" THE HEART OF FANGS OF FORTUNE: A JOURNEY THROUGH CHARACTERS, MYSTICISM, AND EMOTIONAL DEPTH" Fangs Of Fortune also known as " The Story of Mystics" or " The Big Dream Returns" , is a supernatural and mystical drama that follows the adventures of a group of people with unique talents and powers who come together to solve cases and uncover various mysteries. This drama features incredible action scenes, top-notch cinematography filmed in a gloomy and fantastical style that captures the mood perfectly, and strong performances from the cast, making it a standout in its genre.
As flashbacks in this drama were used, they really added layers to the story and helped show why the characters acted the way they did. It wasn’t just random moments thrown in they tied the past and present together, making the plot flow better and giving more meaning to the characters’ decisions and growth. For me, this worked well in the drama because it made everything feel connected, and the timing of those flashbacks was perfect, revealing just enough to keep me interested while also showing how their histories shaped who they became.
The comedic tones in the drama were also necessary, especially with how gloomy and depressing some of the characters’ situations were. Without those lighter moments, the story would have felt too heavy. The humor balanced it out and showed how the characters coped with everything going on, which made them feel more real to me. And honestly, the shift from comedy to something darker and more emotional hit harder because of that. It started out funny, but once the truths were revealed, the tone became intense and heartbreaking. The shifts felt natural, too, like they were preparing me for the heavy emotional impact later on. By the time things got angsty, it didn’t feel out of place is it felt like the natural progression of everything that had built up.
THE CHARACTERS / ACTING
Neo Hou as Zhu Yan (Full Name: Zhao Yuan Zhou)
Zhu Yan is a 34,000-year-old great demon who carried the weight of his past and was determined to die because of it. His character was deeply depressed and used comedy as a way to cope with his guilt and loneliness. After spending so many years in seclusion, he decided to search for the Bai Ze Token while helping the team uncover not only their pasts but also his own. As the journey progressed, Zhu Yan found peace through his growing bond with the team. The friendship, love, and camaraderie they shared turned into a connection so strong it felt like family to him. Despite being the most powerful character, Zhu Yan wasn’t just defined by his strength but also by the emotional vulnerability he revealed over time. The drama centered heavily around him, and even though some scenes were cut, his presence and impact never dimmed.
Neo Hou’s performance was absolutely brilliant. He brought so much life to Zhu Yan, capturing the comedic, action-packed, and emotional moments perfectly. His portrayal was so convincing that I felt every emotion whether he cried, laughed, or fought. He embodied the character in such a way that my words can’t fully do it justice. Neo Hou as Zhu Yan surprised me in the best way possible, and his performance left me in awe. He made me cry when Zhu Yan broke down and laugh during his lighthearted moments, showcasing incredible range.
Chen Duling as Wen Xiao
Wen Xiao is a mortal chosen as the Bai Ze Goddess to protect the people and wilderness. While she wasn’t written as the strongest physically, her character was far from weak. Wen Xiao had a heartbreaking past, and her dedication to waiting for Zhu Yan after their time together showed her strength and loyalty. She spent years researching demons to better understand them, as seen in the first episode, which set up her role as a key problem-solver in the group.
Wen Xiao was smart, mature, and the glue that held the team together. She felt like a mother figure to the group, offering encouragement and wisdom during tough moments. I did wish to see more of her in the final episodes, but overall, I was satisfied with her character arc. Her chemistry with Zhu Yan was subtle yet incredibly intense, and their interactions were filled with unspoken emotions and tension that left a lasting impression.
Chen Duling portrayed Wen Xiao so naturally that every scene with her felt impactful. She made me cry during her emotional moments and smile in her lighter ones. Her talent really shone through, especially in her portrayal of the demon side disguised by Ao Yin. She played it so convincingly that it felt like an extension of Wen Xiao rather than a separate character. This balance between vulnerability and strength, along with the ability to switch between a heroic and villainous aura, showed how talented she truly is.
Tian Jia Rui as Zhuo Yichen
Zhuo Yichen played an important role in this drama. He started out bound by his goal to kill the great demon Zhu Yan, but as he spent more time with the group and got to know Zhu Yan, his character began to change. ZYC was an upright character who stood firmly for what was right, but when he found himself in the same position as Zhu Yan, he finally understood him.
