Good Doctor Episode 5

Our patient flatlines just as Do Han enters the operating room. Yoon Seo desperately performs CPR and uses the defibrillator—but it’s already too late. Shi On collapses onto the floor of the operating room. Do Han tells the other surgeons to leave the room, with Yoon Seo still trying to revive the patient and Shi On still sitting in the corner. When Do Han leaves the room too, even Yoon Seo knows there’s nothing she can do. She orders Shi On to suture and move the body.


Yoon Seo goes to deliver the bad news to the parents. They blame her for their daughter’s death, the mother grabs Yoon Seo and the father threatens to sue them for malpractice. Do Han comes out and defends Yoon Seo, saying they did everything they could, but by the time Min Hee came to their hospital, it was already too late.


Shi On sutures Min Hee’s corpse,but he’s having trouble doing it since his hands are shaking. Jin Wook comes in and offers to finish for him. Shi On holds onto the shirt Min Hee wore into the operating room and Yoon Seo fills out the death certificate.
 
Do Han is being scolded by Dr. Go,who says they should’ve just transferred Min Hee to a different hospital. Do Han tells him that would only be asking for the patient to die on the road between hospitals but Dr. Go insists that's better than being sued for malpractice. Do Han accuses Dr. Go of dumping such a risky surgery on a fellow, but Dr. Go retorts that he never approved of that surgery.


Do Han walks into the locker room to find Shi On sewing Min Hee’s shirt, because if Min Hee wears a ripped in heaven it would be embarrassing. Do Han tells Shi On that there’s no heaven—just living and dying. He tells Shi On that he doesn’t see him as a doctor. Losing a family member is a lifelong scar for those who survive, and nothing can get rid of that scar. Shi On insists that there is a heaven.


Do Han leaves the room and Shi On thinks to himself, “I know very well the fact that people think I’m ridiculous. When I was young… and now too. So it’s okay.”


Min Hee’s parents mourn over their daughter’s body and Shi On stands outside of the room even after they leave.


The other residents blame Shi Onfor Min Hee’s death and causing this suffering for Yoon Seo. Jin Wook stands up for Shi On, and says that even if Do Han were to have done the surgery, the outcome would have been the same. Yoon Seo comes in and sends the residents out of the office.


Do Han asks Dr. Choi to revoke his suspension and postpone his punishment to a more suitable time, since Pediatrics needs him. Dr. Choi asks how Min Hee’s family is doing and also worries about how Yoon Seo will react to losing a patient under her care.


Chae Kyung calls Do Han, and she’s pretty miffed that he’s blowing her off again for hospital work. According to her, since Yoon Seo was the operating surgeon she should be dealing with the aftermath alone. Do Han says he has to do this because of Yoon Seo’s current emotional state.


Jin Wook and the other residents try to get Shi On to leave from his seat outside of the room where Min Hee’s body is. They try to get him to eat, but he won’t leave. The residents receive an urgent call because of a case of appendicitis and leave Shi On still sitting there.
 
The nurses remark on how Yoon Seo seems totally unaffected when her first surgery ended so badly. Chief Nurse Joo Yeon scolds them, saying a person's heart isn’t the same as their skin so it’s impossible to understand the emotional trauma Yoon Seo is going through right now.

Jin Wook chose not to tell Yoon Seo when they received the emergency appendicitis call because he wanted Yoo Seo to rest. Meanwhile Yoon Seo goes to where Min Hee’s body is and finds Shi On still sitting outside of the room. She tells him to leave, but he tells her that when his brother and his rabbit went to heaven he stayed by them the entire time. He doesn’t want Min Hee to be alone. Yoon Seo tells Shi On that she doesn’t like his childish nature, and he asks her whether she too doesn’t believe in heaven. She says she doesn’t, for a child living (and receiving love from their parents, playing with their friends) is heaven. Yoon Seo feels like they took that away from Min Hee.


Shi On disagrees, and says Min Hee would be thankful to Yoon Seo because she was the first person who took the risk to perform the surgery. He tells her that Dr. Choi once told him: “Treating a patient is important, but giving a patient the opportunity to live is important too.”


Yoon Seo cries as she tells Shi On that had they only come an hour earlier, she would have been able to save Min Hee. Now every time she holds a scalpel, she’ll think of Min Hee. Seeing Yoon Seo becoming so emotional, Shi On reaches out his hand to comfort her. But when her phone suddenly rings, he loses the courage and puts his hands back into his lap.


The call was for Yoon Seo to report to the operating room for the removal of the patient’s appendix. Do Han tells Yoon Seo to do the surgery because he’s technically still suspended, so he’ll just observe.

Yoon Seo sees through his plan to help her regain her confidence as a surgeon, and tells him she doesn’t enjoy his one-dimensional training technique. In the end she agrees to do the surgery


The other inters are surprised when Yoon Seo enters the operating room. Before beginning the surgery she glares up at Do Han, who’s watching from the office on the second floor.


