This is not a spoiler because you see this behavior within the first 20 minutes of the movie. According to this movie, being a “sassy girl” means that you physically abuse and put down your love interest. If he’s actually your love interest, that is. The relationship between these two characters is bewildering. While the male character is a complete cinnamon roll of cute, I have no idea what redeeming qualities the female is supposed to have beyond being pretty.
If the genders of the roles were reversed, there would be an outcry about the glamourization of an abusive relationship. Midway through the movie, you see some things that are supposed to make her a more sympathetic character but for me, it didn’t work. She was beyond unlikable, irredeemably so.
At the end, while you find out what her deal was, you never really find out if she is reformed. You only ever see *him* working on becoming a better person, which he did need to do. It was wholly unsatisfying to see the end of the movie with a HEA, loose strings tied up.
As I watched, I often wondered, how is this so highly rated? Is there a social disconnect that makes domestic abuse amusing when an attractive female does it? How is this considered a romance, at all? It shouldn’t be.