Tian Jia Rui portrayed his character really well. He showed great versatility, transitioning from a reserved, quiet demeanor to someone who experienced real growth. The way his character’s before-and-after was shown was done very well, and I appreciated his acting in this role.
Cheng Xiao as Pei Sijing
Pei Sijing started as a cold and distant character due to her past experiences with demons and her brother’s situation. However, as the story progressed, she began to open up. Pei Sijing is best described in one sentence: “cold on the outside, but warm at heart.”
Cheng Xiao portrayed her character in a very good way. It’s not easy to convincingly portray a cold character without coming off as flat, but she balanced it well. I loved her action scenes, and her role as an archer fit perfectly with the group dynamic. She handled both the emotional and fighting scenes excellently, and I really liked her performance in Fangs of Fortune.
YaNan as Li Lun
Li Lun was a lonely character who made the wrong choices because of how he viewed humans and his strong desire to protect the wilderness. His actions broke his friendships and turned him into a villain, but as the saying goes, “villains are not born but made.”
I appreciated that his character had development toward the end, even though he caused so much damage to the demon bureau and the people. His final decision helped the group when they needed it the most.
YaNan played this character very well. He wasn’t just a good-looking villain with no substance he showed the contrast between his happy times with friends and his darker side after becoming a villain. His acting was impressive, and I’m proud of his performance.
The Other Characters
I wish I could write longer for each character, but here’s a quick summary of two key members of the group:
Lester Lin as Bai Ju - Lester was phenomenal as Bai Ju. As a young actor, he showed a lot of potential and versatility. He played three parts: the comedic boy, the spy, and even an evil version of Li Lun, all of which were well-directed and well-acted. I truly believe he’s going to become one of the best Chinese actors someday.
Xu Zhen Xuan as Ying Lei - Ying Lei was such a comfort character for me. I loved his portrayal as the mountain god and his overall contribution to the group. He genuinely cared about the team and loved them all.
Xu Zhen Xuan did an amazing job as Ying Lei. His comedic moments brought so much light to the group and made me laugh a lot. He also did well in his fight scenes, and when it came to emotional moments, especially during that heart-wrenching choice he had to make, I cried so much for him.
Guest and Side Characters
All the characters, even the guest ones, played an important part in the story. From Aimi as Qing Geng, Zuo Ye as Fei, Zhang Miao Yi as E Shou the rabbit demon, and Ryan Cheng as Cheng Huang to Riley Wang as Ran Yi and Xiao Ran as Miss Qi, everyone’s performance was excellent. Lai Wei Ming, who played Pei Sijing’s brother, was another standout. I especially loved the sibling dynamic between Pei Sijing and her brother it felt natural and heartfelt.
ROMANCE AND CHARACTER DYNAMICS
The romance between Zhu Yan and Wen Xiao was delicate yet deeply impactful, reminding me of an “old married couple.” Their mutual understanding, words of encouragement, and sacrifices embodied the phrase, “What would you do for love?” Both answered in their unique ways, and their story has earned a place in my heart as a second Romeo and Juliet.
This drama also stood out with its subtle portrayal of relationships. From hints of BL and GL elements to the depiction of a polycule-like bond within the group, it offered layers of complexity. Wen Xiao, despite her physical frailty, wasn’t a weak or unnecessary addition to the plot or added due to censorship. Her character brought depth, warmth, and an essential perspective to the group dynamic.
CINEMATOGRAPHY AND OST
The cinematography in Fangs of Fortune was breathtaking. Every frame held purpose, allowing the emotions and thoughts of the characters to shine without excessive zoom-ins or unnecessary exaggerations. It gave space to interpret the story and characters’ struggles naturally, enhancing the overall experience.
The OST was equally masterful, amplifying the emotional and narrative depth of the series. Neo Hou’s “Yuanzhou’s Boy” (translation) and Liu Yu Ning’s “Unintentional Big Dream” were standout tracks, perfectly aligning with key moments like epic fight scenes or introspective character arcs. These songs added another layer to the storytelling, making each scene resonate deeply.

OVERALL THOUGHTS AND REFLECTION.
While Fangs of Fortune isn’t without its flaws, no drama is truly perfect. Despite minor mistakes, the story’s heart and intent shone through. The inclusion of characters like Lord Ying Long and Lord Bing Yi, portrayed by Neo Hou and Tian Jian Rui, respectively, enriched the narrative with a historical weight that complemented Zhu Yan and Yi Chen’s arcs beautifully.
