The plot is not shockingly original but it is really good. One be especially thankful for the lack of heavy melodrama, yes there are some heartbreaking moments but you won't hear crying and violins in the backround in every episode after mid season, like you would with other kdramas. Then there are the comedy parts which are iconic. There is especially one scene which is made with such a amazing editing,acting,music...that one cannot forget. Finally, there are the moments of confusion, they are so haunting the viewer can vividly feel the character's agony, much like in shows like Doctor Who,Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency and Black mirror.and the music has a lot to do with that.
Last but not least,is the superb acting that makes all of this believable enough for the viewer to get absorbed in no time.I'm not going to lie,I had mixed feelings about Jung Kyung Ho when I was watching Missing 9,but his other works have completely changed my mind. And what can one say about Park Sung-woong,he is simply brilliant.
In other words...just watch it!I have watched a lot of tv shows so far and this is one of the best, not just korean best but in general. If you feel a little bored in the begining just wait the the character to go to 1988,this is where the fun begins ;)

This drama is in fact plain, but the life of regular college students is rarely too exciting.I like the premise and as a young adult at university I can relate.Things like having no motivation or unrequitded young love might seem way less dramatic from an outside perspective but when you're there your feelings change. What I didn't like was the female lead (I actually couldn't stand her) and how everyone treated Yuta.Although Takemoto Yuta character has a lot of screen time in this, all his friends seem to ingore his obvious bad mental state or the fact that their pranks only keep hurting his self esteem.I cannot say whether this a cultural thing in Japan for casual friends not to discuss very personal issues but after a point I didn't find this to be a positive image of friendship at all . Let me start by saying that my opinion is extremely unpopular but I still feel like leaving my thoughts on this.I was a complete jdrama virgin when I watched this and I almost didn't want to watch anything else from Japan after...thankfully,I did!Let me explain,if you are not into or used to physical comedy (like american comedy for example) this could seem wild to you.Actors over acting, characters behaving in insane manners, being too loud and having crazy facial expressions can be major cringe factors. The only scene I laughed at was the "I am not a homo" one,I suppose it's a classic. The story is actually ok,far fetched obviously but it is a drama after all.Overall,I do not recommend this as your first jdrama if you are like me. Unfortunately, despite the cast and the cool ending I read about (I enjoy dark/sad endings) I couldn't finish this.First of all,Ikuta's acting kind of spoiled the begining for me,since he does tend to overdo it whenever there's comedy envolved. As a result I his character was either acting like a clown or like a depressed murderer which I found strange and confusing in this particular story.Second and most important, the story was too boring with endless melo flashbacks of the same scene that I just felt like skipping all the time.Oguri on the other hand was a perfectly convicing member of the yakuza,so much so that I still have a hard time seeing him in other roles (it is more about the general look though and not just the acting). The shooting style was also the more natural type you'd expect from a jdrama, which is very refreshing coming from korean dramas but it wasn't enough to keep me on board.