Shi On is still sitting outside of the morgue, something that Dr. Go tells Assistant Chief Hyun Tae. Dr. Go has been organizing a petition to have Shi On and Dr. Choi removed from their positions, and several parents have already signed.


Chief Director Yeo Won visits Dr.Choi to tell him about the petition that has already been submitted to the hospital’s Foundation Committee.


Meanwhile Do Han scolds Yoon Seo via microphone for taking so long with the surgery. She completes the surgery and glares at Do Han again.


Later Jin Wook and Yoon Seo are eating in cafeteria, and Jin Wook notices Yoon Seo’s hands are shaking. She asks him if Shi On is still sitting outside of the morgue, to which Jin Wook responds that he thinks so. Before returning to work she asks for a favor from one of the women that works in the cafeteria. The woman turns around and ends up being none other than Shi On’s mother.


Shi On’s mother carries a tray of food to bring to the doctor sitting outside of the morgue, she stops dead in her tracks when she sees her son and her hands tremble severely. She turns and leaves before Shi On sees her.


Min Hee’s parents come to take her body, and Shi On give them the shirt that he repaired.


Shi On’s mother stops in the stairwell, safely hidden out of sight. She remembers Yoon Seo telling her that Shi On hasn’t eaten all day, so she decides to bring him the food anyway, this time with a mask on her face. When she returns to the morgue, however, Shi On has already left.


Do Han finds Yoon Seo filling an envelope with money to bring to Min Hee’s funeral. Do Han tells her not to go to the funeral but she insists on going. He threatens her and says that if she goes to that funeral he won’t let her in the operating room for two months.


At just that moment Chae Kyung walks in and tells Yoon Seo that she should rest. When Chae Kyung and Do Han talk in private, she tells him that Yoon Seo has gotten prettier since the last time she saw her. She says she’s jealous of Yoon Seo, since Do Han has never gotten angry with her or raised his voice at her. Do Han says that’s because Chae Kyung never does anything that makes him mad. Chae Kyung insists that she does… and maybe the reason he doesn’t get mad is because he doesn’t have any interest in her. She says that getting angry or upset is just another expressions of affection or interest in a person. She tells him to be more indifferent in how he treats Yoon Seo in the future because Yoon Seo might make it a habit of relying on Do Han.



Na In Hye tells Shi On about a time when she experienced something similar to heaven. Once, nearly dying in the emergency room, all of her pain suddenly went away and she saw a white light and nearly saw the wings of an angel. “But it turns out,” she finishes, “it was the medicine. They must have given me really strong pain killers.” She says Santa Claus and heaven are the same thing, things that aren't real.


Their conversation is overheard by Yae Eun, who gets upset by the notion and runs off.


Yoon Seo goes to the funeral, but sees Do Han is already there talking with Min Hee’s parents. Her parents ask Do Han to send their apologies to Yoon Seo—they know she did everything in her power and is hurting as much as they are. They also ask him to thank Shi On, who never left Min Hee’s side. After hearing that Yoon Seo quietly leaves her envelope and walks out without being seen by either Do Han or Min Hee’s parents.


Back at the hospital, Yoon Seo sees Shi On’s mother lurking outside of the office holding food and wearing a medical mask on her face. She asks what the woman is doing there, and Shi On’s mother removes her mask. Shi On’s mother explains that she couldn’t deliver the food earlier like Yoon Seo wanted and that she felt so sorry about that she decided to bring him food. Yoon Seo asks how Shi On’s mother know they were in the pediatrics department, and the latter hurries off before answering her question. Before leaving though, Shi On’s mother tells Yoon Seo that she seems like a warm-hearted and caring person.


Yoon Seo gives the food to Shi On,who is surprised to find that it’s potato-ball soup, something he would eat in his hometown. He’s a little confused since it isn’t on the dining hall menu, and Yoon Seo tells him that the woman must’ve made it herself especially for him. His face is awestruck when he tastes it. It’s delicious, and tastes exactly like what he would eat in his hometown. He offers some to Yoon Seo, but she tells him to eat it all. Yoon Seo relays Min Hee’s parent’s message to Shi On. She asks him if he’ll do the same in the future, and he says yes even if it means getting yelled at by her and Do Han.
 
The Assistant Chief eats with the man he calls Chairman (the one we previously saw at the baseball stadium in episode 4). Chairman has heard about the petition and asks the Assistant Chief whether or not he thinks Shi On has potential. The Assistant Chief believe in Shi On’s ability, and says he’ll take care of the petition. Chairman tells him not to bother, something good is going to happen within the next few days, and after that the petition won’t be a problem anymore.


Senior Nurse Jung Mi says hello to Yae Eun as she walks by, but the look on her face makes it clear that something is wrong.