The drama tackled themes of human nature, moral choices, and the balance between worldly desires and higher ideals. These elements, combined with intricate relationships and seamless directing, created an unforgettable experience. Fangs of Fortune reflected on the ugly realities of the world while marveling at the characters’ resilience and courage. One thing I have to say is the double standards for females, whether they are strong or weak, is so sad to see. No matter how they act, their choices and behaviors are often judged more harshly than those of males. It’s a frustrating pattern that highlights how women are held to different standards, no matter their strength or vulnerability.
The ending of Fangs of Fortune really pierced my heart, leaving me torn with emotions. As each character faced difficult choices, their struggles hit deeply, and I couldn’t help but cry. Even with the special episode that added something new, offering a glimpse of hope, the overall feeling was still bittersweet sad yet uplifting. It captured the weight of their journeys, and while I felt a sense of closure, it didn’t erase the heartache that lingered.
I am proud of all the cast hard work for this drama because it paid off well and it is was successful in it's own way, I do hope that one day we would have a reunion project with this amazing cast again.
For me, this was the most anticipated drama of the year, and it exceeded my expectations in ways I didn’t expect. It’s rare for a series to be both thought-provoking and entertaining, but Fangs of Fortune achieved just that. It is truly a gem that I will remember for a long time. I recommend this drama to anyone who likes fantasy dramas with poetic dialogues and a story that deals with choices and this a drama that requires patience.

Love Next Door skillfully balances deep emotional wounds and the slow healing that comes with time and love. There’s also a beautiful exploration of friendship and how the relationships we hold dear from childhood can influence our adult lives. The family dynamics, career struggles, and personal growth all intertwine as Seokryu and Seunghyo navigate their shared history and rekindle their romance. It’s about letting go of the past while forging a new path forward.
CHARACTERS
BAE SEOK RYU (The Quiet Storm) ⭐❤︎
Bae SeokRyu is a complex character whose perspective and actions can be misinterpreted. I found Seokryu’s character relatable in terms of family expectations, being the first child and a woman in society. I love Seokryu’s journey in this drama, even when she made mistakes by not telling her family about her illness. I understood her because she feared pity and judgment, especially due to her upbringing.
There are so many things I loved about SeokRyu. For example, her cooking skills are thanks to Seunghyo’s ex-girlfriend who helped her realize her true career passion. Her love for cooking isn't just about feeding others, it's a language of its own. Every meal she prepares feels like a carefully crafted story, with ingredients chosen as thoughtfully as words. She's the kind of person who brings food into every conversation, whether she's using it to explain something or to lighten the mood. Jung Somin Portrayed Bae SeokRyu’s character ,she brought so much depth and emotion to this role even without saying a word.
Seokryu’s quiet strength and emotional depth reflect a character who is learning how to heal and open up to love again.
SEOKRYU’S GROWTH
Development through illness: Though not shown broadly in the drama, her illness made her feel reserved and vulnerable. She learns to accept help from others and confront the reality of her mortality.
Emotional growth: She learns to balance vulnerability with her desire for independence and strength in love and friendship.
CHOI SEUNGHYO (The Anchor)❤︎
First of all, I love Seunghyo’s profession as an architect, not just for his forearms, but because of my love for houses, even though the show didn’t focus on this much. This was the perfect line of work for him, instead of being a swimmer. Every time I see Seunghyo’s character on screen, the first thing I notice is how his eyes have this mellow vibe. His character is flawed but well-balanced. I liked that he had an ex, which helped him learn a thing or two about love instead of waiting endlessly for Seokryu.
I felt bad for his childhood self, being abandoned by his mother at a young age because she didn't want to live just as a mother but also as a career woman. This affected his childhood and caused him to draw conclusions before someone could explain. Nevertheless, Seunghyo is such a lover boy, sometimes quick in his requests but always reasonable. I love how he did his best to be there for Seokryu. Jung Haein Portrayed Choi Seunghyo’s character so well that his acting felt so natural , from the smallest mannerisms to the emotional high and low .
SEUNGHYO’S GROWTH
From self-centered to caring: Initially self-absorbed and distant from SeokRyu because of his feelings, he changed once he learned about her past. Though sometimes quick with his decisions, he learned to be patient.
