A Premise, A Promise, A Problem
I'll make it short - don't waste your time with this one.
In the wake of the last 2 dailies being back-to-back disasters (TLIYE & AOME), and a just concluded weekend drama that crashed & burned (TRHC), KBS tried to switch gears and tell us that the new daily was going to be full of fun and surprises: a wild and crazy ride was the promise. And on it surface, it sounded interesting as the premise of the show where exes become in-laws sounded potentially very funny.
But alas, there's the problem: The writers had no idea how to apply that premise to a script. The premise was nothing more than a talking point for KBS to try to lure back weary viewers, tired of mediocre & uninspired dramas.
This series SHOULD have worked. The female lead was the star of the last successful daily (BML, 2022) and was capable of playing an assertive, smart, tenacious woman. The supporting cast was full of veteran actors, all well-schooled in their craft. But something went horribly wrong here and we wound up with a series that once in every few weeks, would gift us with a clever funny scene, but otherwise just plodded along with nothing resembling the hilarity that was supposed to be presented. We got, instead, a dismal plot, full of holes and untapped potential, a story-line that made no sense time-wise, important events in the past that are barely mentioned, and an equally uninspired performance from the cast.
You can't fool veteran actors - they will perform up to the task as needed, but how can they make a silk purse out of the proverbial sow's ear? It became pretty evident that they were going thru the motions in the last third of the series. How they could screw up Nam SangJi's abilities as a FL boggles my mind. Ironically, the 2 best performances in the series are by the actresses that portrayed the supporting FLs - Lee HyoNa as HaYoung and Joo SaeByuk as EunAh. They were as terrific as SangJi was pedestrian.
This series COULD have been better, as the writers clearly had the potential to give us funny, touching, sweet scenes. But I can only attribute the lack of them on laziness on their part. This show needed a veteran, accomplished writer to go over the storyboard and rearrange the series correctly - focus the beginning of the show on the events of the past that dictated the actions of the elders later on. THEN, time-jump to the present, as was done successfully in BML. Then go back and figure out how to develop a comedic theme to the series - and eliminate the nonstop harpiness of the two mothers and their twisted characters. There was NOTHING funny about them.
Don't watch this show. You have better things to do with your time. And believe me, the cast and crew won't be using this pile of crap as a resume highlight anytime soon.
Shame on KBS for not only foisting this on us, but for adding salt to the wound by extending it for 10 more crappy episodes.
