Good Doctor Episode 13

Shi On walks into the office and is face to face with his father. Based on his expression, it’s clear he doesn’t recognize who this man is. When he father begins to yell, however, the memories of being abused as a child come rushing back and Shi On faints.


Do Han and Yoon Seo call his name, but he doesn’t regain consciousness.
 
Shi On remembers hearing his parents argue as he sits alone in a room. Suddenly his father opens the door and a blinding white light enters the room.


Shi On wakes up in a hospital bed with Yoon Seo and Do Han at his side. He assures them that he’s fine and nervously asks about where his father is. Do Han notices that Shi On’s father has caused him to be in his present state and goes out to confront the man. He finds Shi On’s father sleeping across a row of chairs in the hallway.


Do Han stops Shi On’s father from going to see his son. The father begins to argue back that it isn’t Do Han’s place to stop him from seeing his son when Shi On’s mother appears.


Shi On’s father is shocked to see his wife, and Do Han has to hold him back from hitting her. Do Han is confused about the identity of the woman and what has caused Shi On’s father to act this way (because he only knows her as a woman who works in the cafeteria).
 
Yoon Seo rushes to see what the commotion is about, and based on how she addresses the woman, Do Han seems to understand that she’s Shi On’s mother. The father is dragged off by security and yells threateningly “Did you think I wouldn’t be able to find you?”

Meanwhile Shi On hears the commotion from his hospital bed. He rips out his IV and leaves the room.


Do Han asks why Yoon Seo didn’t tell him the truth about Shi On’s mother’s identity, even if the mother asked her to keep it a secret. Do Han says Shi On will have to get used to seeing his father eventually, but Yoon Seo thinks it’ll take time for Shi On to get over the trauma.


Shi On’s parents argue outside of the hospital. His father assumes his mother has been living with Shi On this entire time. She insists that Shi On doesn’t even recognize her and asks the father to leave. She’ll do what ever it takes to make him leave, including giving him every penny to her name. He raises his hand to strike her, but he’s suddenly overcome by a coughing fit. He coughs blood into his hand. O.O
 
Yoon Seo walks through the hospital and remembers something Shi On’s mother told her off-screen. The mother has taken his father home and asks Yoon Seo to please calm Shi On down.
 
Shi On is still shaking as Yoon Seo talks to him. He tells her that seeing his father was like riding a time machine back to when he was 7. Yoon Seo asks if he remembers his mother and he says he only remembers her being hit a lot. Yoon Seo put her hand on his shoulder and he moves out of her reach. He asks to be left alone.
 
Yoon Seo tells the other residents what happened with Shi On’s parents and asks them to treat him as they usually do.


The doctors go into the conference room to discuss an upcoming surgery to correct a diaphragmic hernia. Do Han asks Shi On what sort of surgical procedure they would need to use and Shi On admits that he doesn’t know. When asked further questions, he’s unable to answer anything.


Later Yoon So asks Do Han if he thinks Shi On’s memory problem is temporary. Do Han admits that he has no idea… without his ability, Shi On definitely won’t be able to become a doctor.


Dr. Go comes into the office and asks if anyone is interested in having a get-together after work. One by one everyone comes up with excuses as to why they can’t make it. Yoon Seo is taken aback by this sudden (and first ever) invitation for an after work get-together.


Chae Kyung and Hyun Tae cross paths in the hospital. Hyun Tae says he knows Chae Kyung is the one behind the suspension of the cooperate funding for the hospital. She assumes Chairman Jeong (I’m pretty sure this is that baseball-loving “Chairman” we see occasionally) is the one who spilled the beans but Hyun Tae reminds her that he never said any names as to who his source was.
 
Chae Kyung meets with Dr. Choi and Yeo Won. If their current financial trouble continues, the hospital will have to close down. They’re not sure who exactly is behind the current funding problem (*coughChaeKyungcough*) and Chae Kyung maintains her poker face throughout the meeting.


Do Han consults another doctor about Shi On’s condition. His colleague also says there’s no guarantee that Shi On’s ability will return, and the only thing they can do to help is to make sure he feels loved and cared about.


Yoon Seo tells Dr. Choi about Shi On’s current condition and apologizes for not telling Dr. Choi earlier that she knew about Shi On’s mother. She asks Dr. Choi to please handle the situation with Shi On’s parents and in return she promises to take care of Shi On.