Development in love: He tried to distance himself from Seokryu and was harsh at times, but after realizing his mistakes, he learned to support her without pitying her, accepting that love comes with challenges.
MOEUM (The Friend Who Heals)-`♡´-
A third friend in their dynamic, Moeum also finds comfort in her own romantic journey. She plays an essential role in their trio, representing the shared history and support system they provide each other. Her story is a gentle reflection of broader themes of healing and love. I love how Moeum brings their friendship together, always making time to be there for Seokryu and Seunghyo when they need her.
Seunghyo and Moeum had a funny friendship dynamic. Moeum is brave and lovely, and she's realistic about love and passionate about her job. I’m glad she made it to the South Pole, with her family, friends, and lover supporting her until her return.
CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT
I appreciated how the writer gave every character flaws. In a slice-of-life drama like this, no one was perfect. First, Seokryu is a complex and vulnerable character, and while we didn’t see much growth in how she loved, the show portrayed the different dynamics between two people in love. Seokryu’s illness made her skeptical about her decisions, using illness as a plot device that explored meaningful themes like vulnerability, resilience, and the impact of mortality on relationships.
All the characters showed growth after learning about her illness. In general, I would say there was growth in some areas, more so toward the end. There were times I felt frustrated with the characters' decisions, but I ended up understanding their perspective, even if it wasn’t always shown clearly in the drama.
I also loved Seunghyo’s parents’ growth. They had been misunderstood for years, but eventually, they resolved their conflicts and became close like newlyweds. Seokryu’s mom still had a complex arc, but there were moments when she changed her behavior. And Seokryu’s dad was always one of the best characters a father who wasn’t great career-wise but was always there for his family.
ROMANCE
Seokryu's slow process of falling in love with Seunghyo was beautifully portrayeddressing differently, making sure she looked good, cooking his favorite meals, and feeling jealous when his ex was around. Jung Haein and Jung Somin’s chemistry was undeniable. They looked so natural and comfortable on screen, making me blush, giggle, smile, and cry during the emotional scenes.
The romance between Seokryu and Seunghyo unfolds at a gentle pace, filled with nostalgia, rediscovery, and growth. Their chemistry feels authentic, and the tender moments stand out more than grand gestures. While some may think Seokryu doesn’t love Seunghyo because he shows more affection, it’s due to her vulnerability. During their relationship, Seokryu was still healing from her past and feared her illness would return, making her reluctant to let Seunghyo suffer as she had.
Moeum and Danho’s relationship was another highlight. Moeum didn’t force her feelings on him after she found out the truth about his past , rather she decided to be friends with him until he confessed.
EX STORYLINE
The EX storyline really helped explain Seokryu’s complexities in the drama. They both loved each other, but due to circumstances of Seokryu getting stomach cancer and depression, she didn't let any of her family members know of this situation. Faced with her emotional turmoil due to her condition, a pivotal moment occurred where her ex snapped at her, making her feel misunderstood. She breaks up with him, wanting to protect him from the burden of her struggles.
After spending a year focused on her healing and returning to her hometown, she acknowledges that while her ex wishes to mend their relationship, “they can fix the ring but not the relationship itself.” She realizes that returning to him would only subject him to the same pain she endured. Ultimately, her journey leads her to a deeper, more supportive love with her childhood best friend, illustrating that sometimes, personal growth requires letting go of past relationships, even when it seems unfair to those who cared for her.
FRIENDSHIP AND LOVE
Friendship and love are intricately woven into the story. Seokryu, Seunghyo, and Moeum share a bond that has survived the years and the distance. I called their group “The Chaotic Crew” before Mr. Mudflat Man came into the picture. Their friendship is the foundation that allows them to explore deeper feelings and eventually rekindle their romances.
Love in this drama isn't just romantic; it’s about the strength of friendships, the support of family, and the healing power of being understood by those who know you best. The unconditional love between the three friends is one of the show’s greatest strengths, a reminder that sometimes the most important relationships are those we’ve had since childhood.
FAMILY
Family plays a crucial role in the characters' development. Seokryu’s return to her family home forces her to confront unresolved issues from her past, shedding light on the complexities of familial relationships. The show captures the bittersweet reality of family dynamics sometimes strained, sometimes loving, but always deeply rooted in the characters’ identities. These interactions help Seokryu realize that healing isn’t just about romance; it’s also about reconciling with the past and understanding your place within your family.