She cries when she tells that when she was a year old her father gave her part of his liver but ended up dying of liver cancer later.  She tells them that if In Hye is right and there isn’t a heaven, then where did her dad go? Jung Mi insists there is a heaven, but Yae Eun isn’t easily convinced. Shi On asks Yae Eun if she remembers her father. When she tells him yes, he says that in her heart there’s a door that can take her father to heaven but it only works if she doesn’t cry and believes in heaven.


Shi On goes to Min Hee’s funeral and asks her to take care of his brother and bunny.


Later at home, Shi On draws a mural on the wall of his apartment. Do Han gets home and sees the photo of him, Yoon Seo, Jin Wook, and company all drinking together. Yoon Seo sits at home and remembers what Shi On told her about giving patients the opportunity to live. She receives a phone call and isn’t too excited to hear from Do Han. He tells her to some outside because he’s in front of her house.


He asks her if she has  aproblem with him, and she tells him no—she has a problem with herself. She tells him she refuses to take part in a “surgery factory” and that she does this to give children the opportunity to live. Do Han warns her that idealistic doctors crumble under the pressure. She tells him she won’t crumble because she will never lose her idealism. Do Han says she has a reckless sense of duty like Shi On, but Yoon Seo tells him that Shi On isn’t a robot. She asks Do Han to help Shi On stay, but Do Han says that’s not within his power.


While walking home she sees Shi On sitting on his veranda. He tells her that even though he counted up to 1,785 dragonflies, he can’t fall asleep. She asks if she can come inside and sees the mural he’s drawn of Min Hee, his brother, and his bunny at heaven’s door. He tries to explain the door to heaven in his heart, but Yoon Seo says she already understands.


He gives her the thumbs up and says, “As I expected, you are smart, Doctor.”


She hugs him and thanks him from preventing her from becoming an emotionless surgeon, and he merely hiccups in response.
 
Outside Shi On and Yoon Seo eat kimbap, and Yoon Seo asks how Shi On’s brother died. He tells her about the mine accident and how he was the only survivor. To this day he still thinks his brother died because of him. He takes out his green scalpel and tells Yoon Seo how he got it—it was part of a doctor’s play set that he received as a birthday gift from his brother. That was when he promised his brother he would become a doctor no matter what.



The next day Yoon Seo lets herself into Shi On’s house. He’s still sleeping, even after she comes in. She spanks his butt and he sits up, only half-awake.


When he suddenly becomes aware of her presence, he tries to cover himself up with his blanket. She tells him not to bother because she’s already seen it all. He looks at the clock and says he needs to get ready for work, but she reminds him that it’s Sunday.


Since he hasn’t gone on an outing since he’s been in Seoul, she asks him what he would like to do.


Shi On decides to go to the zoo. She runs around excitedly to all of the exhibits wearing bear ears and even scares some children by imitating a bear. He makes several rounds around the zoo and Yoon Seo asks him why he likes animals so much.




He tells her that animals are like children and children are like animals, they’re all nice and cute and play well together. They notice that one of the monkeys is lethargic and isn’t eating, and Shi On runs off.


It turns out that he was going to a zookeeper to report that the monkey was sick. Thanks to Shi On, the monkey was able to be treated before its condition became too serious. The zookeeper assumes that Shi On and Yoon Seo are veterinarians and is surprised to hear that they’re pediatric surgeons.


While eating cotton candy, Shi On tells Yoon Seo that as an intern he couldn’t witness pediatric surgeries so instead he would watch the surgeries at the local animal hospital. Yoon Seo asks him if he’d rather be a veterinarian and not a pediatric surgeon. He says he does, but he can’t because both are stupid… since animals are stupid their doctors need to be smart, but that isn’t the case for Shi On.


In a meeting with Chae Kyung and Assistant Chief Chief Hyun Tae, Director Yeo Won wants to continue financially supporting the pediatric department. Chae Jyung and Hyun Tae are opposed on the basis that the department doesn’t make enough profit. At that moment their meeting is interrupted when Yeo Won receives a letter saying that Woomyung Group will no longer support the hospital.


This is the “something good” that the Chairman was talking about. Dr. Choi is seen reading the same letter.



Yoon Seo rushes to find one of the residents bleeding as the others try to explain something about a 10-year-old patient. When Yoon Seo hears growling from inside of the room she asks if there is a puppy in the room. Rather than a puppy, the room is being occupied by what appears to be a feral child. (On a side note… I’ve used this term even though it’s one that I personally don’t approve of. Reports of “feral” or “wild” children are sensationalized by media outlets. There is no reliable source that proves a child has ever been “raised by animals”. In my opinion to even suggest a child is animal-like is degrading and mitigates what they really are… Children who have been severely neglected and/or abused by their parents. I’m sorry to rant, I'll continue on with the recap...)


The girl has matted hair, is covered in dirt and her wrists are severely bruised. When Yoon Seo tries to get closer, the girl throws something at her. Shi On enters and inches closer to the girl with his hand stretched out, the girl eyes him and eventually bites him when he gets too close to her. The other interns pull him back away from the girl.
