loved seeing Kim Ji Won return on my screens with such a great role. I absolutely adore the whole cast and have enjoyed all of their previous performances so that added to my enjoyment.

For the uninitiated, the show follows a mockumentary style filming format, kind of reminiscent of The Office, but instead of a workplace, it is about the love lives of individuals in the city. To no one's surprise, our main cast is participating in this and their lives are all somehow connected. The 30-minute episode length with the new editing and filming format is a refreshing detour from conventional romantic dramas but still brings on all the feels!

I loved all the couples, even the extra fourth one in the bonus 17th episode. Ji Chang Wook and Kim Ji Won look great together and their chemistry is off the charts! On another level! Kim Min Seok and So Ju Yeon are so cute individually and even more so together! Han Ji Eun and Ryu Kyung Soo's characters have an unconventional relation but they make it work so well!
Janet Suh's opening theme song and all the other OSTs were perfect for this show.

I just finished the show, I loved it, and I know that I'll miss the whole dynamic and I'll definitely come back to it.
I need a second season, if you finish it, trust me, you will too!

I had fun, but I'm biased.

Disclaimer: I'm not a huge fan of historical settings or adventure films and I watched this solely for the cast. I was excited for Sehun's film debut and I really like Soobin, Hyo Joo, Ha Neul, and Kwang Soo and enjoyed their previous performances.

It was a fun watch! I had some actual laugh out loud moments. A bit random with plot progression, but I liked it. The action choreography was pretty good. The acting was on point. The CGI was also a B+, it wasn't the best but it's not bad.

Sehun's character doesn't speak much but he's doing his job quietly and serving visuals. We stan. Soobin's character fell in love at first sight when she was brought on board. We relate. They end up together and their little moments are adorable ( wish we had more).

Han Hyo Joo and Kang Ha Neul had great banter and chemistry in the start when they are battling for ultimate control as a pirate captain and bandit leader. The pirate captain FL wins and our bandit leader ML has been whipped since the start so he accepts and goes along with the arrangement. They have their fair share of bonding and at the end, Hyo Joo seals it with a kiss.

Kang Ha Neul had a brief backstory that wasn't explored but he knew the villain Kwon Sang Woo beforehand and that whole arc needed more explanation and time.

Since the start, the movie was eventful, we just dived into the conflict with some text onscreen to prompt us. Not the best for an international audience who might not know the historical eras.

The leads' backstory and more screentime for Sehun and Soobin would've been great. Since this story is set at the end of Goryeo and the start of Joseon - some people/places only mentioned via text on screen could do better with narration.

Giving it a biased 9. (I guess objectively for me it would be an 8). If the story had been a little fleshed out, it would've objectively been a 9 but currently, it kinda feels like a chronology of events rather than a full story since so much happened in 2 hours and there were so many characters whose arcs weren't fully explored. But as I already mentioned, the cast and their performances propelled it towards a 9 because I’m biased.

Massive Disappointment

I had started this show despite its stereotypical nature to watch actors I had liked in their previous outings as they starred in a breezy rom-com when all the other ongoing shows I was watching were all dealing with darker and sadder topics.

Cut to the opening week where our predictably grumpy writer male lead gets hit by a truck of doom sees an angel of sorts, forgets about it and proceeds to move in with our seemingly plucky actress female lead. All goes well, the chemistry is cute, and voila! unnecessary second lead for a gratuitous love triangle. m
Knowing about the love triangle from the posters and the promos did not discount the fact that it was an unneeded addition of an overused cliche. Still, the light comedy and the cutesy atmosphere made up for the sad backstories of both leads in the parents' department and the needless complication in the loveline.

I had put up with superfluous plot twists and storylines till the halfway point solely because the leads were adorable in moments sprinkled throughout the episodes. But cut to week 5, the male lead hides his family problems and is totally aloof in ep9 and in ep 10 the aforementioned angel returns and tells our guy he will start disappearing in front of the love of his life ( we needed more moments between the leads for them to be the loves of their lives ughh) and completely vanish in 49 days. What a start to the second half of the show... not.

When it was time to hit play on ep11, I just couldn't do it. I didn't want to sit through an episode while pressing the skip button and not really liking anything. I wanted cohabitation shenanigans and syrupy romcom stuff, I expected a cliche breakup or whatever but this show gave us barely half an episode of Bi Soo and Joo In as an official couple before the path to their separation started. How does it even make sense?! At least let them be together for a while, give us some of the promised fun but nope.

They broke up towards the end of ep12 (shocker!) as suggested by a Twitter hashtag search which cemented my decision to drop it. I'd rather watch thrillers all days of the week than tear my hair out for a show that was supposed to be a source of low effort enjoyment.