I loved that Dong-in, though he felt inferior and made some mistakes in his choices, learned his lesson and changed his ways. I appreciate the writer for showing us sibling dynamics with growth. The family in Hyerung-Dong neighborhood brought warmth to my heart, made me cry, laugh, and wish to have such a happy family, even with their complexities.
I liked everything about the Lavender ladies, they brought so much smile to my face and i wished we had a backstory of their high school. All the side characters were so interesting that I didn't feel that their scenes were “Fillers”.
LIKES\LOVE
LND Titles – I like the titles from the Beginning of the drama and the End because it helps me understand the main focus of each Ep’s and impact to the story.
Childhood Friends to Lovers – I liked the transitions of the leads being childhood friends to lovers,and that they showed the Awkwardness when someone starts dating even though you have known each other for long. They both have different Love Dynamics in this drama. I also like the lead's bickering scenes in the drama. It was funny to see them being in love but the friendship vibe never left.
Peak Romance of Seung Ryu (Slow burn) . Hugs , their love for food and words of comfort when one partner feels down , Passionate Kiss (Ep 12 Consent) and some little peck scenes. I wanted more of their short montage dating scenes. It was so beautiful to watch, especially when Seunghyo hugs SeokRyu. SeungRyu’s Dating era was everything i wanted and got, i didn't feel cringe when they acted silly together rather i was giggling and squealing at how cute they are.
Great Dads- The Dads becoming best friends in the drama was a nice plot twist and I laughed anytime they hung out together.

DISLIKES
One of the key issues with Love Next Door was its marketing. While the drama itself was a deeply emotional and nuanced exploration of love, friendship, and healing, it was marketed as a romcom, which led to the wrong audience being drawn in. Many viewers were expecting a lighthearted, funny romance, but instead, they got something different . If the drama had been marketed as a melodrama or slice-of-life, the audience would have better understood the story’s deeper themes and emotional tone. Though i am glad that i understood the story of this drama.
Overall, I think there might be some dislikes I may not have mentioned because i did get what LND stands for in terms of genres so my critics would be that the writing had its flaws but no drama is perfect. I just wished I could change them here.
ENDING :
The ending of Love Next Door left viewers with mixed emotions. While the finale itself is happy and fulfilling in many ways, it doesn’t go as far as some fans would have hoped. The wedding scene, a staple in many romance dramas, is notably missing. Still, the ending isn’t about a wedding, it's a hopeful new beginning for the characters, suggesting that their story doesn’t end with a typical “happily ever after,” but with the promise of a shared future. I personally liked the ending even though I wanted more.
PERSONAL THOUGHTS❁
What I appreciate most about Love Next Door is the way it treats love as something fragile but worth fighting for. It’s a show that touches on the bittersweet reality that relationships, even those we cherish deeply, can fall apart due to misunderstandings, and that sometimes it’s in the smallest moments of healing where love truly finds its way. LND is a story that i would love to rewatch during the Winter season to feel my heart with warmth, its a story that might not be appreciated by everyone but thats okay we all have different opinions .
I realized that Complex characters are always misinterpreted or not fully understood when less perspectives are shown, especially women in Kdramas, From QOT Haein- Atypical Family- Do da Hee and Bae Seok Ryu- LND. These characters are one of my fav women complex characters. They are misunderstood due to less perspectives shown in the drama but I could see through these characters and understand them.
I would recommend this drama if you like slice of life, melo drama with romance and little comedy, sometimes it's slow paced but also fast, the drama has relatable lessons and watching everyone grow from being distant to becoming inseparable.
In Conclusion i would say “Love Next Door” was a good Slice of Life , Melodrama and Romance drama with little Comedy but if you ask me on a deeper level why i lIke “ Love Next Door “ i would say It was a breath of fresh air, a show where women’s needs and wants were valued and prioritized.A place where a woman’s dream is valid and she can take a job in the South Pole and her Brand new relationship stays Strong.A place where a hyper independent woman learns that she is loved deeply either way. A place where friendships blossom amidst the ups and downs. Where older Couples can rediscover the intense love they have for their partners and are ready to fight for themselves. A place where food is confirmed love language & food builds bridges. A place where best friends are for life ! A place where words hold value & stand as promises fulfilled . My Demon" is one of the first kdrama i enjoyed watching without getting bored, i was always excited to watch the new episodes when it aired every Friday and Saturday.
