Sweet and down to earth
Contrived plot aside, the actors are terribly cute and there's a sweet earnestness to this as to so many low budget shorts. It's never going to rake in sponsor money, but I'll be happy to donate to Wayufilm for more GL short films. The plot is thin as tissue paper and the ending is very "and then everyone cheered" unrealistic, and main character Didi starts out incredibly dramatic and over the top, but all in all it's very charming.
The production team has squeezed all the juice from the budget too, even the sound is good. It was well worth 38 minutes of my time.

Old anime gem
https://youtu.be/83ouV1xF648?si=vdzBXFDc0YPjNRquVery clever little film, with zero plot (plot wasn't much of a thing in 1926) but the animation is remarkably well done. I assume the person giving it a 5 doesn't really know what they were watching, because you'll need some lay insight in film technique and history to understand how making this was an impressive feat. If you're interested in the beginning of anime, it's a delightful watch.
I deduct a point since I rarely score something a full 10, story gets a 5 because it doesn't exist and music gets a 5 because it's silent.

Playboy and the Gang of Cherry

If you don't have an interest in pink films, this probably isn't for you
Gun Attaphan fans will be better off rewatching Not Me.However, if the first Thai pink film is what caught your interest, you're in for gorgeous cinematography, haunting acting and a great soundtrack. It's the last day of The Gang of Cherry as it's unravelling after a deal gone to shit, and no, the story does not always make sense. It's a stunning and mesmerising film nonetheless. Sometimes the acting is a bit stilted, and I'm docking some points for the story as I'm left with what feels holey and jarring rather than understated a fair bit of the time, and I actually have a great deal of patience with arthouse imprenetability... But the production is terrific and the film overall captivating. It slots neatly into the pink film tradition.

If you're looking for a nice Gun Attaphan treat, this isn't it
But if you're looking for a beautiful arthouse film about the intermingling of sweetness and bitterness in life, you just might have found a good one. It's definitely not for everyone, it's definitely for me. 9/10. The cinematography is gorgeous and the layers of the story unfold in a way that mesmerised me, but I dock a couple of points because bittersweet cake and other foods have honestly been used better as metaphors in other films. Still, it works fine, the acting is great and the soundtrack adds to the storytelling. There's a decline that seems a bit rushed, but overall the pacing has a languid yet tight and slightly claustrophobic feeling that really appeals to me.Vond je deze recentie nuttig?
Sweet amateur production
Rebel Heart sort of falls between two chairs: well made but too long and too plot packed for a student film, not tightly paced enough and not all that technically good for a professional production,. Conflicts get resolved very easily or just go away, after some initial quite good minutes or film. Still, it has the charm of a production made because someone really wanted to, and I'd like to see the father's background explored more - with some more experience and a bit better budget for the filmmaker. This wasn't a waste of half an hour.Vond je deze recentie nuttig?