Do Han meets Shi On on the hospital roof. He asks Shi On if his father is the scariest thing in the world. Shi On shakes his head no and says the answer is the death of a patient. In order to save a patient from dying he must accurately diagnose and treat the patient but right now his fear of his father is hindering that.


Do Han admits that, when he first met Shi On, he saw his ability are merely a side effect of his autism. Over time, however, he grew to appreciate the benefits it had while treating patients. He reminds Shi On of the promise he made to become an even greater doctor than Do Han.
 
(Awww this is Do Han showing his love! They have almost an older brother-younger brother dynamic here. Too adorable!)
 
Jin Wook tells Nurse Jung Mi and Nurse Joo Yeon about what happened with Shi On. They both worry about hos he’s doing.
 
Yoon Seo takes care of In Hae, who asks about where Shi On is. Yoon Seo tells her that he’s just busy making rounds. She asks if Yoon Seo has a boyfriend, and she answers with a no. Yoon Seo shows In Hae pictures of Eun Ok that Gyu Hyun sent her. While scrolling through, In Hae sees the picture of the single rose and asks Yoon Seo about it.


Shi On goes to the nurse’s station and Nurse Jung Mi and Nurse Joo Yeon praise Shi On loudly so he overhears.
 
Dr. Choi remembers a time where he came to drop Shi On off at home but found his mother crying at the house.
 
Do Han tells Shi On to take a day off. Shi On refuses, but Do Han says that he’s no use in his current state.


Shi On’s father drinks alcohol while his mother sits in the corner of the room. His father then flips over the table. His mother tries to convince his father to leave with her, far away from Seoul. He says he’s going to live off of his son now but Shi On’s mother says he hasn’t done anything to deserve that. There’s a knock at the door, it’s Dr. Choi.


Shi On’s father grabs Dr. Choi by the coat and accuses him of having an affair with his wife. Dr. Choi begs the father to please leave Shi On alone, and as the father begins to shout back he starts to have another fit. He collapses onto the floor and begins spewing blood out of his mouth.


As Yoon Seo and Shi On leave work together, she tries to bring up his confession. Her tells her not to think about it, that he made a mistake. He tells her a story about how he liked a teacher when he was in elementary school and says that she’s like that teacher. He apologizes and says he did it because he’s young. She says she knows he’s lying. She felt the sincerity in his confession.


At a coffee shop, Yoon Seo asks if she’s his first love. She tells him about her first love, when she was in high school. She tells Shi On that a first love makes you grow a lot. She tells him she loves him too, as a colleague and a younger brother. She says she hopes that in the future they can love each other like real siblings. He asks her, “What about if time passes and I still feel the same?” He thinks it’ll be frustrating to love her one-sidedly


Dr. Go sits at a tent-bar (I can’t think of a good word for it in English, sorry ><) and he’s surprised when Shi On appears. Dr. Go has already had a lot to drink, so he just tells Shi On to leave. He calls Shi On back and asks if he’d like to drink together. A talkative Dr. Go admits that he only got his position as Chief because of his brother-in-law. In his opinion, that’s the reason why the rest of the pediatrics department doesn’t respect him. This fact is something that upsets him deeply, and he begins speaking so animatedly that he spits food on Shi On’s face. Shi On insists that he respects Dr. Go, but Dr. Go says he doesn’t need respect from someone like Shi On. Shi On tries to get a taxi to send Dr. Go home, but the latter is too drunk to tell him the address.


Yoon Seo sits in her bed remembers what Shi On asked about what happens if he never gets over her. The truth is, she also doesn’t know what to do in that situation.


Dr. Go wakes up in Shi On’s apartment (this seems to be a recurring theme… people getting drunk and sleeping there xD).


Shi On invites Dr. Go to have breakfast with him… a breakfast that consists of milk and two triangular kimbap each. Shi On is thankful that he got to drink with Dr. Go. The underlying sentiment here is that by inviting him for a drink, Dr. Go has somehow shown his approval and acceptance of Shi On.


Shi On tells Dr. Go that he thought he was really cool yesterday with his “I’m a surgeon too!” drunken monologue and even imitates him.