STORY: My demon is a fantasy rom com that tells the story of Guwon and Dohee, it switched from supernatural, romance,
Joseon era (which is the key foundation to Guwon and Dohee's Love story),thriller, family drama, CEOxbodyguard, and just
the right balance and mix that had me waiting impatiently for the next episode. Guwon and Dohee's love story started
as enemies to marriage contract to lovers and fighting for love to be with each other. Though their fate was cruel to them,
they always found a way to overcome every trials they faced. The past live of Yisun and Wolsim was beautiful yet tragic. I
do have a lot more to say about this drama but i will keep my review short.
CAST: Song Kang: He played the role of Guwon, i liked the fact that he didn't remain stoic and cold and aloof the entire time,
rather he displayed silliness, malewife role , and his comedic side is so funny.
Kim Yoojung: I could feel the depth of her character Dohee just by watching her, she portrayed the role of a
CEO, a cute wife and a strong woman who is outstanding. I could also feel the emotions through her eyes as she
embodied Dohee like a real human who went through so many pain. The pairing of Song kang and Kim Yoojung together
created an explosive magical chemistry, that word's cannot describe and i am grateful to have gotten to know them more
because of this drama. The side characters all played well as each of them portrayed the characters of humans, The
gangsters are so funny and have a good enemy to lovers bond with Guwon.
Although the story of My Demon may have its ups and downs, I was truly invested in the story of Guwon and Dohee, their love story is really captivating and touching, as they went through so many eventful times were they had to save each other again and again until they finally conquered. The emotional connection between them made me feel the love they both have for each other. Though some may not like their cute couple moments but each time i watch them i always find myself smiling so hard.
WHY I LOVE MY DEMON
Kim Yoo Jung and Song Kang have good chemistry between them, the way they interact with each other, the eye contacts, and how comfortable they are around each other. They defined chemistry in the way i could not describe because i can feel just by watching them.
OST : My Demon Ost is so good as each song has meaningful words that adds to the story and the melody is soothing to my ear, my fav ost is "With You" by winter of Aespa girl group." True" by Yoari is also good as its the intro song used in the drama and i never for once skipped the intro even though i was eager to watch the new episodes.
ACTING : Song Kang played his role as a demon and human as he did a good job portraying the character of a self -absorbed demon, playful and funny human too. He has the potential of becoming a more better actor and I hope to see him excel more when he returns from the military. I have watched some of Kim Yoojung's drama and she is indeed a good actress who can portray different characters in one play, she did so well in her thriller parts i could feel the agony, sadness, happiness, and her crying scenes here in this drama and I hope for all the best in her career.
STORYLINE: I enjoyed the storyline in this drama, the angst scenes, the past live story which was a big part of this drama which was built with historical and cultural references, making it more bittersweet and so rightfully satisfying even though some people complained about this troupe it was very useful here as it answered all my questions. The religion aspect here made me like this drama more as I could relate to most parts that talks about Christianity and was also the link to Guwon and Dohee's story. I really have so much to say about this story but I think my review is becoming too long now.
PARALLELISM: The parallelism in My Demon is my roman empire because it explains that "history repeats itself " which is true and it happens. As their fate was cruel in the past but ended in the present as they both conquered all the hardships they faced and started a new beginning.
CINEMATOGRAPHY- Aesthetically pleasing throughout each episodes .
The story of Guwon and Dohee ended happily but left audience thinking if it's truly a happy ending because Guwon still returns as a demon and Dohee as a human and i say yes it is a HAPPY ENDING because Dohee wished to have him back and their lives are linked together, when Dohee dies so will Guwon because his life is her wish. This is also implied by God that said "silly humans" meaning that both in fact will go eventually brought back for a limited time. Also the good on the hat of God is now shining so it means good ending. They will always find each other and Love each other for as long as they can.
As i end my review, I would like to say that this drama may not have satisfied everyone but i was truly satisfied even though some mistakes were made, nothing is perfect but the story of Guwon and Dohee is Perfect and memorable, leaving me with so many quotes to remember.
