pacing took a bit of a hit in this episode but left no more than a small ding in the overall awesomeness that is W.
we're starting to see Kang Chul's personality. he is confident without being cocky and keeps a cool head in stressful situations. i like watching him become a person and not just another stock photo CEO type.
our leading lady is still amazing.
five more days???? i don't think i can make it.

i usually find the special effects in most Asian tv shows to be cheesy. here they are really well done and used sparingly so it's a nice visual surprise when it happens. The drama also has an overall sleek look and there are scenes where you can tell a lot of attention was paid to the atheistic. Everything from angles to lighting was considered to paint a whole picture with the camera not just shoot a scene. this is unusual for a korean tv drama.
Kang Chul finally gets his screen time and though the character isn't anything to write home about Lee Jong Suk is predictably making him likable by oozing his man-boy charm all over the place. Squeals ensue. it's fantastic.
and who is Oh Yeon Joo??? i don't think I've ever seen her before but she is awesome.

Oh Yeon Joo is immediately likable and, at the moment at least, free from many of the cliched drama tropes that might illicit eye rolls. this is becoming somehting of a trend in dramas lately and i am lovin' it.
Kang Chul feels very standard issue leading man; revenge drama edition. but he didn't get much screen time so here's hoping the character fills out in a less predictable manner. Even if he doesn't Lee Jong Suk brings a levity and likability to his roles that i'm sure will lend the character some color.

instead the writers steer into the skid and come out the other side with innumerable interesting possibilities to get us from here to there and i for one am stoked to see where this goes now that they have chucked expectation.
i was a little disappointed that out leads spent so much time apart this week but it allowed for interesting developments between them and other characters and gave the drama room lay all those wonderful possibilities i was talking about earlier at our feet. if the previews are to be believed they'll make up for it next week.
now i will sit in dramaland limbo until next Wednesday.

this version draws you in with it's much faster pace. this AN Jell seems friendlier and more approachable, even Ren who is prickly, but starts to let his humanity show much sooner.
it is close enough to the korean version to be familliar to fans but different enough to make you wonder and guess. this first episodes will have both fans of the original and those who have never seen it coming back, for one more episodes at least.

*the pacing continues to be spot on.
* The humor and the seriousness are handled such that both feel appropriate and cohesive
*the story appears, thus far to be well thought out. this thing is going somewhere and the writer knew where that was before the show started airing. lets keep it that way, netizens be damned.
Kang Chul is still a pretty card board cut out interchangeable {insert Dae pyo nim character here} but there's a good chance that's only because Oh Yeon Joo's reality is still getting the majority of the screen time. as she spends more time in the world of W Kang Chul's personality will have time to evolve beyond adjectives like cocky and suave and into a real person.
Oh Yeon Joo has been a real go getter thus far and i'm loving that too.
please please please don't screw this up.

The female lead...time will tell but that hair makes her look so OLD!

Yuki and Shu are just sort of there this episode. i dont find either of them to be very entertaining or intriguing. Shu's a little stiff and Yuki's not a comedian. he's supposed to be funny but he has no feel for it so he's just saying things. hopefully it just takes them a little bit to get warmed up.
i much perfer Ren to Taekyung and Mio, though a little clumsy sometimes isnt the one woman force of catastrophe that Mi Nam was. it's as if Taekyung and Mi Nam's rough edges were smoothed out. they are very entertaining to watch.

Lee Jong Suk finally gets a chance to bust out his mack daddy acting skills and uses them to transform Kang Chul from just another male lead into an interesting, dynamic and evolving character. This was the Kang Chul i was hoping we'd get to see.
not disappointed.

dont let the low rating fool you, many asian dramas come out of the gate limping. this seems to be esp. true for manadarin language dramas, you just have to give them a chance to walk it off.
despite not liking ep. 1 i will def give 2 a shot, b/c i've liked pretty much everything i've seen Chiu Roy in. oh! one more hting, dont be put off by the whole 40 episodes things. there's listed as 45 minutes, but when you take into account long credits it's not even that long.

the chemistry is real. if Lee Jong Suk and Han Hyo Joo don't get married and have babies together i'm going to be very upset.
really looking forward to ep 8.

the longer this goes on the less emotion there is in Shu's performance. at first his eyes seemed to ooze emotion but some where along the line it all faded out. my heart bled for ShinWoo when he was rejected. Shu, well i just want to politely ask him if he can go stand and look constipated off camera.

To the Beautiful You Episode 1

oh how i tire of this female lead. i say "this female lead" b/c she's appeared in dozens of k-dramas just with a different name. she is artless, desperate and well more than a little pathetic. you just have to wonder WHERE are this kid's parents or gaurdians? even when she seems to have alot going for her (like a real talent in track and feild) it is apparently rendered inert by her complete lack of self respect. in the real world such low self esteem is usually the product of years of abuse or mental illness. and in reality there is nothing cute or endearing about it.
but this isnt the the real world, this is drama land so i give ms.pitiful and her band of obviously BLIND buddies a chance. their performacnes were lack luster, not enough to over come the icky, which is sad b/c some one dumped a BUTT LOAD of money on this thing. aside from the story and the acting everything else is done beautifully.
i will probably give it at least 2 more episodes before i drop it compltely. i dont hold much hope. but hey it wouldnt be the 1st time i hated a 1st episodes and LOVED the restg of the series.