Do Han and Yoon Seo wash up (I’m not exactly sure if this is before or after a surgery). Do Han asks how Shi On is doing, and Yoon Seo tells him there really hasn’t been any change. She knows he’s already dealing with a lot of things because of his father and she doesn’t want to be an added form of stress for him. She doesn’t tell Do Han anything about what happened between her and Shi On, but he can tell by looking at her that something is wrong.


Do Han questions Shi On again, and this time he also gets everything wrong. Do Han tells Shi On to leave the room and thinks back to all of the times where Shi On’s knowledge has “saved the day” (so to speak) in the operating room.


In Hae finds Shi On sulking alone. She lets it slip that she knows his crush is Yoon Seo and when he asks how she found out, and she tells him about the rose photo. He tells her she mustn’t let it slip to anyone else. In Hae advises him to show Yoon Seo his sincerity… because it’s the only thing he’s got.
 
Dr. Choi comes and asks Shi On to follow him. When Shi On sees his father asleep in the hospital bed, his initial reaction is to run away. Dr. Choi reveals that Shi On’s father has terminal laryngeal cancer. He asks Shi On to face his father once again due to the fact that he’s dying.


Shi On treats a girl in the ER. She fell on asphalt and got glass in her arm while trying to protect her blind father from falling. After the treatment Shi On sees the girl going to pay the hospital bill alone. Shi On learns that the girl takes care of her father after she gets out of school. Although she was once embarrassed of her father’s disability, she doesn’t feel that way anymore.


Jin Wook stands outside of the club that In Young works at,waiting for her to leave. She isn’t glad to see him, but he promises to be brief. He asks her to please quit her job and consider of In Hae would feel if she found out. He says if it’s necessary, he’ll lend her money and she can pay him back in 20 years if need be. She sees this as him just flaunting the fact that he has money. She insists that she isn’t someone who suits Jin Wook and that he should find someone else.


Jin Wook and Shi On lay awake in the hospital bunk beds. Jin Wook asks Shi On if he’s ever been in love and Shi On guesses correctly that Shi On is in love with In Young. Shi On says that Jin Wook has the qualifications to love someone but Jin Wook insists that no one is qualified to love. If you love someone without conditions (i.e. even if they have nothing to give you and you have nothing to gain from them) that makes you qualified to care for them. Shi On asks if Jin Wook confessed, of course the answer is no. The fact that Shi On has confessed to the woman he loves impresses Jin Wook.


Yeo Won meets with Dr. Choi, Hyun Tae, and Chairman Jeong. Yeo Won and Dr. Choi seem shocked to see Chairman Jeong (but it’s also clear that they’ve all known each other for a while).


Shi On walks past his father’s hospital room and sees him fighting with a nurse and refusing to take medicine. He crouches outside of the room so his father can’t see him.
 
On the news there’s a report of a school bus flipping over. The Emergency Room becomes busy with injured children. The pediatrics team rushes to check all of the patients and determine who needs surgery. 9 of the children need emergency surgery, but they only have the manpower for more than 8 surgeries, meaning one child will need to be transferred. Do Han decides to let Jin Wook lead a surgery to compensate for this. Everyone is preparing to enter the operating room when suddenly an ER doctor runs in and announces that another patient was sent to them. Yoon Seo sends Shi On out to check on the new patient.
 
He rushes to the ER and finds that the patient is the same girl from earlier (Yoon Jeong), the one with the blind father. Her parents come in moments later. She has a fractured rib that has punctured her spleen and the bleeding is severe. She needs to have surgery immediately. Shi On asks to have Yoon Jeong moved to the operating room next door to the one Do Han is in, and thinks hopefully he will be able to perform the two surgeries at the same time.


Do Han, Yoon Seo, Jin Wook, and Dr. Go are all shown performing their respective surgeries. When Shi On tells Do Han that he was hoping Do Han would be able to perform the two surgeries at once, Do Han’s immediate reaction is anger. However he can’t turn away a patient in such a life or death situation, so he agrees to do both surgeries.


Shi On prepares the anesthesia for Yoon Jeong, but just when she’s prepared for surgery the patient who Do Han is operating on begins bleeding. The patient’s vitals drop and Shi On begins to worry about whether or not Do Han will be able to perform the surgery on her. Yoon Jeong’s blood pressure drops… they can’t wait any longer. Do Han says to Shi On, “You be the operating surgeon.”
