What I LIKE to watch: Anything interesting. But roughly, I watch Korean, Japanese and Chinese dramas for their unique characteristics and strengths. In Korean Dramas, I enjoy romance, comedy, action and family themed dramas. In Japanese Dramas, I like slice-of-life stories, relationships (parent-children, husband-wife etc.), and other adult-themed (societal problems, affairs, LGBTQ etc.) dramas. In Chinese dramas, I like xianxia & wuxia (Sci-fi & fantasy) , friendships (bro/sismances), and philosophy-of-life themed dramas.
This is just a general idea, based on my experiences and preferences. It doesn't mean that I stereo-type them as such. If a find a drama to be good, I will try to watch it, irrespective of the country of origin.
I try to watch dramas in their own terms, and try to appreciate the effort the production team has put together, even when the story-line or the direction doesn't fancy me. I am perfectly fine with dramas being slow or have a few plot holes, as long as the drama entertains me.
What I prefer to AVOID: Romance between couples with large age-gaps, Toxic/Abusive relationship stories, High-school dramas, Horror themes (ghost, vampires etc.), and extremely sad stories.
Favorite Drama: Going My Home. "Going my Home" is a Japanese drama, written and directed by Hirokazu Koreeda. He is an award-winning (Jury award in Cannes Festival) movie director, and this is the one of the only three dramas he wrote. It is a slice-of-life drama, where the protagonist is a dad who is stuck between conflicting demands of his family and his work. The Japanese description says the protagonist being "板挟み ", which literally translates to "sandwiched/trapped between planks". There is no romance or action or plot twist, but there are references to fantasy elements in the drama. It is very personal to me because I relate to the protagonist as a father and a husband. It is a very slow and mature drama, and I do NOT recommend to anyone below 30 years old.
Rating Rubric:
10: A rating of 10 is reserved for very special dramas. For me, as of now, there are only three dramas: "Going my Home" and "Mr. Queen". I like "Going My Home" for personal reasons. Watching "Mr. Queen" was such an unique and incredible experience for me. It is a perfect combination of fantasy and comedy with great cast. "Moving" is the ultimate product of entertainment in the "Superhero" genre.
9.0-9.5 : Excellent drama, that I would love to see again.
8.0-8.5: Good drama, that has a couple of flaws. Likely, won't watch again.
7.5 : Okay drama. I didn't like some of the episodes.
7.0: Good production quality, cast, but it didn't fancy me. I can see why other people like it, but not for me.
6.5 and below: I don't give rating of 6.5 and below, unless I am extremely disappointed. In most cases, I will drop a drama if I see my rating goes below 7.0. I do not rate dramas if don't watch them till the end.
